High-stakes US-Russia talks on ending the war in Ukraine failed to yield a breakthrough on Tuesday, as the Kremlin said "no compromise" had been found yet on the key question of territory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin met US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff in the Kremlin, after earlier signalling that his forces were ready to fight on to achieve Russia's initial war goals.
The meeting is a crucial moment for Ukraine in what could be a fraught week following days of frantic diplomacy. At the heart of it is a US plan to bring peace, which has since been revised under pressure from Kyiv and its European backers.
On occupied Ukrainian territories, "so far we haven't found a compromise, but some American solutions can be discussed," top Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said after the meeting in the Kremlin.
"Some proposed formulations do not fit us, and work will continue," he added.
Trump said progress on ending the nearly four-year-long war would not be easy.
"Our people are over in Russia right now to see if we can get it settled," he said during a cabinet meeting at the White House.
"Not an easy situation, let me tell you. What a mess."
But in an interview broadcast Tuesday night on Fox News, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said talks with Russia "have made some progress" to end the war with Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that any plan must end the war for good, and not just lead to a pause in the fighting that began with Moscow's offensive in February 2022.
He also said in a social media post that "there will be no simple solutions".
"What matters is that everything is fair and transparent. That there are no games played behind Ukraine's back. That nothing is decided without Ukraine -- about us, about our future," he said.
 - Moscow rejects amended plan -
Kushner and Witkoff were to present Putin with the new version of the US plan, which has been hammered out after the initial version raised fears in Kyiv and elsewhere in Europe that it made too many concessions to Moscow.
Ushakov said the initial US plan was broken down into four parts, which were discussed during the five-hour meeting in the Kremlin.
"There were some points we could agree on," the top Putin diplomatic aide said, but "the president did not hide our critical, even negative, stance on a number of proposals".
Putin has demanded that Kyiv surrender territory Moscow claims as its own. The Kremlin also rejects any European force in Ukraine to monitor a truce.
In his social media post, Zelensky said "the most difficult questions are about territories, about frozen (Russian) assets... And about security guarantees."
Still, the talks in Moscow were "useful", Ushakov said, and Russia and US positions did not become farther apart after it.
 - Russian pressure -
Putin appeared to send a hawkish message shortly before the US talks began.
He said that Pokrovsk, an east Ukrainian stronghold that Russian forces claim they recently captured, was a "good foothold for solving all the tasks set at the beginning of the special military operation", using the Kremlin's term for the war.
Apart from Pokrovsk, Kyiv is under pressure on several fronts.
Russian forces advanced swiftly in November in eastern Ukraine, and Kyiv has been rocked by graft scandals that ended with the resignation of its top negotiator on the conflict -- Zelensky's right-hand man.
Moscow has also stepped up drone and missile attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity and heating, with Zelensky accusing the Kremlin of trying to "break" his country.
The Russian leader also accused Europe of sabotaging a deal on the conflict and sent a grim message, saying: "We are not planning to go to war with Europe, but if Europe wants to and starts, we are ready right now."
Zelensky has said he expects to discuss key issues with the US president and suggested Moscow's real motivation for the US talks was to ease Western sanctions.

Europe is worried Washington and Moscow could strike a deal over its head or force Ukraine into making unfair concessions.
The original 28-point US plan revealed last month hewed so closely to Moscow's demands it prompted accusations that Russia was involved in drafting it, which Washington denied.
Bloomberg last month reported on an audio recording showing that Witkoff helped coach Russian officials on how Putin should speak to Trump.
Witkoff has met with Putin multiple times, but US media reported that it was the first time that Kushner -- who also helped broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza earlier this year -- has joined talks with Putin.

He said the attack, which struck other regions of the country, was targeting Kyiv. &ldquo;A specially calculated attack to cause as much harm as possible to people and civilians,&rdquo; Zelenskyy said in a post on Telegram.
He added the Azerbaijan Embassy was damaged by fragments of an Iskander missile.
Fifteen people were hospitalised, including one man in critical condition and a pregnant woman, after a series of powerful explosions sounded in the city and airs defences were activated.
City authorities warned that power and water outages are possible.
In the Darnytskyi district, debris landed in the yard of a residential building and on the grounds of an educational facility. A car caught fire after being hit by falling fragments.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, falling debris sparked a fire in an open area near a medical facility and inside a nonresidential building.

In the Desnianskyi district, fires were recorded in two residential buildings.
In the Solomianskyi district, a fire broke out on the roof of a residential building.
In the Sviatoshynskyi district, debris caused a fire in a private home.
In the Kyiv region, Russian strikes damaged critical infrastructure and private homes, injuring at least one civilian, regional head Mykola Kalashnyk said.
A 55-year-old man in Bila Tserkva suffered thermal burns and was hospitalised, he said. Fires broke out in private houses in the capital's suburbs.
The strike came as European Union officials warned this week that Ukraine must continue to crack down on corruption following a major graft scandal that has put top nuclear energy officials under scrutiny.
But they also offered assurances that aid will continue to flow as Kyiv strains to hold back Russia's invasion.

Ukraine's future could hinge on a hastily assembled meeting Monday at the White House as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy brings with him an extraordinary cadre of European leaders to show US President Donald Trump a united front against Russia.
The European political heavy-hitters were left out of Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin last Friday, and they look to safeguard Ukraine and the continent from any widening aggression from Moscow.
By arriving as a group, they hope to avoid any debacles like Zelenskyy's February meeting in the Oval Office, where Trump chastised him for not showing enough gratitude for American military aid.
The meeting also is a test of America's relationship with its closest allies after the European Union and United Kingdom accepted Trump's tariff hikes partly because they wanted his support on Ukraine.
Monday's showing is a sign both of the progress and the possible distress coming out of the Alaska meeting as many of Europe's leaders are descending on Washington with the explicit goal of protecting Ukraine's interests, a rare and sweeping show of diplomatic force.
&ldquo;It's important that America agrees to work with Europe to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, and therefore for all of Europe,&rdquo; Zelenskyy said on X.
The night before the meeting, however, Trump seemed to put the onus on Zelenskyy to agree to concessions and suggested that Ukraine could not regain Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, setting off an armed conflict that led to its broader 2022 invasion.
"President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight," he wrote Sunday night on social media. &ldquo;Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!&rdquo; Zelenskyy appeared to respond with his own post late Sunday, saying, &ldquo;We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably.&rdquo; He went on to say that &ldquo;peace must be lasting,&rdquo; not as it was after Russia seized Crimea and part of the Donbas in eastern Ukraine eight years ago, and &ldquo;Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack.&rdquo; The sitdown in Alaska yielded the possible contours for stopping the war in Ukraine, though it was unclear whether the terms discussed would ultimately be acceptable to Zelenskyy or Putin.
The European heavyweights coming to Washington Planning to join Zelenskyy in America's capital are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
On the table for discussion are possible NATO-like security guarantees that Ukraine would need for any peace with Russia to be durable. Putin opposes Ukraine joining NATO outright, yet Trump's team claims the Russian leader is open to allies agreeing to defend Ukraine if it comes under attack.
Trump briefed Zelenskyy and European allies shortly after the Putin meeting, and details from the discussions emerged in a scattershot way that seemed to rankle the US president, who had chosen not to outline any terms when appearing afterward with Putin.
&ldquo;BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA,&rdquo; Trump posted Sunday on social media. The president also bemoaned media coverage of his summit with Putin and said on Truth Social: "I had a great meeting in Alaska." Following the Alaska summit, Trump declared that a ceasefire was not necessary for peace talks to proceed, a sudden shift to a position favoured by Putin.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that a ceasefire was still possible but that &ldquo;the best way to end this conflict is through a full peace deal." The issues on the table for the European allies European officials confirmed that Trump told them Putin is still seeking control of the entire Donbas region, even though Ukraine controls a meaningful share of it.
And Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, said the US and its allies could offer Ukraine a NATO-like commitment to defend the country if it came under attack as the possible security guarantee.
"How that's constructed, what we call it, how it's built, what guarantees are built into it that are enforceable, that's what we'll be talking about over the next few days with our partners who are coming in from overseas,&rdquo; Rubio told NBC's &ldquo;Meet the Press.&rdquo; Rubio said on Fox News' &ldquo;Sunday Morning Futures&rdquo; that such a commitment &ldquo;would be a very big move" by Trump. He expects the delegations will &ldquo;spend six, seven hours talking about these things, maybe more, and try to get to a point where we have something more concrete.&rdquo; Monday's meeting will likely be very tough for Zelenskyy, an official close to the ongoing talks said. That official spoke on condition of anonymity to speak openly about thinking within Ukraine and between allies.
Zelenskyy needs to prevent a scenario in which he gets blamed for blocking peace talks by rejecting Putin's maximalist demand on the Donbas, the official said. It is a demand Zelenskyy has said many times he will never accept because it is unconstitutional and could create a launching pad for future Russian attacks.
If confronted with pressure to accept Putin's demands, Zelenskyy would likely have to revert to a skill he has demonstrated time and again: diplomatic tact.
Ukrainian leadership is seeking a trilateral meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump and Putin to discuss sensitive matters, including territorial issues.
Zelenskyy is looking to avoid another Oval Office blowup After enduring a public tirade by Trump and Vice President JD Vance in February, Zelenskyy worked to repair relations with the US.
Constant diplomatic communication and a 15-minute meeting at the Vatican in April on the sidelines of Pope Francis' funeral helped turn the tide. Trump appeared at the time to be swayed by Zelenskyy's conditions for peace.
But Trump says he cares primarily about ending the war, an ambition that led him after his meeting with Putin to discard the need for a ceasefire.
European allies also have worked with Trump, reaching a deal in July for NATO allies to buy weapons from the US for Ukraine.
Ahead of Monday's meeting, France's Macron stressed the importance of building up Ukraine's military and the need to show Putin that Europe interprets his moves as a threat to other nations.
&ldquo;If we are weak with Russia today, we'll be preparing the conflicts of tomorrow and they will impact the Ukrainians and &mdash; make no mistake &mdash; they can impact us, too,&rdquo; Macron said.

The US State Department accused Russia Wednesday of having used a chemical weapon against Ukrainian forces in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, while also announcing fresh sanctions against Moscow.
In addition to the chemical agent chloropicrin, Russia also used "riot control agents (tear gas) as a method of warfare in Ukraine, also in violation of the CWC," the department said in a factsheet.
"The use of such chemicals is not an isolated incident, and is probably driven by Russian forces' desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield," the State Department said.
Meanwhile the US Treasury Department announced sweeping sanctions aimed at crippling Russia's military and industrial capabilities -- including targeting nearly 300 entities in Russia, China and other countries accused of supporting President Vladimir Putin's invasion.
The sanctions are meant to punish companies that help Moscow acquire weapons for its war in Ukraine. They also target Russian government entities and companies involved in the country's chemical and biological weapons programs.
Russia has said it no longer possesses a military chemical arsenal, but the country faces pressure for more transparency over the alleged use of toxic weapons.
According to the US National Institutes of Health, the chemical chloropicrin is used both as a warfare agent and pesticide. If inhaled, it poses a health risk.

"Today's actions will further disrupt and degrade Russia's war efforts by going after its military industrial base and the evasion networks that help supply it," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.
The accusations and sanctions come a week after US President Joe Biden signed a much-delayed bill to provide new funding for Ukraine as Kyiv's military struggles to hold back Russian advances.
"Even as we're throwing sand in the gears of Russia's war machine, President (Joe) Biden's recently-passed National Security Supplemental is providing badly-needed military, economic, and humanitarian support to bolster Ukraine's courageous resistance," Yellen said.
"Combined, our support for Ukraine and our relentless targeting of Russia's military capacity is giving Ukraine a critical leg-up on the battlefield."
As part of the measures, the State Department blacklisted additional individuals and companies involved in Moscow's energy, mining and metals sectors.
The sanctions also targeted individuals connected to the death of Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny who died in a Siberian prison in February.
The almost 300 targets sanctioned included dozens of actors accused of enabling Russia to acquire desperately needed technology and equipment from abroad, the Treasury said.
Some of those targeted were based in countries such as China that have faced increasing pressure from Washington over support for Russia during its 15-month invasion of Ukraine.
"This support enables Russia to continue its war against Ukraine and poses a significant threat to international security," the Treasury Department said.
Other than China, targeted non-Russian entities were located in Azerbaijan, Belgium, Slovakia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.
These companies "enable Russia to acquire desperately-needed technology and equipment from abroad," the statement said.

"No courts will help if force is not countered by force, and deaths by total executions of terrorists and repressions against their families," he said.
"If it is established that these are terrorists of the Kyiv regime, it is impossible to do otherwise. All of them must be found and mercilessly destroyed as terrorists, including officials of the state that committed such an atrocity."
The Ukrainian foreign ministry strongly, however, firmly rejected these claims saying that these are planned provocations to further fuel anti-Ukrainian hysteria in Russian society.
Ukraine said it viewed any such allegation "to be a planned provocation by the Kremlin to further fuel anti-Ukrainian hysteria in Russian society, create conditions for increased mobilisation of Russian citizens to participate in the criminal aggression against our country and discredit Ukraine in the eyes of the international community".
Meanwhile, Russia has arrested 11 people -- including all four assailants -- over Friday's deadly attack on a concert hall, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday.
The head of the FSB security service informed Russian President Vladimir Putin "about the detention of 11 people, including all four terrorists directly involved in carrying out the attack," Russian state news agencies cited the Kremlin as saying in a statement.

The attack reported Sunday is the latest in a series of recent drone assaults that Moscow has blamed on Kyiv.

According to Musk Russia &ldquo;would win a war of attrition&rdquo; as its troops heavily outnumber Ukrainians. He also tried to highlight the futility of war by writing, &ldquo;The flower of Ukrainian &amp; Russian youth are dying in trenches, with no meaningful change in territory.&rdquo;
In October 2022,&nbsp; Musk had outlined a peace plan which was criticised by the Ukrainian authorities who accused him of echoing Russian demands.

He said that planes taking part in the Ukraine offensive "are leaving as normal" from the airfield.
"We took (the aerodrome) under control so that the attack aviation did not strike us, but strike Ukrainians," Prigozhin said.
He called on Russians not to believe what they are being told on state television.
"When they tell you that PMC Wagner interfered with work and that's why something on the front collapsed.. Things on the front collapsed not for this reason," he said, addressing Russians.
"A huge amount of territory is lost. Soldiers have been killed, three, four times more than what it says in documents shown to the top (leadership)."
Prigozhin claimed Russia's Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov "ran away from here when he found out that we are approaching the building."
Authorities in Rostov have urged residents to stay at home.
Russia opened a criminal case against Prigozhin, accusing him of trying to start an "armed rebellion."

Russian strikes battered cities across Ukraine on Friday, killing 26 people including five children, as Kyiv said preparations for a counter-offensive against Moscow's forces were nearly complete.
The deadly new attacks included a strike on a residential block in the historic city of Uman in central Ukraine, where AFP journalists saw rescue workers extracting victims' remains from a destroyed residential building.
The barrage of almost two dozen missiles ended a weeks-long pause following the repeated Russian strikes that had aimed to paralyse Ukraine's energy grid during the winter months.
On Friday evening, workers in Uman, the site of an annual Hasidic pilgrimage, pulled the body of another child from under the rubble. Authorities said Russian cruise missiles killed 23 people -- including four children -- in Uman.
Earlier in the day, Dmitry, a 33-year-old resident from Lugansk, an eastern city under Russian control, was looking for his children.
"I want to see my children, they are under the rubble," he said.
Rescuers were using cranes to search for survivors among the remains of the multi-storey housing block in the city of 80,000 inhabitants.
"I've seen a lot, but I haven't lost my children before. Now I want to see my children, alive or dead," Dmitry said.
Russian missiles also hit the central city of Dnipro, already grief-stricken after a January strike on a tower block that killed more than 40 people.
Authorities said the strikes in Dnipro killed a 31-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter while they slept.
The young woman's parents were hospitalised.
"Neighbours say that it was a quiet and kind family," regional authorities said.

As per reports atleast 150,000 people on each side have died. The ecnomic ramifications have also been immense. Ukraine itself has seen economic output contract about over 30%. Not just Ukraine, over the past year, the war has caused multiple shocks to the global economy. As per estimates, the war could cost the global economy about $2.8 trillion in terms of lost output. Russia and Ukraine together constitue a large part of the world's energy and food supply. The war&nbsp; disrupted wheat, barley and cooking oil supplies from Ukraine and Russia, to Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia.
Infact both countries account for 25% of the world's wheat imports. In fact, Ukraine, known as "breadbasket of the world", was unable to continue with its supplies, sending food prices soaring across the world.&nbsp;
The spikes in energy and food prices led to inflation spiking to a multi-decade high of 9% in the U.S. and over 10% in Europe. The Food and Agriculture Organization says its food price index reached a record high in 2022, up by 14.3% from 2021.
Supply chain disruptions, which were still prevalent from the pandemic, once again saw a set back. As a result, there was a spike in both food and energy prices.&nbsp;
However, now, supply chains have returned to pre-war levels. As per Moneycontrol, the Baltic Dry Index was as high as 5,650 in early October 2021 before it fell to under 1,300 by the end of January 2022. However, the Russia-Ukraine war pushed the index over 3,000 by May 2022. It has since collapsed to under 1,000. This index measures the average price of shipping dry bulk across several routes and is considered a lead indicator of economic activity.
