With the country staring at fresh premiership elections, here are three potential candidates who could replace the controversial Tory leader:&nbsp;
Rishi Sunak&nbsp; Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, a former hedge-fund manager and the former finance minister, is believed to be the top contender for the post.&nbsp; Soon after his appointment as Chancellor of the Exchequer, he quickly had to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and became hugely popular for rolling out a massive package worth billions of pounds to help businesses and workers.&nbsp; Sunak, who is a low-tax, small-state conservative, later faced criticism for his &lsquo;slow&rsquo; and &lsquo;inadequate&rsquo; response to the cost-of-living crisis affecting Britons. The controversy over his millionaire wife's tax affairs also dented his reputation.&nbsp; Amid the growing unpopularity of Johnson, Sunak&rsquo;s early move to quit the cabinet may have gained him some brownie points.
Liz Truss Foreign secretary Liz Truss has been a popular leader within the Conservative party for her support of Brexit and her libertarian views on economics and trade. Her support for Johnson after the departure of Sunak and Javid also bolstered her standing among loyalists.&nbsp; Truss is the second woman to lead the Foreign Office and has been credited for securing the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe after six years and for imposing sanctions on Russia.&nbsp; First elected in 2010 as MP for South West Norfolk, she has had her own share of controversies. Once, she was mocked for giving a speech at the 2015 Conservative conference which featured an impassioned section on UK cheese imports.&nbsp;

He is also a fan of former UK PM Margaret Thatcher. &nbsp; Born to a first-generation Pakistani immigrant family, Javid rose from modest beginnings. His father worked as a bus conductor. He pursued a successful career in the City before becoming a Tory MP in 2010.&nbsp; As health secretary, Javid shifted the government&rsquo;s COVID-19 policy away from mass restrictions and towards individual responsibility.&nbsp;
For any one of these candidates to be successful, they need the support of at least eight Conservative MPs to stand.
In case there are more than two candidates, Tory MPs will hold a series of votes until just two remain. This is followed by a ballot of the wider Conservative party membership to select the winner.

That triggered a series of reports about past allegations levelled against Pincher and questions about why Johnson promoted him to a senior job enforcing party discipline. The resignations come after months of scandals and missteps, including a damning report into parties that broke strict Covid-19 lockdowns and the resignation of Conservative MP Neil Parish after he was caught watching pornography on his mobile phone in the House of Commons.  He is also facing a parliamentary probe into whether he lied to MPs over the lockdown-breaching parties in Downing Street. Johnson has also come under fire for not doing enough to tackle a cost-of-living crisis, with many Britons struggling to cope with rising fuel and food prices. Economists say the country is now heading for a sharp slowdown or possibly a recession.

The 42-year-old British Indian minister posted his resignation letter on Twitter soon after another senior Cabinet colleague, UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid, resigned.
The ministerial exits will come as a big blow to Johnson's leadership and follow a day of high political drama since a former civil servant spoke out about Downing Street's handling of allegations against recently suspended MP Chris Pincher.
“The public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously,” Sunak tweeted.
“I recognise this may be last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning,” he said.
It came soon after Johnson said he "bitterly regrets" giving Pincher a government role as Deputy Chief Whip after being made aware of a misconduct complaint against him.
"In hindsight it was the wrong thing to do and I apologise to everyone who has been badly affected by it. I just want to make absolutely clear that there's no place in this government for anybody who is predatory or abuses their position of power," he said.
Sajid Javid, a British citizen of Pakistani origin, in his resignation letter said, "We [Conservative party] may not have always been popular, but we have been competent in acting in the national interest. Sadly, in the current circumstances, the public are concluding that we are now neither.
"The vote of confidence last month showed that a large number of our colleagues agree.
"I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership and you have therefore lost my confidence too.
