Savita Punia-led India hockey team defeated Spain 1-0 to lift the inaugural FIH Women's Nation's Cup in Valencia to seal a berth in the 2023-24 Pro League.

Savita Punia-led Indian hockey team defeated Spain 1-0 to lift the inaugural FIH Women's Nation's Cup in Valencia to seal a berth in the 2023-24 Pro League. While it was the Spanish side that got the penalty first, Savita Punia denied them the early lead with a successful save. An aggressive Spanish side, too, kept looking for an equaliser until the final minutes of the 4th quarter but the Indian defense stood firm and maintained their lead.&nbsp; India and Spain had played the game as replacements after New Zealand and Australia pulled out due to Covid-19 issues.&nbsp; While India won the title, they haven't qualified for the ongoing 2022-23 Pro League season.&nbsp;

The 34-year-old is the third player to win back-to-back FIH Men's Goalkeeper of the Year award. 
After winning the award, the magnificent women's goalkeeper became only the third female athlete to win the Goalkeeper of the Year (women) for consecutive years since the inception of the award in 2014.

Shuttlers Lakshya Sen and Aakarshi Kashyap sailed through to the quarter-finals with comfortable wins. While Lakshya beat Ying Xiang Lin 21-9, 21-16 in the men's singles round of 16, Kashyap thrashed Eva Kattirtzi 21-2, 21-7 in women's singles.
SQUASH
The pair of Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal beat Rachael Grinham and Zac Alexander of Australia 2-0 in the Mixed Doubles quarters to advance to the semifinals.

The Indian women’s team made history on Sunday afternoon by clinching the bronze medal after defeating New Zealand in a penalty shootout.
Savita Punia’s side became the first Indian women’s team in 16 years to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games. India had last won the silver at the 2006 games in Melbourne. Even in 2018, India had come close but they lost to England in the bronze medal match.
It was Salima Tete’s goal that had given India a 1-0 lead in the second quarter. While India were all set for a victory in regulation time, a penalty stroke for the Kiwis with less than 20 seconds left on the clock threatened to derail India’s hopes.
And New Zealand did score the goal to force a penalty shootout, but the Women in Blue led by Captain Savita Punia in goal ensured they didn’t commit the same mistakes they did against Australia and ended the country's long wait for a podium finish after 16 years.
