An MP from the Samajwadi Party demanded that India's Constitution should be kept next in place of the golden sceptre, which he described as an "anachronistic symbol of monarchy."&nbsp;
SP MP RK Chaudhary shot off a letter to Speaker Om Birla seeking to replace the 5-feet long sceptre.&nbsp;
"The Constitution is the symbol of democracy. In its previous tenure, the BJP govt under the leadership of PM Modi installed 'Sengol' in Parliament. 'Sengol' means 'Raj-Dand'. It also means 'Raja ka Danda'. After ending the princely order, the country became independent. Will the country be run by 'Raja ka danda' or the Constitution? I demand that Sengol be removed from Parliament to save the Constitution."
The demand was also backed by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.
&ldquo;When Sengol was installed, the Prime Minister had bowed to it. But he forgot to bow while taking the oath this time. I think our MP wanted to remind the Prime Minister about it.&rdquo;
The BJP sharply hit back at Chaudhary, saying that the opposition parties are bent on insulting the Indian culture.&nbsp;
"The Samajwadi Party has opposed Sengol in Parliament. It says that it is 'Raja ka Dand', if it was 'Raja ka Dand', why did Jawaharlal Nehru accept the Sengol? This shows the mindset of the Samajwadi Party. First, they attack and abuse Ramcharitmanas, now Sengol, which is part of Indian and Tamil culture," &nbsp;BJP Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla told ANI news agency.&nbsp;
"Does DMK support this kind of insult of Sengol, they must clarify. The question is that the mindset to reduce Sengol to a walking stick for decades has once again come in the form of Samajwadi Party. They do not respect Indian culture, they do not respect Tamil culture, and therefore they are again insulting Sengol. The DMK must take a stand on this," Poonawalla added.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday reacted sharply to the police's detention of protesting wrestlers in Delhi and targeted the Centre, saying the 'Sengol' installed in the new Parliament building was "bent" the very first day.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday reacted sharply to the police's detention of protesting wrestlers in Delhi and targeted the Centre over the issue, saying the 'Sengol' installed in the new Parliament building has "bent" the very first day.
Stalin's jibe at the PM Narendra Modi-led dispensation seemed to be targeted at the hype around the Sengol, as the sceptre is said to be symbolic of upright governance and the upholding of justice. It was installed in the new Parliament building on Sunday, after PM Modi inaugurated the structure in the national capital.
Stalin was reacting to the Delhi Police detaining ace wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia for violation of law and order in the capital city after they breached the security cordon while trying to move towards the new Parliament building for a planned women's 'Mahapanchayat'.
The champion wrestlers had resumed their agitation against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on April 23, demanding his arrest for the alleged sexual harassment of several women grapplers, including a minor.

"Police detaining them after dragging them is condemnable. This shows the Sengol has bent the very first day. 97-year-old Vummidi Ethiraj, member of makers of historic 'Sengol, which was installed in the Lok Sabha Chamber witnessed the splended moment. As per multiple media reports, Ethiraj witnessed the day when the sacred sceptre was handed over to then PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947 and he witnessed grand moment 75 years later on Sunday.&nbsp;

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has hit back after Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called the union government's claims regarding the history of 'Sengol' bogus. 

Amit Shah accused the Congress of hating Indian traditions and culture and asked the party to reflect on their behaviour.&nbsp;

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday accused the Congress of reducing the ceremonial sceptre Sengol, which will be installed near the chair of the speaker in the new Parliament building, to a "walking stick".
Amid the war of words between the ruling and opposition parties over the inauguration of the new Parliament building, Shah said the Congress needs to "reflect" on its behaviour as he denounced the party's claim that there was no evidence of the Sengol being a symbol of the transfer of power by the British to India in 1947.
"Why does the Congress party hate Indian traditions and culture so much? A sacred Sengol was given to Pandit Nehru by a holy Saivite Mutt from Tamil Nadu to symbolize India's freedom but it was banished to a museum as a 'walking stick'," Shah tweeted.
"Now, Congress has heaped another shameful insult. The Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam, a holy Saivite Mutt, itself spoke about the importance of the Sengol at the time of India's freedom," he said.
Congress, he further posted, is calling "Adheenam's history as BOGUS! Congress needs to reflect on their behaviour".
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday claimed there was no documented evidence of Lord Mountbatten, C Rajagopalachari and Jawaharlal Nehru describing the Sengol as a symbol of the transfer of power by the British to India.
The Sengol will be installed near the Chair of the Lok Sabha speaker after the new Parliament building is inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
The event is being boycotted by 20 Opposition parties, including the Congress.
