A recent study has drawn attention to the potential negative impacts of excessive screen time on the development of toddlers. The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics, sheds light on the connection between screen time and delays in speech development and problem-solving abilities among young children.&nbsp;
Ranging from 1-3 years old, children exposed to higher amounts of screen time were more likely to experience setbacks in key developmental areas. The research highlights delays in speech acquisition and problem-solving skills as particularly noteworthy outcomes of prolonged screen exposure.
The study was done on 7,097 children and it was found that having 1-4 hours of screen time per day at age 1 is linked with a higher risk of developmental delay in problem-solving, fine motor, and in communication.&nbsp;
One of the most concerning aspects highlighted in the study is the link between excessive screen time and speech development delays. According to the research, toddlers who spent significant hours in front of screens were more prone to encountering difficulties in acquiring language skills. It is also worth noting that the study has several limitations as per experts.

A recent survey has revealed that the screen time of children have drastically increased by 52% between 2020 and 2022. The rise is mostly for children between 12-18 years.&nbsp;
With technology becoming a part and parcel of our lives, it is difficult for parents to cut down on children&rsquo;s screen time as they rely upon electronic gadgets for almost everything, way more than before. So, rather than completely cutting down on screen time, teaching children mindful utilisation of their time is important.&nbsp;
Try spending more time with kids doing activities like art, gardening or playing games, which do not include electronic gadgets. Make sure they do not watch or read something triggering or sensitive before going to bed. Reading out a happy story is rather a great idea for them to have a sound sleep.&nbsp;

Assessing the performance of kids under five, researchers found that children who indulged in excessive screen&nbsp;times of several hours were less able in comprehending what they were being told, compared to children with lower screen exposure.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Published in PLOS One, the study found that out of the 718 children studied, around 70 per cent&nbsp;had been exposed to excessive screen time.&nbsp;What&rsquo;s more, a majority of the children had been exposed to&nbsp;TV&nbsp;screens even before they turned one.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Explaining the developmental delay, researchers said generally children learn from their&nbsp;caregivers and are able to&nbsp;speak a lot of words by the age of three. But those exposed to excessive screen times are unable to do so.&nbsp;&nbsp;
When a parent&nbsp;says &lsquo;Come here and sit down,&rsquo; they are issuing two commands. But the child manages to understand just one, representing a developmental issue.&nbsp;Children exposed to screen times&nbsp;also&nbsp;imitate the slang or inappropriate words&nbsp;they pick up on television.&nbsp;

While it is now impossible to avoid screens altogether, the team urges care providers to exercise supervision during the child&rsquo;s screen exposure&nbsp;and limit it as much as possible.

New research published in The Lancet Digital Health journal has revealed a link between screen time and higher risk and severity of myopia in children and young adults.

According to a study published in The Lancet Digital Health journal, screen time could increase myopia risk in young people and children. The research comes as millions of children around the world have spent substantial time using remote learning methods following the closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study was undertaken by researchers and eye health experts from Singapore, Australia, China and the UK. The authors examined more than 3,000 studies investigating smart device exposure and myopia in children and young adults aged between 3 months and 33 years old.
After analysing and statistically combining the available studies, the authors revealed that high levels of smart device screentime is associated with around a 30 percent higher risk of myopia. And when combined with excessive computer use that risk rose to around 80 percent.
