Rishabh Pant will walk into an immensely challenging leadership exam in the absence of Shubman Gill as India face the uphill task of restoring parity against a well-prepared South Africa on a surface that is expected to offer appreciable turn in the second and final Test starting in Guwahati on Saturday.
An even tougher test looms for head coach Gautam Gambhir, whose often perplexing calls have left the dressing room and think-tank grappling for clarity. The aura of invincibility while playing at home that accompanied the Indian teams of last three decades has vanished when it comes to the current one, which is looking vulnerable.
For the first time in many years, India are going into a home Test match as underdogs and not favourites. Ask any player worth his salt and he would tell that it is not a happy place to be. If the New Zealand spin duo of Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner tore the perception of invincibility to shreds in 2024, Simon Harmer and his other colleagues are making a young Indian side look even more vulnerable.
The lack of a proper technique to handle spinners is apparent and jarring. Add to it, a massive shift in mindset on tracks that implode, has made matters worse. While Gambhir, with support of men who matter in the BCCI, is perfectly safe when it comes to his job, a 0-5 home record against two SENA countries will damage his coaching legacy forever, and no amount of ICC Trophies would be enough to paper over that aspect.
And in these trying circumstances, Pant will take up leadership in the absence of Gill. He would know quite well that his batting on a red soil Barsapara track will be as important as his decision-making.
That Gill was never in contention to play the second Test after suffering from neck spasms was always clear, but the Indian team management and the BCCI, true to their nature of avoiding clarity till the last minute, denied the inevitable till it became undeniable. According to reliable sources, the 26-year-old has left the city to rest and recuperate.
Sai Sudharsan looks to be the most likely candidate to take Gill's place, although whether he bats at No.3 or Washington Sundar is allowed to continue remains to be seen.
When it comes to captaincy experience, Pant led an Indian T20 team against the same opponents a few years back when Rohit Sharma was rested. But there isn't enough data on his red-ball decision-making skills. Pant did lead a Delhi side to a Ranji Trophy final back in 2017, losing to eventual champions Vidarbha.
However, what would keep experts more interested is the calls he took on the second evening and third morning of the opening Test in Kolkata. By stumps on the second evening, India had reduced South Africa to 93 for 7 with help of spinners. What left a lot to be desired was Pant's eternal wait before handing the ball to Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah on the third morning. By that time, Temba Bavuma had added those additional 60 runs which became decisive.
While Pant, the lively chatterbox behind the stumps, is an incentive for the bowlers, it is Pant the skipper who will have to convince his coach to make some prudent calls when it comes to team selection.
With too many left-handers in the line-up &mdash; as many as seven &mdash; off-spinner Simon Harmer might just have a field day if the covering of grass that was seen on the track on Thursday is shaved off by BCCI curators Taposh Chatterjee and Ashish Bhowmick.
In any case, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia wouldn't want this venue's first ever Test to be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Hence, one of the spinners &mdash; Axar Patel or Kuldeep Yadav &mdash; could make way for all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, which can help India exploit any underlying moisture if a third seamer comes into play.
In case his bowling isn't required, being a right-hander with a cavalier approach to batting might just help on these kinds of surfaces. But in the end, it all boils down to faith in players instead of being a slave of the surface.
When it comes to trust, the head coach, for once, would like to walk the talk before another lost home series which will have way more implications than he can ever think of.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has criticised Ben Stokes for his dismissive remarks on injury substitutions, saying the England captain should "think before speaking", as "karma" came back to haunt them when they were left a batter short following Chris Woakes' shoulder niggle in the fifth Test.
India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had retired hurt on the first day of the drawn fourth Test at Manchester but returned to bat the next day despite scans confirming a fracture in his right foot.
India coach Gautam Gambhir had subsequently called for the introduction of injury replacements in Test cricket, a suggestion that Stokes dismissed, terming it &ldquo;absolutely ridiculous.&rdquo;
However, in the fifth Test at The Oval, England faced a similar situation when Woakes suffered a fractured shoulder but still came out to bat on the final day with England nine wickets down and needing fewer than 20 runs to win.
"I want to talk about another imperfection in this series. There's a Tamil saying that loosely translates to 'Your karma will affect you almost instantly'. What you sow is what you reap,&rdquo; Ashwin said on his YouTube channel &lsquo;Ash Ki Baat&rsquo;.
"After the last Test, there were questions asked about the injury to Pant. Gautam Gambhir said that such injuries need a substitution. And when Stokes was asked about this response, he simply brushed it away, calling it a joke. I am a big fan of Stokes' cricketing abilities and his attitude. But he can think and then reply." Highlighting Woakes&rsquo; determination to continue batting despite his injury, Ashwin added, "He was ready to give his life to win the game for his team, and almost did it too. He had the game awareness to run and give the strike to Atkinson. Hats off to Chris Woakes. Remarkable attitude, and a remarkable way to step out for your team, and put your body on the line." Ashwin also referenced former England captain Michael Vaughan&rsquo;s comments on the need for cricket&rsquo;s rules to evolve.
"Michael Vaughan said this is one area where the game can evolve. Substitutions should be allowed. All I'm saying is: show a little empathy for the other team. Stokes should have considered what it would be like if a player of Rishabh Pant's calibre was in his team and got injured.
"Wouldn't you want a substitution? Wouldn't that be fair? You are free to share your opinion &mdash; but using words like &lsquo;joke&rsquo; and &lsquo;ridiculous&rsquo; isn&rsquo;t respectful. Think before you speak. Karma hits instantly," he added.

Rishabh Pant was on Thursday ruled out of wicket-keeping duties in the ongoing fourth Test against England after fracturing his toe on the opening day of the match at Old Trafford in Manchester but will be "available to bat as per team requirements" during the crunch game.
The 27-year-old Pant retired hurt at 37 and went for scans after copping a blow on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off England pacer Chris Woakes on Wednesday.
"Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper," the BCCI posted on X.

"Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements," it added.
This was after early inputs from the Board indicated that Pant has been ruled out of the series and Ishan Kishan would be called in as cover for him.
Going into day two, all the chatter at Old Trafford was about Pant, who is probably the only one in the current Indian batting line-up with an ability to change the momentum with his audacious stroke-play.
After undergoing additional scans, Pant arrived at the stadium wearing a moon boot (a protective orthopaedic boot) to support his injured foot.
"He is ruled out for the next six weeks. Ishan Kishan will be called in as cover. His metatarsal bones (a group of five long bones located between the ankle and toe) seem to be shattered. It doesn't look good at all," a BCCI source told PTI.
The severity of the injury was apparent given the blood that was seen seeping off Pant's right foot. The affected area had considerable swelling as well.
On day one, Pant was the only one to take the attack to Jofra Archer and Co. while the other batters struck at three runs per over.
Before getting hit on his right foot, Pant had perfected an outrageous sweep off Archer before smashing Brydon Carse down the ground as if he was a spinner.
India have already lost all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to a knee problem, while pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh are missing the ongoing game because of a groin niggle and a finger injury respectively.
Pant's injury adds to the problems for the team which is trailing 1-2 right now.
Kishan, who recently played two County matches for Nottinghamshire, was also a part of the India A squad that faced the England Lions ahead of the Test series, though the 26-year-old did not appear in any of the two matches.
The think tank can also ask KL Rahul to keep wickets, but he has not performed that role since the tour of South Africa in the 2023-24 season.
"He hardly put his foot on the ground (after the impact). The immediate swelling was a worry for me. I have had a metatarsal injury myself and they are small fragile bones.
"The fact that he could not put any weight on it, it doesn't look good at all," Ricky Ponting, who is commentating on the game, had said on 'Sky Sports' after the incident.
The fifth and final Test of the series is scheduled to be held at London's Kennington Oval from July 31.
This was the second injury for Pant in this series as he had bruised his finger while keeping during the third Test at the Lord's, which prevented him from guarding the stumps in England's second innings.
The flamboyant player made his comeback to international cricket only last year after surviving a life-threatening car crash in 2022.&nbsp;

At stumps, Ravindra Jadeja (19 batting off 37) and Shardul Thakur (19 batting off 36) were holding fort in fading light.
Put in to bat in overcast conditions, Indian openers KL Rahul (46 off 98 balls) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (58 off 107) put on 94 runs for their highest stand of the series before Sudharsan (61 off 151) produced a dogged knock under pressure to justify his selection over Karun Nair.
Batting alongside Sudharsan, Pant (37 retired hurt off 48) had just started flexing his muscles before missing a reverse hit off a full ball from Chris Woakes.
The impact of the ball was on Pant&rsquo;s right foot, leaving him in a lot of pain and eventually he had to be taken off the field in a golf cart.
There were also blood stains on the foot, enough to unsettle the Indian fans and the dressing room. Pant had come into this must-win game after recovering from a finger injury he suffered while keeping during the Lord&rsquo;s Test.
The sun stayed away for the majority of the day but the slow nature of the pitch gave the batters enough time to tackle the extra pace of Jofra Archer.
While Sudharsan was at the crease, he looked comfortable and also had luck going his way, having been dropped down the leg side on 20 by keeper Jamie Smith off Ben Stokes.
He rode that luck to play a couple of pull shots off Archer before playing a crisp back foot punch off Stokes.
The England captain, however, kept dragging an odd ball down the leg side in his effort to induce an edge off Sudharsan&rsquo;s bat before resorting to the short ball tactic.
Sudharsan was up to the task until he pulled one straight into the hands of Brydon Carse at fine leg.
The young Indian batter was watchful at the start of the innings, scoring only off balls pitched on middle and leg. He flicked Archer for his first four before cover driving Liam Dawson.
Until his injury, Pant played his usual way, successfully sweeping Archer before dispatching Carse for a six down the ground.
In the afternoon session, England removed a well set Rahul and Jaiswal before sending back Shubman Gill to leave India at 149 for three at tea.
Having failed to land a wicket in the morning session, England broke through shortly after lunch with Woakes finally rewarded for relentlessly bowling in the off-stump channel. He had Rahul caught at third slip with a ball that seamed away from length.
The second wicket of the session came via left-arm spinner Dawson, who took just seven balls to strike in his first Test in eight years.
Jaiswal played for the spin but the ball did not turn that match, taking a thick outside edge on way to the first slip.
India captain Gill (12) did not last long as he misjudged an incoming ball from Stokes to not offer a shot, trapping him in front.
In the morning session, Jaiswal survived a probing spell from Woakes while Rahul looked solid as ever to steer India to 78 for no loss at lunch.
No team opting to bowl first has ever won at Old Trafford but Stokes ignored that piece of statistics on an overcast morning.
The ball did seam around but lack of pace allowed the Indian openers to play the pull shot with relative ease.
Gill thought it was a good toss to lose and that seems to be the case considering the dry and slow nature of the surface.
Woakes made it most difficult for the batters, especially Jaiswal who was beaten on a number of occasions by the England pacer.
In the first over of the match bowled by Woakes, two edges of Jaiswal&rsquo;s bat did not carry, signalling there was not enough carry off the pitch.
In his eight-over spell, Woakes was pulled twice with Rahul and Jaiswal dispatching him in front of the square.
A streaky drive from Rahul off Woakes brought the Indian opener&rsquo;s 1000 runs in England, a testament to his stellar work at the top of the order even in this series.
Jaiswal, who was removed by Archer twice at Lord&rsquo;s, made a conscious effort to leave balls. The southpaw was also forced to change his bat when a ball from Woakes seamed back sharply from round the wicket to hit high on his bat, breaking the handle.
The openers somehow managed to survive the first hour of play, taking India to 42 for no loss in 14 overs.
Despite backing Nair on the eve of the game, Gill dropped the number three batter for Sudharsan .

Having said that, Stokes gave due respect to the opposition.
"Good team. They always fight hard, come hard. Very passionate team," he said when asked about the trailing Indian team.
"It's pretty clear that there's always pressure on shoulders of international sportsmen, but playing for India, especially in cricket, there's probably a bit more on any other nation. So, yeah, a very proud nation. Don't take anything for granted from last week. We start at 0-0 again." England had chased down 371 on day five at Leeds to complete their second highest successful chase in Test cricket. The highest chase, 378, too came against India here at Edgbaston three years ago.

"I was a shadow of myself, but it goes to show how much a five-day Test match takes out of you. I was pretty tired, but I'm all over that now and ready to go tomorrow." Asked if he is back to his best, he added: "I did everything possible to not worry about anything outside of what we normally worry about. But coming out of that game, feeling good in all of my spells, rhythm-wise, being able to back up spells throughout the day.
"But I managed to maintain my pace, which was one of the things I wanted to concentrate on."

Pant, who had an exceptional outing with the bat during the Headingley Test with hundreds in both the innings, was reprimanded for his on-field conduct during England's first innings.
The 27-year-old was found to have breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
"Pant was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to showing dissent at an Umpire's decision during an International Match," the ICC said in a statement.
In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Pant's disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in 24 months.
The incident happened in the 61st over of England's innings, when Harry Brook and Ben Stokes were batting. Pant was seen having a discussion with the umpires regarding the condition of the ball.
When the umpires refused to change the ball after checking it with the ball gauge, the wicket-keeper showed his dissent by throwing the ball on the ground in front of the umpires.
There was no disciplinary hearing as Pant admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by ICC match referee Richie Richardson.
The charges were brought in by the on-field umpires, Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel, along with the third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and the fourth umpire, Mike Burns.
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

The 27-year-old, who made history during the IPL auction in November by being sold to Lucknow for Rs 27 crores ($3.2 million), joins the team for the upcoming edition of the lucrative T20 tournament.
Pant, known for his flamboyant left-handed batting, returned to captain Delhi Capitals last season after a 14-month hiatus from elite cricket due to a car accident. However, he parted ways with the Capitals after the team finished sixth in the 2024 IPL season standings.
"I see a born leader in Rishabh Pant. From my point of view, he will be probably the best captain IPL has seen," said Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of Lucknow, during a special TV broadcast. Chasing a near improbable target of 340, both Rohit (9 off 40 balls) and Kohli (5) failed to battle their technical frailties and mental cobwebs as India lost seven wickets for 34 runs in just 20.4 overs in the final session to be all out for 155 in 79.1 overs.
Australian captain Pat Cummins (3/28 in 18 overs) was superb as usual and Scott Boland was also magnificent (3/39 in 16 overs) in his every spell.
Nathan Lyon (2/37 in 20.1 overs) took advantage of variable bounce while Mitchell Starc (1/25 in 16 overs) got the prized scalp of Kohli.
This was after an 88-run fourth-wicket stand between Yashasvi Jasiwal and Rishabh Pant.
"Pretty disappointing. We wanted to fight but we could not do it," a dejected Rohit said in the post-match presentation.
"We tried everything but they fought hard. We did not grab our chances," he conceded.
Australia now lead the series 2-1 and unless India draw level in Sydney, a third successive World Test Championship final could become a distant dream. Even to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India would need to post a win.
Save Jaiswal (84, 208 balls), whose controversial caught-behind in which the third umpire overruled technology to adjudge him out, none of the other batters performed well enough to save the team.
"They batted well in the middle session. We knew that we had to get one breakthrough and anything can happen and that proved to be the case.
"We had plenty of runs to play with, we had plenty of fielders with the helmet around," a beaming Cummins, who was also adjudged player of the match for his haul of six wickets, said in the presentation ceremony.
The art of saving Test matches has slowly become extinct but India would have depended on their two senior-most players, who are also fighting to save their legacy and reputation built over nearly two decades.
In case of Rishabh Pant, it was one bad shot too many after a full session in which he concentrated. He got a rank long hop from Travis Head but after a 103-ball vigil, it all came to a naught.
Even Jaiswal's guts and grit couldn't prevent a once highly-rated, but currently a trifle over-rated, Indian batting line-up from implosion with over-the-hill seniors and young superstars unable to handle the pressure.
The defeat could have severe repercussions as there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for skipper Rohit.
As for Kohli, despite all his white-ball exploits, the problems outside the off-stump will stick out like a sore thumb.
For Rohit, his ultra-defensive approach in the opening slot, is causing India to stare down the barrel with alarming regularity.
Rohit did all the hard work during the first hour before opposition skipper Cummins got his bunny for the 10th time in Test matches.
Kohli could never control his urge of playing the cover drive again and was caught at first slip after Mitchell Starc pushed one across with the angle.
Rahul was out without troubling the scorers after getting a second good ball in the game.
Rohit's decision to bat up the order backfired and it also tinkered with Rahul's mindset despite him being perfectly fine opening the innings.
The captaincy was pedestrian as he let the game drift on occasions and there were lot of phases that led to India's defeat but none more telling than the final wicket partnership between Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon where the target went out of reach on Sunday.
Save Jasprit Bumrah, who once again toiled manfully for 50 overs and took nine wickets, and find-of-the-series Nitish Reddy, who scored a gritty hundred, there are no positives to be taken from this defeat.
The batting, save for the second innings in the opening Perth Test, has been absolutely below par and India won't be doing themselves any favours if they have walking wickets at the top of the order.
The team is going through a tough transition and it is now time that their feisty head coach Gautam Gambhir shows some spark along with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar.

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant revealed that he was reluctant to visit the airport after his life-threatening injury as he was apprehensive about facing people while wheelchair-bound.
The 26-year-old had suffered multiple injuries following a near-fatal car crash on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in December, 2022.
He miraculously cheated death but the injuries required a major knee surgery and an extensive rehabilitation about which Pant has already opened up.
"The accident was a life-changing experience for me. When I got up after it, I wasn't even sure if I would be alive, but God was very kind to save me," Pant said on "Dhawan Karenge", a talk show hosted by India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan.
"I couldn't go to the airport because I was nervous about facing people in a wheelchair. I couldn't even brush my teeth for two months, and for six to seven months, I suffered unbearable pain," Pant recalled.
However, the flamboyant batter returned to action after 14 months in the recently concluded IPL, giving glimpses of his devastating best.&nbsp;

The 26-year-old has received a one-match suspension and a fine of INR 30 lakh due to his team's slow over-rate during their May 7th match against the Rajasthan Royals. The disciplinary action was taken because the Capitals were found to be 10 minutes behind schedule at the commencement of the final over of that game. This incident marked the team's third slow over-rate offence this season, triggering more severe penalties.
As a result of these repeated infractions, the match referee's decision to impose a suspension and fine on Pant was significant. Additionally, the rest of the Delhi Capitals squad, including the impact substitute, has been penalized with a fine of INR 12 lakh each, or 50% of their match fee, whichever amount is smaller.
Following the match referee's ruling, the Delhi Capitals management submitted an appeal, which was subsequently referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for further review. After a virtual hearing, the Ombudsman upheld the original decision, affirming that the match referee's conclusions were final and binding.
The timing of Pant's suspension is particularly impactful as he will be absent for the crucial upcoming match against RCB on Sunday, May 12. This game is especially critical as Delhi Capitals continue their push to secure a spot in the IPL playoffs. The source revealed to TOI, 'He was allowed only 5 ml of extra virgin olive oil. He couldn&rsquo;t give up his love for chilly chicken. So, a recipe was derived to make it with that much oil.'&nbsp; And as the team at the NCA came up with creative alternatives to nurse Pant back to his zenith, return to the sport demanded more sacrifices.&nbsp; A strict sleep schedule meant all gadgets would be shut off and it would be lights-out by 11 PM, enabling the prolific batter to get his 8-9 hours of rest before training again next day.&nbsp; Closer to his comeback, a fit-again Rishabh Pant eventually took up batting two and a half hours everyday. He then resumed keeping as IPL drew closer, a 45-minute session per day.&nbsp; In 2024 season, the Delhi skipper has led from the front, scoring 398 runs, including a personal best of 88* at a strike-rate of 158.57.&nbsp;

In the end, top-class bowling by Chakravarthy saw him end with figures of 3/16 in 4 overs, getting the wickets of Pant, Tristan Stubbs and Axar Patel.
