The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for his remark in which he called for the eradication of Sanatan Dharma.

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for his 'eradicate Sanatan Dharma' remark.
The court's direction comes in response to a plea seeking FIR against Stalin.
Notices have also been issued to MP A Raja, MP Thirumavalavan, MP Su Venkatesan, Tamil Nadu DGP, Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, Union Home Ministry, Minister for Hindu Religious &amp; Charitable Endowment Department PK Sekar Babu, Chairman of Tamil Nadu State Minorities Commission Peter Alphonse and others.
The DMK leader had said that 'Sanatan Dharma' is like malaria and dengue and must be eradicated.
Despite facing severe backlash from the BJP and other quarters, Stalin stood by his comment.
Earlier this week, he said the Dravida movement was initiated to abolish Sanatan Dharma.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said Sanatan Dharma is the "Rashtriya" (national) religion" of Bharat.
Against the backdrop of controversial comments on Sanatan Dharma by DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, Adityanath said it was unfortunate that some people living in India are still insulting the Sanatan Dharma which has been attacked since ancient times.
&ldquo;Sanatan Dharma is the Rashtriya dharma (national religion) of Bharat. No one can question its perpetuity,&rdquo; the UP chief minister said at the unveiling ceremony of Dhwajstambh (flagstaff) at Nath temple in Indore.
Like Sanatan Dharma which has been facing attacks since ancient times, the existence and reality of God too has been questioned.
"It is unfortunate that even today many people living in Bharat are humiliating Sanatan Dharma. They do not miss any opportunity to attack Indian values, ideals and principles," Adityanath said.
"Even Ravan had also tried to attack the reality of God but what was the result? Ravan was destroyed by his ego,&rdquo; he said.
DMK leader and Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin recently caused a storm after he claimed Sanatan Dharma is against social justice and that it should be eradicated.
Likening Sanatan Dharma to coronavirus, malaria and dengue, Udhayanidhi Stalin -- the son of Chief Minister Stalin -- said such things should not be opposed but destroyed.
A Raja, another DMK leader, likened Sanatan Dharma to diseases such as leprosy. A former minister during the UPA regime, Raja also said Udhayanidhi Stalin's remark was soft.
Adityanath said Mughal ruler Babar had tried to demolish the temple of Lord Ram in Ayodhya, but a grand temple is being constructed at Ram Janmabhoomi after 500 years.
He said "Hindu" is not a religious word but it is a cultural identity of Indians. "Unfortunately, some people have tried to bring the Hindu identity within a narrow ambit".
Amid a political debate over "Bharat vs India", the BJP leader said the country has been addressed as Bharat since ancient times and its citizens have been called "Hindus".
"When Muslims from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh go to Mecca for performing Haj, they are addressed as Hindus in Saudi Arabia," he said.
Adityanath praised British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who recently visited India to participate in the G20 summit, for proudly flaunting his Hindu identity.
&ldquo;Sunak says he is proud to be a Hindu. He has no hesitation in going to the temple, worshipping Gau Mata (cow), sitting in the presence of sants and saying Jai Shri Ram and Jai Siya Ram because his heritage is linked to the sanskara (values) and roots of the Sanatana Dharma&rdquo;, he added.

The BJP-led Centre should be targeted on "corruption" and the Sanatan Dharma debate must be avoided, DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin advised his party workers on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi telling his Cabinet colleagues days ago to defend Sanatan Dharma is a clear pointer that he is trying to derive political mileage out of the row, the Tamil Nadu's ruling party chief said in a statement.
One of the Union Ministers is trying everyday to divert people's attention by deliberately attempting to make Sanatan a talking point. "Our people should not fall prey to the trick of the BJP to hide its failures." Dravidar Kazhagam chief K Veeramani has pointed out that the BJP wants to prevent debate on corruption and hence it is diverting attention by focusing on Sanatan Dharma, the Chief Minister said. Veeramani has underscored that "we should talk more on BJP's corruption." Hence, Stalin urged his party cadres, office-bearers and leaders of alliance parties including the Congress and Left parties to keep the focus on graft.
"Let us work with dedication to win our cherished goal of protecting the country and democracy by defeating the graft-tainted, communal and despotic BJP regime and I appeal to everyone to not give room to attention diversion." People knew pretty well that those belonging to the BJP are adept in making people forget real issues and divert attention.
The Chief Minister listed alleged irregularities in Central schemes, including the Bharat Mala and Dwaraka expressway projects to the tune of Rs 7.50 lakh crore and claimed the CAG report has exposed it.
Referring to the Manipur violence, Stalin said the BJP regime is spineless to "douse fire" and it is trying to change the course of national discourse. The recent victory of INDIA alliance partners in the bypolls is a precursor, symbolising a nation-wide win for the combine in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.&nbsp;

The UP minister defended his actions and said that he had done nothing wrong.

UP Minister Satish Sharma faced flak from the opposition Monday after a video surfaced online showing him washing his hands at a shivling in the Lodheshwar Mahadev temple in Barabanki.&nbsp;
The video clip showed the Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies washing his hand in the 'argha,' or the base, of the shivling with the help of a priest.
Congress and the Samajwadi Party took exception to the act and demanded the resignation of the minister for "insulting the Sanatan dharma." Minister Sharma countered the allegations saying he did nothing wrong, if he had, the priest would have stopped him.
The priest of the temple said that as the minister's had 'prasad' in his hand, he helped him wash them in the 'argha' of the shivling and there is nothing wrong in this.
The incident happened on August 27, when Sharma visited the temple with Public Works Minister Jitin Prasad.
Sharma and district in-charge minister Jitin Prasad had gone to Hetmapur village of Ramnagar tehsil to distribute relief material to the flood victims and both of them had stopped to pray at the temple.
UP Congress President Ajay Rai said, "The minister should know what he is doing. Will we wash our hands when we offer water and pay our respects? The minister has insulted Sanatan Dharma." Congress leader Surendra Rajput said Satish Sharma had insulted the Lord Shiva with his act and must be sacked.
"Washing hands in the 'argh' of shivling is an unrighteous act. Only those who do not care about Sanatan Dharma can do this. The BJP minister has insulted Lord Shiva. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should sack him for this anti-religious act," he said.
Samajwadi Party leader and former MLC Sunil Singh Sajan said that if the leader belonged to some other caste, BJP would have expelled him by now.
"When will Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expel this 'adharmi' minister? This is the real character of BJP. First, they will ask for votes in the name of religion and then do such things," Sajan said. Satish Sharma told PTI that the opposition was unnecessarily blowing up the matter.
"I am a Sanatani Shiv bhakt. I know very well what is right and what is wrong. The opposition is unnecessarily blowing up the issue," he said.
"I did what I felt was right. It was not my intention to hurt anyone. If I was wrong, the priest would not have washed my hands." Sharma related the entire sequence of events saying the act came in between the pooja ritual.
"Nine days ago, I had gone to the Lodheshwar Mahadev Temple in Barabanki for worship &hellip; I had sandalwood and honey on my hand, over which Acharyaji made me wash my hands under the feet of Lord Shiva.

"Even in my dreams, I cannot think about disrespecting 'sanatani' faith. If my act has hurt someone, then I am sorry for it," the minister said.
Aditya Tiwari, the priest of Lodheshwar Mahadev Temple, said that the minister had done nothing wrong.
"Minister Sharma had sandalwood etc on his hands after performing the puja. When he asked to wash his hands, they were washed next to shivling. This was done because it was in the form of prasad. There is nothing wrong in this," Tiwari told PTI.
