In a landmark overhaul of colonial-era criminal laws, the Centre on Friday introduced in the Lok Sabha three bills to replace the IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act

The Centre has proposed to drop Section 377 from the new set of criminal laws it plans to introduce to replace the current ones.
As a result, the proposed news laws have no provision for sexual offences against men. The new bills introduced in the Lok Sabha define rape as an offence committed by a man against a woman or a child.&nbsp;
Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) says "Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine".
Interpretation of Section 377 is what led to the criminalisation of gay sex in India, however, Supreme Court watered down the law to exclude 'consensual unnatural sex' by adults. Now with govt proposing to do away with Section 377 completely, there will be no law to deal with non-consensual acts against men.&nbsp;

 The fact that homosexual relationships are decriminalised after the Navtej Singh Johar judgment cannot give rise to a claim to seek legal recognition for such relationships as a marriage, the Centre said in its affidavit.

&nbsp;The fact that homosexual relationships are decriminalised after the Navtej Singh Johar judgment cannot give rise to a claim to seek legal recognition for such relationships as a marriage, the Centre said in its affidavit.&nbsp;

The Government on Sunday filed a counter-affidavit in the Supreme Court, opposing pleas seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriages in the country.&nbsp;
In its affidavit the Centre has said that living together of persons in same-sex relationships 'cannot be compared to the Indian family concept of a husband, a wife and children born out of the union', Livelaw.in reported.&nbsp;
The Centre has further said that the union between persons of opposite sex is 'socially, culturally and legally ingrained into the very idea and concept of marriage and ought not to be disturbed or diluted by judicial interpretation'.&nbsp;
The three judge Supreme Court bench comprising of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will hear pleas seeking legal validation for same-sex marriage on March 13.
