Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of three semiconductor facilities, worth about ₹1.25 lakh crore, including two plants in Gujarat and one in Assam.
A historic day for India: PM Modi
Addressing the event, PM hailed it as "a historic day" for India and added that the nation was "taking a strong step towards a bright future." He also said when India commits, it delivers, referring to his government's commitment to make the country a semiconductor manufacturing hub.
The 'Made in India' semiconductor chips will take the country towards self-reliance and modernity, he said.
He said the earlier governments committed scams of thousands of crores, but they could not invest thousands of crores for the development of the semiconductor industry.
India's semiconductor push &amp; Tatas Out of the three facilities, two are being set up by the Tatas in Gujarat and Assam. Speaking on this occassion Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said, "It is very important for India to become a semiconductor nation. I am very glad that Tata Group has been able to establish the first semiconductor fab (in Guajarat) and also the first indigenous assembly unit in Assam."
An ambitious manufacturing goal
N Chandrasekaran also said, "Typically a fab takes four years (to start production), our goal is to produce the chip in the calendar year 2026 - hopefully the latter part of the year. We have a very aggressive timeline."

The cabinet on Thursday approved setting up of three semiconductor plants in India with a total investment of Rs 1.26 lakh crore. As per the Minister of Electronics &amp; Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, the construction of these plants will start in the next 100 days.&nbsp;
"Today the Prime Minister has taken an important decision to set up a semicondutor fab in the country. The first commercial semiconductor fab will be set up by Tata and Powerchip-Taiwan whose plant will be in Dholera," the minister said
<h3>Tata's semiconductor factory</h3>
Tata group will set up its semiconductor chip fabrication unit in Gujarat in partnership with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp with an outlay of nearly Rs 50,000 crore. Last year, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran said that the conglomerate will announce its semiconductor chip fab "very soon," and "it will be a very big investment."
Along with the factory in Gujarat, the cabinet has also approved Tata Electronics' Plant which involves a financial outlay of Rs. 40,000 crore for assembling and packaging of semiconductors at Jagiroad in Assam. Thus fostering the first semiconductor plant in north-east. The Assam government will invest nearly Rs 21,000 crore.

As per The Economic Times, Tata Sons' anticipated capital infusion into new business areas and group priorities - semiconductors, defence, electric vehicles, and Air India, for instance - is set to exceed $120 billion in the coming years.
In tie-up with Japan's Renesas Electronics Corp and Thailand's Stars Microelectronics CG Power will also be setting up semiconductor unit in Gujarat.&nbsp;
<h3>Semi-Conductor plants</h3>
As per Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, all the plants in total will have a capacity of producing 50,000 wafers per month. One wafer has 5,000 chips so the total will be around 3 billion chips per annum.
Out of the Rs 1.26 lakh crore investment, Rs 91,000 crore will be invested in Gujarat's Dholera, Rs 27,000 crore in Assam and Rs 7,600 crore in Gujarat's Sanand.&nbsp;
The Minister further added that Chip fab scheme will employ 26,000 people directly, and nearly 1 lakh people will indirectly get jobs. These factories will be additional to the Rs 22,516 crore plant announced by US-based Micron in Sanand last year.&nbsp;
"Today, investment proposals of more than Rs 2.50 trillion have been received by the Government of India from global semiconductor majors. India is fast becoming a semiconductor nation. Just two years ago, it was not even present in the semiconductor ecosystem of the world", Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Wednesday.

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said that the ministry is evaluating 25 startups for availing semiconductor design subsidy scheme. Chandrasekhar has said that 5 startups have already received the perks of the scheme.
"In the design part of the semiconductor ecosystem, we are charging forward today with almost 30 startups. Five startups have been given direct government financial support and 25 more are being evaluated," said Chandrasekhar.

Under the scheme financial incentives and design infrastructure support are set to be extended to domestic companies, startups and MSMEs across various stages of development and deployment of semiconductor design for integrated circuits (ICs), chipsets, system on chips (SoCs), systems &amp; IP cores and semiconductor-linked design for over a period of 5 years.

Major international semiconductor companies are eyeing India given its ambitious plan to become a semiconductor hub. Quoting sources, Mint says that some of the manufacturers are likely to formally express an interest in the near future.&nbsp;
Along with additional incentives, India has pledged more than $10 billion in federal and state subsidies to encourage semiconductor production. This is likely to extend the field of competitors for these subsidies. The timeframe that was believed to have closed for eligibility will probably be opened again even though three contenders are still being evaluated.
The government's efforts to entice international semiconductor companies have been successful, according to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of communications and information technology, who returned after spending three days in Silicon Valley and meeting with more than 60 semiconductor companies.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s huge confidence about India&rsquo;s semiconductor programme. We have received interest from a number of large players. The entire ecosystem wants to come to India," Vaishnaw, who is also the railways minister, said.
The government is confident that it has the ideal mix of enabling elements, including financial incentives, top-notch talent, infrastructure investments, and supportive policies, to draw significant investments in both core chip manufacturers and the supporting units that make up the chip manufacturing industry, attracting players from all segments.
According to a Bloomberg report, the government has also decided to keep the three proposals submitted under the previous window by Vedanta-Foxconn JV, International Semiconductor Consortium (ISMC), and Singapore's IGSS Ventures, which total $10 billion in financial incentives with a 50% subsidy on investments for making semiconductors in India, open to potential applicants. December 2021 saw the announcement of the programme.
