Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq has been booked for sedition following his recent remarks allegedly defending the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan and equating it with India's own freedom struggle, police said on Wednesday.
He was charged under Indian Penal Code section 124A (sedition) following a complaint from BJP leader Rajesh Singhal on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Chakresh Mishra said.

Following registration of the case, Barq on Wednesday said he was quoted out of context and wrong charges have been levelled against him. "I am with the policies of India," he said.
Singhal in his complaint said that Barq's "controversial statement comes in the category of sedition", he said.
The MP has been also booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), Mishra said.
Besides Barq, two others -- Mohammad Muqueem and Chaudhary Faizan &ndash; have also been booked under these sections, the officer said, adding that the matter is being probed.
Following the Sambhal MP's remarks, Samajwadi Party (SP) workers Muqueem and Faizan posted material on social media in support of the Taliban, according to the FIR.
Responding to questions from reporters on Monday, Lok Sabha member Barq had said the Taliban wanted to free their country and it was Afghanistan's internal matter.
He had called the Taliban a force that did not allow Russia or the United States to establish themselves in Afghanistan, "and now they want to run their own country".
The MP had said that when India was under British Rule, the entire country fought for independence.
"They want to be free. This is their personal matter. How can we interfere?" the SP legislator had said on developments in Afghanistan.
Endorsing the Taliban takeover, Barq had said the Afghans want to run their own country in the manner they wanted." The remarks drew sharp criticism from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
In the state legislative council, the chief minister on Tuesday slammed the opposition MP.
"He was shamelessly supporting the Taliban. It means supporting their barbaric act. We are a parliamentary democracy. Where are we heading? We are supporting people who are a blot on humanity," the CM added.

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the immediate release of Manipur activist Erendro Leichombam for sedition in May for his Facebook posts. He was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) over the controversial Facebook post that said &lsquo;cow dung and cow urine&rsquo; don&rsquo;t cure Covid.
The activist, along with journalist Kishorechandra Wangkhem, were arrested for posting the comment over the death of Saikhom Tikendra Singh, the then state BJP President.
While Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought time and wanted the case to be adjourned till Tuesday, the judges ordered his release latest by 5 pm on Monday itself.

Chhattisgarh police have filed a sedition case against an IPS officer, G P Singh.
Officials said during raids at his premises by the state's Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Economic Offences Wing (EOW), documents revealing GP Singh was allegedly involved in promoting enmity and hatching a conspiracy against the government and public representatives were found.
During the raid at the official residence of Singh, an Additional Director General (ADG) rank officer, some pieces of torn papers were found from the backyard of the house. When pieces of papers were rearranged, serious and sensitive contents were found to be written and typed on it, the FIR said.
He was suspended earlier this week in a disproportionate assets case. During a three day search, officers said they discovered movable and immovable assets worth around ₹ 10 crore.

The report says that there is no clear definition of what constitutes &ldquo;hate speech&rdquo; in the IPC. The Committee for Reforms in Criminal Laws, constituted by the Home Ministry, is attempting for the first time to define such speech. The committee is expected to submit its report soon. 
Earlier this month, observing that an extreme or harsh point of view would not amount to hate speech, the Bombay High Court quashed an FIR against a Navi Mumbai resident. The court said, the right to express one&rsquo;s views is a protected and cherished right in our democracy, just because the point of view of the petitioner is extreme or harsh will not make it a hate speech.
On April 30, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a plea challenging the legal validity of Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that deals with the offence of sedition.

The court said that it was not seditious to have views different from the government. The petition had demanded that Abdullah's membership of Parliament be declared null and void and sedition charges be slapped on him under Section 124-A of IPC. The court also directed the petitioners to deposit ₹50,000 for filing the petition.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a plea seeking action against former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah for his comments on scrapping of <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/no-civilian-or-journalist-new-about-article-370-abrogation-centre-1612959246242" target="_blank" >Article 370</a>.
The court said that it was not seditious to have views different from the government.
The petition had demanded that Abdullah's membership of Parliament be declared null and void and sedition charges be slapped on him under Section 124-A of IPC.
The court also directed the petitioners to deposit ₹50,000 for filing the petition.
