In view of the pandemic situation, passengers of flights from China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Bangkok are required to upload their RT-PCR report in advance. Even after landing in India, they will undergo thermal screening, he said.
"We have issued an order for them to be quarantined in the country if found positive or with fever," the minister said.
With China and other countries witnessing a surge in Covid cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday cautioned against complacency, called for a strict vigil and directed that the ongoing surveillance measures, especially at the international airports, be strengthened.
The Union health ministry has already asked the civil aviation ministry to ensure random post-arrival Covid testing at airports of 2 per cent of the passengers arriving in India in each international flight from Saturday to minimise the risk of ingress of any new variant of the coronavirus in the country.&nbsp;

BA.2, on the other hand, does not have the same mutation which makes it difficult to detect.&nbsp;

It is stealthy as it beats RT-PCR tests, which essentially means the virus passes through the scanner untraced.
Even patients with typical symptoms of the disease test negative for the viral infection, sometimes twice or thrice even through RT-PCR. In fact according to what the managing director of Aakash Healthcare Dr Aashish Chaudhry told Times of India, even patients who show one of defining characteristics of Covid-19 such as the gray patches in lungs, have also tested negative.
Associate professor of clinical microbiology at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, Dr. Pratibha Kale while explaining the cause &nbsp;told TOI that it is possible that in these patients the virus don&rsquo;t colonise the nasal or throat cavity and therefore swab samples taken from these areas don&rsquo;t yield a positive result.
Such patients have to then undergo bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) to confirm the diagnosis.
It has been noticed that all patients who had first tested negative through conventional RT-PCR testing but had the symptoms tested positive in the lavage test.
It is a cause of extreme worry for doctors. The chief of the pulmonology division at Max Healthcare, Dr. Vivek Nangia said such patients when admitted in non-Covid areas, can delay treatment and continue to spread the infection

For many people, whose RT-PCR test came negative on subsequent BAL tests, they came out positive. Such patients, can continue to spread the infection while remaining undetected for the coronavirus, makes the fight against Covid-19 more daunting.

This new method does away with the need for a biosafety lab, which makes it possible for it to be used at airports and railway stations to test passengers before they board a plane or a train. The simple swab test, the researchers say, is almost 100% accurate, and takes about 30 minutes from sample collection to delivering a result, compared to five to six hours for the RT-PCR test. And it costs just 100 rupees per test, which can go down further if done at a mass level.
