Sakshi, India's only female Olympic medallist in wresting, has been honoured for her relentless fight against alleged sexual harassment of female wrestlers by former Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Sakshi along with two-time World Championships bronze medallist Vinesh Phogat and Tokyo Olympics bronze winner Bajrang Punia spearheaded the protest against Singh at the Jantar Mantar, demanding his arrest for intimidating and allegedly sexually harassing female grapplers of the country.

Taking note of the statement made by WFI’s counsel, Justice Sachin Datta said the trials shall proceed as per the circular issued by the ad-hoc committee supervising the affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India.

Taking note of the statement made by WFI&rsquo;s counsel, Justice Sachin Datta said the trials shall proceed as per the circular issued by the ad-hoc committee supervising the affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), which has been placed under suspension by the Centre, told the Delhi High Court on Thursday it will withdraw its circular on conducting selection trials for the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 and Asian Olympic Games Qualifier Wrestling Tournament.
Taking note of the statement made by WFI&rsquo;s counsel, Justice Sachin Datta said the trials shall proceed as per the circular issued by the ad-hoc committee supervising the affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India.
The ad-hoc committee of the WFI had issued a press release on February 9 saying it will hold the trials for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers (April 19-21) and World Olympic Qualifiers (May 9-12) on March 10 and 11 at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala and Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex in Sonipat.
The Indian Olympic Association had on December 27 constituted a three-member ad hoc committee to run the day-to-day affairs of the WFI after the Union Sports Ministry suspended the national body for wrestling for not following the provisions of its own constitution while taking decisions.
&ldquo;After some arguments, Senior advocate Dayan Krishnan submits that WFI shall withdraw the circular. The trials shall proceed as per the circular of February 9. Needless to say that the Ad-Hoc Committee will ensure that all the eligible athletes are allowed to participate in the trial,&rdquo; the court said.
The court listed the matter for further hearing on April 26.
The high court had on March 4 sought responses of the Centre, WFI and the ad-hoc committee on a petition filed by wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and her husband Satyawart Kadian for declaring as illegal the December 2023 elections held by the sports body and setting it aside.
The wrestlers were at the forefront of last year's protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi demanding the arrest of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment of seven women grapplers.
The plea contended that the WFI elections, held on December 21, 2023, were in blatant violation of the Sports Code and sought a direction to the federation to "cease and desist" from undertaking any activity pertaining to the sport of wrestling.
The plea also sought a direction to the Centre and WFI's ad-hoc committee to make the wrestling federation compliant with the National Sports Development Code, 2011, and for conducting the national selection trials for all international events under the court's supervision and monitoring.
Sanjay Kumar Singh, a close associate of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, was elected as the new president of the WFI during the election.
"The petitioner prays the court may be pleased to set aside and declare elections held by R2/WFI on December 21, 2023 as illegal and void ab-initio since the same has been held in blatant violation of the sports code," the petition said.
The petitioners have accused the WFI of several wrongdoing.
"The present writ petition is being filed by the petitioners inter alia assailing, challenging, and seeking directions against the illegal action of the suspended Wrestling Federation of India conducting selection trials for the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 and Asian Olympic Games Qualifier Wrestling Tournament notified through its circular dated February 26, 2024 against the directives of the ad-hoc Committee for Wrestling Federation of India," the petition said.
"The petitioners would like to place on record that apart from them, there are many other athletes/wrestlers who are also facing similar harassment owing to their upright/honest stand against respondent no. 2/WFI and its officials over the illegalities by respondent no.2 in collusion and under instructions of respondent no. 2's/WFI former President and member of Parliament from Kaiserganj constituency namely Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The petitioners have accused the WFI of trying to silence and sideline them, impacting their prospects of participating in international events.
"Every possible means have been deployed by respondent no. 2/WFI to muffle the voices of the protesting petitioners and deprive them from any future scope of participation at the international level irrespective of their merit and competence," it added.
The petitioners have sought a direction to the ad-hoc committee to continue taking care of the day-to-day affairs and management of the WFI or, in the alternative, appoint a retired Supreme Court judge as an administrator to take over the affairs and management of the wrestling body.
The petition claimed the WFI has been a "habitual offender" as it has deliberately flouted directions passed by the Sports Ministry and the ad-hoc committee on multiple occasions, adversely affecting the career prospects of Indian wrestlers.&nbsp;

31-year-old Malik had announced retirement in December last year after Brij Bhushan's close aide Sanjay Singh was elected president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in a tearful press conference.
She, along with another Olympic-bronze medallist Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, have been protesting for months, demanding Sharan Singh's removal and arrest.
"It's been more than a year, there is so much mental pressure and we have been trying to fight in every possible way to make this protest a success, so I'll not be able to continue wrestling," Malik said in a panel discussion on the impact of the #MeToo movement in India.
"I got (Olympic) bronze for India and I want my juniors to get silver and gold. I would love to see each and every girl in India pursuing her dreams," she added.
Mailk, Punia and Phogat have continued protesting against Sharan Singh even after his removal as WFI head.
They have alleged that the new federation president is merely a figure-head and Sharan Singh is actually calling the shots.
Her refusal to come out of retirement rules Malik out of this month's national trials for the Olympic qualifiers. Punia has already withdrawn, saying he would not participate in any event organised by the Sanjay Singh-led WFI.
The WFI was recently granted a reprieve when the provisional suspension on it was lifted by United World Wrestling (UWW) on the condition that the protesting wrestlers would be invited for all trials and there would be no discrimination.
"Many people have told me to continue but I don't want to wrestle among people like Brij Bhushan. It feels bad when you see him walking around freely. It seems he is still in control," she said.
"I have not just heard about these incidents, I have personally experienced the harassment. I have given up wrestling but youngsters are hoping that our movement will boot out people like Brij Bhushan. We have done everything we could.
"I am once again pleading with government to ensure that people related to him are not allowed into wrestling's administration. I will always stay positive and I am hoping for a positive outcome," she added.

Olympic medal-winning grapplers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia on Wednesday alleged that national federation chief Sanjay Singh used devious means to get the suspension on WFI lifted by United World Wrestling (UWW) and threatened to restart their agitation against the body.
The UWW on Tuesday lifted the provisional suspension on India but directed the national federation to provide written guarantees that there would be no discriminatory action against the protesting trio of Punia, Malik and Vinesh Phogat.
The suspension was imposed by UWW in August last year after the WFI failed to hold elections in time.
Punia, Malik and Phogat have been protesting for more than a year, demanding the arrest of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for allegedly sexually harassing women grapplers.
"We came to know yesterday that Sanjay Singh had done some setting with UWW to get the suspension lifted. Brij Bhushan and Sanjay Singh have left no stone unturned to show that they are above the law," said Sakshi in a video posted on 'X'.
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, when asked about the latest developments on the sidelines of the Chess Olympiad Torch hand-off ceremony here, said, "We will let you know what we will do." Sakshi stressed that if the BJP MP's loyalists are allowed to run the affairs of the WFI, the protesting wrestlers will be left with no choice but to restart the agitation.
"Our protest has only been suspended. I might have retired from wrestling but I not will tolerate Brij Bhushan or his people running the federation and harassing women," she asserted.
"In the next 2-4 days, we will contact the people associated with our agitation and chalk out the future course of action. I urge the government (to ensure) that Brij Bhushan or his group are barred forever from (running) the federation and some good people are entrusted the task to do the job. Otherwise, we will have to restart the path of protest," warned Sakshi.
Punia echoed the sentiment in his video message on the same platform.
"Just 2-3 days back, Brij Bhushan's son became the president of the UP wrestling body despite him saying saying no one from his family will come into wrestling administration. The government had promised that Brij Bhushan or anyone of his relatives or associates will not govern the sport," Punia said.
Brij Bhushan has stated repeatedly that he has nothing to do with wrestling after completing his tenure as WFI president.
During the December elections, his loyalist Sanjay Singh was elected president, but within three days of taking charge, the sports ministry suspended the WFI for violating its own constitution by announcing the dates of the age-group nationals at a short notice.
Sakshi also alleged that the Sanjay Singh-led WFI had misused the federation's funds by conducting parallel nationals.
"The (IOA-constituted) ad-hoc committee conducted the senior nationals in a very professional manner (in Jaipur earlier this month). We welcomed that. Brij Bhushan and Sanjay Singh started breaking all the rules by conducting parallel nationals (in Pune) and threatening the coaches and referees and misusing the federation's money," she said.

Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik on Thursday advised the country's wrestlers to participate in the Nationals conducted by the ad-hoc committee in Jaipur and not in the event organised by the suspended national federation.
Along with Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi led a prolonged fight against the Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) former president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of sexual harassment and intimidation by the trio.
"I urge the wrestlers to go and play in the Nationals organised by the ad-hoc committee and not to take part in the tournament organised by the WFI. The tournament organised by the ad-hoc panel is the recognised event," Sakshi said in a video on X.
Last month, the ad-hoc committee governing the WFI announced that the senior national championships for wrestling would be held from February 2 to 5 in Jaipur.
The Bhupinder Singh Bajwa-led panel said the event will feature competitions across senior free style, Greco Roman, and women's categories.
The Bajwa-headed panel was formed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to oversee the WFI after the newly-elected body, led by Brij Bhushan loyalist Sanjay Singh, was suspended by the sports ministry for violating its own constitution.
A woman wrestler from Rohtak, however, told PTI that they will compete in the Nationals to be conducted by WFI in Pune, despite the government according recognition to the Nationals organised by the ad-hoc panel.
"Most states will go to Pune only. There is an issue in the state of Haryana because there are factions in the association. But if you look at other states, like Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan, all are going to Pune. So, we are also going there," she said when asked about the government directive.
"Most of the wrestlers in our akhara will go to Pune but a few will also go to the Nationals in Jaipur. But you will see a majority of the players in Pune," said the wrestler who did not wish to be named.&nbsp;

Olympic medallist wrestlers Sakshi and Bajrang met Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur at his residence regarding the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) election, which will be held later this month. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections will be held on December 21 and the results will be declared on the same day after counting of votes. This comes after the Supreme Court recently set aside the stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, paving the way for the process of electing the new WFI governing body. "As the dates of the elections for the WFI have been announced, we met him regarding that. We are hopeful that the Government will keep their promise. The entire process of elections shall adhere to the stipulations and relevant provisions of the ratified constitution of the WFI and the Model Guidelines, 2011 issued by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. United World Wrestling suspended the Wrestling Federation of India in August this year due to the delay in holding elections. UWW decided that WFI "failed to conduct elections" in the specified duration. The WFI elections were originally slated to be held on August 12. The Punjab and Haryana High Court, which is hearing a petition, in August extended the stay on WFI elections till September 25. The stay order came in the wake of a petition filed by the Haryana Wrestling Association (HWA) which challenged the move to allow the Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association to cast votes in the WFI polls. Elections for the federation, which oversees wrestling in India, were initially planned for June this year. However, protests by star Indian wrestlers - Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat - over sexual harassment allegations against the then WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and cases relating to state units led to the postponement of polls. An ad hoc committee set up by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is running the affairs of WFI at present.

Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik has firmly stated that she never sought any exemption from the Asian Games trials, even though the IOA ad-hoc panel offered to consider her case similarly to fellow wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia.
In light of the recent controversy surrounding exemptions granted to Vinesh and Bajrang without proper protocols, Sakshi, who competes in the 62 kg category, expressed her concerns. She believes that the move to exempt certain wrestlers from trials is an attempt by the government to disrupt the unity among wrestlers.
Sakshi, along with Vinesh and Bajrang, had been at the forefront of protests against the outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who recently obtained bail after facing allegations of sexual harassment.

The Rouse Avenue court in Delhi has issued summons to former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and co-accused Vinod Tomar in the sexual harassment case against the duo.
The court summoned the former WFI administrators after taking cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police. Both Brij Bhushan, a BJP MP, and former WFI assistant secretary Tomar, were accused by a number of wrestlers of sexual harassment.

Wrestlers’ Protest: Sakshi Malik, husband address rumours surrounding demonstration | WATCH

The 11-minute long video captioned &lsquo;The Truth&rsquo; was posted on Malik&rsquo;s Twitter and addressed a plethora of issues from political shades of their demonstration to the support they&rsquo;ve received from different facets of society.&nbsp;

Two days after the Delhi Police filed a chargesheet against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik and her wrestler husband Satyawart Kadian addressed rumours surrounding the grapplers&rsquo; protest. From political shades of their demonstration to the support they&rsquo;ve received from different facets of society, the duo spoke at length in the 11-minute long video captioned &lsquo;The Truth&rsquo; posted on Malik&rsquo;s Twitter. The wrestlers denied any involvement of the Indian National Congress in their protest, stating, &lsquo;When we began our protest in January, the permission for the Jantar Mantar sit-in was undertaken by leaders of the ruling BJP, Tirth Rana and Babita Phogat. How can Congress be the instigator of our protest then?&rsquo; Relating Phogat and Rana&rsquo;s involvement, Kadian argued that the wrestlers are not protesting against the government, &lsquo;Our fight cannot be against the government, because Brij Bhushan is from the ruling party and those who took permission for the January protest are also from the BJP.&rsquo; They said that their fight is against Brij Bhushan because he misused his position to wrong several wrestlers. The wrestlers have alleged sexual harassment by Brij Bhushan with incidents dating back to 2012, addressing questions of why they kept quiet for so long, Kadian said, &lsquo;We wanted to speak up sooner but there was a lack of unit among the wrestling community.&rsquo; He added that if someone tried to speak up individually, the then WFI chief would come to know about it and hindrances would begin to crop up in the said person&rsquo;s career. Malik said that for the wrestlers, coming from humble backgrounds, fighting against a powerful man like Brij Bhushan, was not feasible. Further in their video, Kadian and Malik spoke about the May 28 detention of the wrestlers and how disturbed they were after the incident. They even appeared to distance themselves from the farmer unions that have extended immense support to the grapplers&rsquo; community. Two days after they were detained and then released, the wrestlers had decided to immerse their medals into the Ganga river in Haridwar. According to Kadian, the wrestlers were made to wait till 7 PM that day because &lsquo;their issue was being discussed by top politicians&rsquo;. After several hours, the grapplers were eventually dissuaded from the immersion. Following which, visuals showed them handing over their medals to farmer leader Naresh Tikait. However, in the video Kadian claims, &lsquo;We returned our medals to our parents and coaches. We don&rsquo;t know what was going on at that time.&rsquo; Towards the end of the video, the pair also spoke about rumours of farmer unions being upset with the wrestlers, &lsquo;Now we are hearing that Khaps are upset with us. I request everyone to steer clear of rumours, please forgive us if we have hurt anyone even unintentionally.&rsquo; In conclusion, they thanked several political leaders for supporting their protest, including former J&amp;K governor Satyapal Malik, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, BJP leaders Tirth Rana and Babita Phogat. The 2016 Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik who is at the forefront of the wrestlers' agitation against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh informed that the next step will be decided after they get the chargesheet that the Delhi Police has filed against the former Wrestling Federation of India chief.&nbsp; While speaking to ANI, Malik said, 'The chargesheet clearly states that he is guilty but our lawyer has filed an application so that he gets his hands on the chargesheet at the ear;iest so that we can find out the charges. After that we will see if the charges are correct or not. Our next step would come once we see everything-- whether the promises that were made are being fulfilled or not. We are waiting.&nbsp; Delhi Police filed a chargesheet in the FIR against Brij Bhushan under section 354, 354D, 354A and 506(1) of IPC.&nbsp;

While Delhi Police seek cancellation of the FIR filed under POCSO, India's ace wrestler Sakshi Malik who has been one of the prominent faces of the wrestlers' protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has questioned the investigation of the police in the matter.&nbsp; The lone minor wrestler whose father changed the statement has backtracked from the sexual assault allegation saying that he had falsely accused the Wrestling Federation of India chief.&nbsp; However, Malik flagged concerns around the retraction and told The Indian Express, 'In the POCSO case if Brij Bhushan was arrested when the minor's statement was first recorded before the magistrate then the minor would not have withdrawn her complaint, and not only that, other girls would have come forward and complained about the sexual harassment, there was pressure and threats is what I have heard. The court will have to decide what to do' Delhi Police on June 15 informed that after the completion of their investigation they have filed an application for the cancellation of the FIR in teh Patiala House Court.

The IOA's ad-hoc committee has called for WFI's Special General Meeting on July 4, when the elections will also be conducted.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has confirmed its plan to hold the impending elections of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on July 4.
To oversee the proceedings and ensure fair polls, former Jammu &amp; Kashmir High Court Chief Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar has been appointed as the returning officer.
In its letter to Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar, the Indian Olympic Association wrote, "IOA has to take steps forward to conduct elections of the WFI Executive Committee and we are pleased to appoint you as a returning officer to conduct the elections of the WFI. You may consider appointing one assistant returning officer and other staff to assist in conducting the elections."
While the SGM and elections date, for now, has been set for July 4, sources suggest that Justice Mittal Kumar has the authority to determine whether to hold the polls on that date or postpone them.
On April 27, the Indian Olympic Association had established an ad-hoc committee, consisting of three members, to oversee the daily operations of the Wrestling Federation as directed by the Sports Ministry.
The protesting wrestlers have been demanding fair polls to choose the successor to BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment.

After a media organisation carried the news of Sakshi Malik withdrawing from the wrestlers' protest, the Rio Olympic bronze medallist issued a clarification.
Sakshi denied all such reports and tweeted to say that no wrestler has stepped back from the fight for justice.
'We will fight till justice is delivered. Please refrain from running any false news,' she requested.
However, all 3 wrestlers, Sakshi, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have taken back their government jobs in Indian Railways. The grapplers had met Home Minister Amit Shah recently.

Delhi police filed a case against the protesting wrestlers and protest organisers on Sunday evening as they tried to march towards the new Parliament building.
The FIR was filed in connection with the scuffle that broke out at Jantar Mantar. Top Indian wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia were detained but were later released by the police.
They have been accused of rioting, unlawful assembly, and causing obstruction in the duty of a public servant, among other things.

Several visuals showed the protesting grapplers being dragged into police buses with one particular clip of detained Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik speaking to reporters from the window of a bus.

Wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Sangeeta Phogat and Vinesh Phogat were detained by Delhi police on Sunday afternoon during their protest march to the newly-inaugurated Parliament building. Several visuals showed the protesting grapplers being dragged into police buses one after the other. Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik was also captured talking to the reporters from the window of the bus. The wrestlers were on their way to the new Parliament building for their Women&rsquo;s Mahapanchayat that was scheduled for Sunday. However, they were stopped by cops midway and their supporters were detained.
Vinesh Phogat, who spoke to the media gathered at the protest site, had earlier said, &lsquo;We just want to carry out a peaceful protest. We have not broken any (police) barricades nor do we intend to. Our protest is peaceful." Meanwhile, Delhi Police had made a prior statement where they had said that they will not let anything hamper the inauguration of the new Parliament building, not even the wrestlers&rsquo; protest.
