Alankar Sawai was questioned in relation to a money laundering case against Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale.

A close aide of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was recently questioned for 3 days by the Enforcement Directorate, according to the news agency PTI.
Alankar Sawai was questioned in relation to a money laundering case against Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale. Sawai, who is a former banker, is said to be the head of Rahul Gandhi's research team.
According to the ED, TMC leader Gokhale had said that Alankar Sawai paid him ₹23.54 lakh in cash for "social media work and other consultancy".
On being asked as to why Sawai had paid him in cash, Gokhale stated that only Sawai can answer this question, the ED told the court in its remand paper.
"Further, on being asked regarding any written agreement with Alankar Sawai in respect of social media work he stated that it was only verbal agreement with Alankar Sawai," the agency said.
The ED alleged that these cash deposits were received by Gokhale when he was a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Sawai is understood to have been questioned about these instances and his statement was recorded under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Official sources said the questioning and confronting of the two has not helped them unearth the fund trail as stated by Gokhale even as Sawai purportedly denied making any cash payments.

TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale arrested in money laundering case

The state police arrested Gokhale from Delhi in December last year in a case of alleged misuse of money he had collected through crowdfunding.

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Saket Gokhale in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a crowdfunding initiative in Gujarat, official sources said.
Gokhale was taken into custody under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Ahmedabad where he is lodged in judicial custody in a Gujarat Police case.
He was produced before an Ahmedabad court which sent him to the ED custody till January 31, officials said.
The state police arrested Gokhale from Delhi in December last year in a case of alleged misuse of money he had collected through crowdfunding.
The Gujarat High Court had on Monday refused regular bail to Gokhale in this case as it asked him to approach the court only after a charge sheet is filed.
The TMC leader had approached the high court after a sessions court and a magistrate's court in Ahmedabad denied him bail recently following his arrest and expiry of remand.
Gokhale has been in judicial custody since January 5 and lodged at a jail in Ahmedabad. He was arrested by the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch from Delhi on December 30, 2022, in this case.
The police FIR was registered on a complaint filed by an Ahmedabad resident who claimed to have donated Rs 500 to Gokhale through online mode.
According to police, the case was not just about Rs 500 as Gokhale allegedly collected over Rs 70 lakh from more than 1,700 people through 'ourdemocracy' platform and used that money for personal use. &nbsp; "There was no element of forgery in funds collected by Gokhale through an online platform which is used by even political parties. He is innocent and made a scapegoat. He is a full-time activist sustaining on donations received through crowdfunding. As soon as he joined TMC, he stopped accepting funds to prove his bonafide," Gokhale's lawyer had told the court.
In December, the Gujarat Police arrested him twice for allegedly spreading fake news regarding the cost incurred on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Morbi town following a bridge collapse tragedy.&nbsp;

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday backed party spokesperson Saket Gokhale, who has been arrested by the Gujarat Police over a tweet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and said that she condemned the BJP government&rsquo;s "vindictive attitude".
Banerjee, who is visiting Rajasthan, also claimed that Gokhale made no mistake.
"It's a very bad, and sad (incident). Saket (Gokhale) is a bright man. He is very popular on social media. He has made no mistake," Banerjee told reporters at Jaipur airport.
"I condemn this vindictive attitude. He (Saket) has been arrested because he tweeted against the Prime Minister. People also tweet against me... We are really feeling sorry about the situation," she said before heading for Pushkar.
The Gujarat Police have detained Gokhale over a tweet endorsing an alleged fake news report about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Morbi after a bridge collapse incident there on October 31, which had claimed 135 lives.
Gokhale recently tweeted a news clipping which apparently appeared to have been published in a leading Gujarati newspaper.
Banerjee paid a visit to Ajmer and Pushkar shrines during the day.

"The police let him make that one two-minute phone call and then confiscated his phone and all his belongings," he added.
O'Brien said that it was a "cooked up case" regarding Gokhale's tweet on the Morbi bridge collapse. "All this cannot silence TMC and the Opposition. BJP taking political vendetta to another level," he tweeted.

Hearing the defamation suit, the High Court asked whether any Tom, Dick or Harry could make any vilifying comment against anyone on the Internet, to damage a person's reputation. The Court said that the right to reputation is a protected fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
