Saudi Arabia said on Thursday it will launch a training program with the goal of sending its own astronauts, including a woman, into space next year.
The kingdom is actively promoting science and technology as part of its wide-ranging Vision 2030 plan to overhaul its economy and reduce its dependency on oil.
The plan, championed by Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also calls for greater integration of women into the workforce of the conservative Muslim country. Saudi Arabia lifted a long-standing ban on women driving in 2018.
“The Saudi Astronaut Program, which is an integral part of the Kingdom's ambitious Vision 2030, will send Saudi astronauts into space to help better serve humanity,” the Saudi Space Commission said in a statement.
“One of the astronauts will be a Saudi woman, whose mission to space will represent a historical first for the Kingdom.” The first Arab or Muslim to travel to space was Saudi Arabia's Prince Sultan bin Salman, a half-brother of the crown prince and an air force pilot who was part of the seven-member crew of NASA's Discovery mission in 1985. He later served as head of the Saudi Space Commission from 2018 until last year, when he was appointed an adviser to King Salman.
The neighbouring United Arab Emirates has the Arab world's leading space program, having launched a probe into Mars' orbit in February 2021.
The UAE plans to launch its first lunar rover in November. If the moon mission succeeds, the UAE and Japan, which is providing the lander, would join the ranks of only the US, Russia and China as nations that have put a spacecraft on the lunar surface.

Saudi woman sentenced to 45 years in prison for social media use    

The court, which normally handles political and national security cases, gave the sentence during al-Qahtani's appeal of her earlier conviction.

A Saudi court has sentenced a woman to 45 years in prison for 'damaging the country' through her social media use.
The woman, identified as Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani, hails from one of the biggest tribes in Saudi Arabia and has no apparent history of activism.&nbsp;
The court, which normally handles political and national security cases, gave the sentence during al-Qahtani's appeal of her earlier conviction.
Judges accused al-Qahtani of &ldquo;disrupting the cohesion of society&rdquo; and &ldquo;destabilising the social fabric,&rdquo; according to the charge sheet, citing her activity on social media.
An official charge sheet accessed by The Associated Press and human rights groups describes her case as involving her social media use, though Saudi officials did not respond to requests for comment.
Not long ago, a similar 34-year prison sentence was handed down to Salma al-Shehab, a Saudi doctoral student at Leeds University in England.

Neom, the brainchild of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is planning to build twin skyscrapers about 500 meters (1,640 feet) tall that stretch horizontally for dozens of miles. Saudi Arabia’s NEOM launched a regreening initiative to plant 100 million native trees, shrubs and grasses by 2030. 
NEOM was announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2017 as part of the Kingdom’s drive to diversify its oil-reliant economy.
The Crown Prince intends NEOM to be a futuristic, sustainable community joined together by The Line – a 170 kilometer stretched of car-free communities linked by public transport.
The Kingdom is currently home to the world’s fourth-tallest building: The Abraj al-Bait clock tower hotel in Mecca, which is 601 meters tall. Otherwise, the world’s current tallest man-made structure is the 828-metre-tall (2,717 ft) Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

As the Covid numbers in several countries surged, Saudi Arabia has banned travel to 16 countries for its citizens. 
Saudi citizens have been banned to travel to India and 15 other countries, including Lebanon, Syria, Somalia Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Venezuela.
The countries included in the list have seen an uptick in cases in the last few weeks. 
The country has also assured its citizens of close monitoring of Monkeypox cases. Officials say, Saudi has yet to record its first case.
