What does an RT-PCR test detect? RT-PCR tests can only confirm whether the person has an infection or not. Many RT-PCR tests look for an identifier in the coronavirus spike protein, the protruded area that allows the virus to enter the human body.  How do you get to know the variant? To determine the Covid variant, a genome sequencing study has to be done.   Is an RT-PCR enough? A complete RT-PCR report for COVID includes a test for ‘N’ , ‘S’ , ‘E’ and ‘ORF’ genes. Absence of the ‘S’ gene and other presence of other genes, is an indirect way of knowing that Omicron is present. However, most of the current ICMR approved RT-PCR test kits being used in India target the E, Rd Rp and N genes and not the S gene which is the target of the Omicron variant.   So, what are the experts saying? Public health experts want laboratories to conduct RT-PCR tests in whole, for all three genes, particularly on international travelers, to help detect the absence of the ‘S’ gene. But absence of the S gene, doesn’t confirm the presence of the Omicron variant, and sequencing will still need to be done.   What is the current situation? Genome sequencing is a slow, complicated and expensive exercise. Therefore, not all infected samples are sent for genome sequencing. Normally, only about 2 to 5 per cent of the positive samples are sent for gene analysis.  This is what the WHO is saying on test efficacy! The widely used PCR tests continue to detect infection, including infection with Omicron, as we have seen with other variants as well. Studies are underway to determine whether there is any impact on other types of tests, including rapid antigen detection tests."

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday approved a Rapid Antigen Kit to conduct Covid test at home.
The ICMR has advised that the kit should be used only on symptomatic individuals and on immediate contacts of laboratory confirmed positive cases. The top medical body has advised against indiscriminate use of the kit by people.
Thehome-based rapid antigen testing kit has been manufactured by Pune-based Mylab Discovery Solutions Ltd.
Only nasal swab will be required for this rapid antigen testing, the ICMR said, adding the process should be conducted as per the procedure described by the manufacturer in the user manual and an app which can be downloaded from the Google play store and Apple store.
All individuals who test positive may be considered as true positives and no repeat testing is required. All symptomatic individuals who test negative should get themselves immediately tested by RTPCR, the ICMR said.

If you&rsquo;re getting tested for the novel coronavirus, make sure to note your CT value in the test report.&nbsp;The CT count or the cycle threshold is a number mentioned in your RT-PCR test, indicating the level of seriousness of the infection.&nbsp;In simpler terms,&nbsp;the CT count tells you whether you are&nbsp;Covid-19&nbsp;positive or not and to what extent the&nbsp;infection&nbsp;has spread in&nbsp;your&nbsp;body.&nbsp;
As samples move through cycles, the sooner the virus is detected, the higher the viral load is supposed to be.&nbsp;&nbsp;
According to the ICMR,&nbsp;35 is the number to confirm the presence of virus infection, which means if a person has a CT value of 35 or more, then they do not have Covid-19.&nbsp;People with&nbsp;a CT value of&nbsp;25 to 34&nbsp;are said to&nbsp;have mild signs of infection. But if this value is 24 or less, then the condition of such a patient can be very serious.&nbsp;

This is the highest single-day spike in the national capital in the last nearly 50 days, as fresh cases were reported in excess of 2,000 from July 7 to July 10. It stood at 2,008 on July 7 and 2,089 on July 10. The national capital has so far recorded 1.73 lakh&nbsp;Covid-19 cases.&nbsp;

PTI,&nbsp;New Delhi: Delhi recorded the highest single-day spike of 2,024 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the tally to over 1.73 lakh, while the death toll mounted to 4,426 with 22 fresh fatalities, authorities said.
This is the highest single-day spike in the national capital in the last nearly 50 days, as fresh cases were reported in excess of 2,000 from July 7 to July 10. It stood at 2,008 on July 7 and 2,089 on July 10.
According to Delhi government's health bulletin, 22 fresh fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours.
A total of 20,437 tests - 6,881 RTPCR/CBNAAT/TrueNat tests and 13,556 rapid antigen tests - were conducted in the last 24 hours, it said.
A total of 15,69,096 tests have been conducted till date while the number of tests per million population stands at 82,584.
The positivity rate in the national capital stands at 9.90 per cent while the recovery rate at 89.23 per cent, the bulletin said.
Sunday's tally surpassed Saturday's tally when 1,954 fresh COVID-19 cases were recorded. The total cases in the city on Saturday stood at 1,71,366 and the death toll rose to 4,404.
The total number of COVID-19 cases stood at 1,73,390, out of which 1,54,171 patients have either recovered, migrated out or been discharged. The number of active cases stands at 14,793, up from 14,040 the previous day, it said.
A total of 1,249 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, the bulletin stated.
The number of containment zones stands at 820, up from 803 the previous day.
Out of 14,145 beds, 4,030 are occupied.
A total of 4,154 beds of Covid Care Centres are occupied by people under quarantine, including travellers who came by the Vande Bharat Mission and bubble flights.
Fresh cases and active cases have shown an increase in the last several days, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announcing on Wednesday that COVID-19 tests in Delhi will be doubled to 40,000 per day within a week as there has been a marginal increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the city.
Delhi has seen a fluctuation in the number of coronavirus cases since the beginning of this month.
On August 1, the city recorded 1,118 fresh cases while for the next three days, the number of infections reported in a single-day stayed below the 1,000-mark.
From August 5 to August 9, the number of fresh Covid-19 cases again stayed above the 1,000-mark only to come down to 707 on August 10. Three days between August 11 and August 22, the city saw less than 1,000 fresh cases - August 13 (956), August 16 (652), and August 17 (787).
