India's poor air quality could worsen the country's fight against Covid-19.&nbsp;

As the air quality over parts of North India including New Delhi continues to deteriorate, scientists have warned that long-term exposure to air pollution could increase the risk of lung diseases and thus hinder the fight against Covid-19.
A study conducted by researchers from Harvard University showed that an&nbsp;increase of even 1 microgram per cubic meter in PM 2.5 is associated with an 8 per cent increase in the Covid-19 death rate.
Although the link between coronavirus&nbsp;and air pollution is yet to be confirmed, scientists warn of a Covid-19 burden in the coming winter months.&nbsp;

India's coronavirus count has crossed 78 lakh with a jump of 53,370 cases in the last 24 hours, according to government data. 650 deaths in the last 24 hours have pushed the total death count to 1,17,956. Meanwhile, 70,16,046 people in the country have recovered since the beginning of the pandemic. The country has been reporting a steady decline in its daily coronavirus infections after reaching a peak of about 90,000 cases a day in September. Maharashtra, India's worst COVID-19-affected state added 7,347 new cases, while Delhi on Friday reported over 4,000 coronavirus cases in a day, sparking concerns of a virus wave amid the festive season.

The committee, headed by Professor M Vidyasagar of IIT Hyderabad, has used computer models to map the trajectory of the epidemic in the country. Its key finding has been that the disease is likely to have peaked in the middle of September, and the total number of infections in India is unlikely to exceed 10.6 million. So far, 75 lakh people in India have been infected, of which nearly 66 lakh have recovered.&nbsp;The committee claimed that the lockdown imposed in March has had a powerful impact on slowing down the spread of the disease in the country. In the absence of the lockdown, the death count would have gone up to 25 lakh, it said. As of now, 1.14 lakh people have died in India because of the disease.
