Salman Rushdie&rsquo;s answer to violence is art as the author&rsquo;s memoir about the knife attack he faced in 2022 is now set to hit the stands on April 16, publisher Penguin Random House India announced on Thursday.
In "Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder", Rushdie recalls in "unforgettable details" the traumatic events of August 12, 2022 at the Chautauqua Institution when he was attacked by a man wearing a black mask, wielding a knife. The attack left Rushdie blind in the right eye.
The 76-year-old has recalled in the book the attack's aftermath, his journey toward physical recovery and healing.
"This was a necessary book for me to write: a way to take charge of what happened, and to answer violence with art," Rushdie said.
The 256-page book is "a deeply moving reminder of literature&rsquo;s capacity to make sense of the unthinkable, an intimate and life-affirming meditation on life, loss, love, art-and finding the strength to stand up again".
For some time after Iran's Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa calling for Rushdie's death over alleged blasphemy in his novel "The Satanic Verses", the writer lived in isolation and with round-the-clock security. But for years since, he had moved about with few restrictions, until the stabbing at the Chautauqua Institution.
"Knife by Salman Rushdie is an important book about the world we live, and the place of literature in it. It is a must read," Milee Ashwarya, publisher - Penguin Random House India, said in a statement.
His other works include the Booker Prize-winning "Midnight's Children", "Shame" and "The Moor's Last Sigh". Rushdie is also a prominent advocate for free expression and a former president of PEN America. He had also penned a third person memoir &ldquo;Joseph Anton&rdquo; about his years in hiding after the Fatwa.
"&rsquo;Knife&rsquo; is a searing book, and a reminder of the power of words to make sense of the unthinkable. We are honoured to publish it, and amazed at Salman&rsquo;s determination to tell his story, and to return to the work he loves," Nihar Malaviya, CEO - Penguin Random House, said.&nbsp;

The man charged with stabbing Salman Rushdie on a lecture stage in western New York said in an interview that he was surprised to learn the accomplished author had survived the attack.
Speaking to the New York Post from jail, Hadi Matar said he decided to see Rushdie at the Chautauqua Institution after he saw a tweet last winter about the writer's planned appearance.
“I don't like the person. I don't think he's a very good person,” Matar told the newspaper. “He's someone who attacked Islam. He attacked their beliefs, the belief systems.” Matar, 24, said he considered late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini “a great person” but wouldn't say whether he was following a fatwa, or edict, issued by Khomeini in Iran in 1989 that called for Rushdie's death after the author published “The Satanic Verses.” Iran has denied involvement in the attack. Matar, who lives in Fairview, New Jersey, said he hadn't had any contact with Iran's Revolutionary Guard. He told the Post he had only read “a couple pages” of “The Satanic Verses.” Rushdie, 75, suffered a damaged liver and severed nerves in an arm and an eye, according to his agent, in the attack Friday. His agent, Andrew Wylie, said his condition has improved and he is on the road to recovery.
Matar, who is charged with attempted murder and assault, told the Post he took a bus to Buffalo the day before the attack and then took a Lyft to Chautauqua, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) away.
He bought a pass to the Chautauqua Institution grounds and then slept in the grass the night before Rushdie's planned talk.

In Iran's first public reaction on the attack on author Salman Rushdie, its government official denied on Monday that Tehran was involved in the assault on the notable author. 
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said nobody has the right to accuse his country in this regard.
He added that Iran did not have any other information more than what the American media has reported.

While fatwas can be revised or revoked, Iran's current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who took over after Khomeini has never done so.
As recently as February 2017, Khamenei said, “The decree is as Imam Khomeini issued.” Since 1979, Iran has targeted dissidents abroad in attacks. Tensions with the West, particularly the United States have spiked since then President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled America out of Iran's nuclear deal with world powers in 2018.
