Reportedly, the riots were triggered by a road accident with unverified social media posts claiming that the collision had been caused by a police chase.
Police urged people &ldquo;not to speculate&rdquo; online, and said the crash had already happened before officers arrived.

A court here on Monday granted one-week interim bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid, arrested in a case related to the northeast Delhi riots, for attending his sister's wedding.
Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted relief to Khalid from December 23 to 30.
He has to surrender on December 30 and no extension can be granted, a court source told PTI.
The detailed order is awaited.
Khalid had moved an application seeking two weeks' interim bail -- from December 20 to January 3 -- for his sister's wedding.
Khalid was booked under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being a mastermind of the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, which had left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

Not all are riot driven: SC on rejecting plea to regulate religious processions

CJI , as per Bar and Bench, said prayers are not judicially manageable and if a permission is wrong, it can be challenged before the high court under article 266.
"Prayers seek a roving writ of mandamus, and law and order falls within the ambit of the state," CJI added
Petitioner also claimed that authorities do away with their responsibilites which eventually causes a "series of riots."
In response, CJI Chandrachud said the country is diverse and one need not portray that religious festivals are the time for riots.
He reiterated that conditions in one part are different from other parts of the country.

Northeast Delhi riots: SC refuses to stay criminal proceedings against Tahir Hussain

The bench said it is not inclined to interfere with the high court order and all remedies are open to the petitioner.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay proceedings against former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain in FIRs registered against him in connection with the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.
A bench of justices Ajay Rastogi and CT Ravi Kumar said it is not inclined to interfere with the September 16 order of the Delhi High Court as it is an interim order. Senior advocate Maneka Guruswamy, appearing for Hussain, said it is a settled law that there cannot be two FIRs for the same incident.
She said it has put Hussain in a peculiar situation that charges are framed against him for identical offences arising out of the same incident, and the same prosecution witnesses are relied upon by the investigating agency.
Hussain has moved the top court challenging the Delhi High Court's September 16 order.

The bench said it is not inclined to interfere with the high court order and all remedies are open to the petitioner.
It noted that the high court had issued notices on the applications moved by Hussain for quashing the FIR registered against him for rioting and under sections of the Arms Act at the Khajuri Khas police station, and the proceedings emanating from the FIR.
The top court said that the high court has posted the matter for further hearing on January 25 while refusing to stay proceedings on a separate application moved by Hussain saying multiple FIRs have been lodged for the same.
Hussain has been in judicial custody since March 16, 2020.

Gujarat riots case: SC grants bail to activist Teesta Setalvad

The Supreme Court granted interim bail to social rights activist Teesta Setalvad in connection with the case for allegedly fabricating evidence to frame "innocent people" in the 2002 Gujarat riots cases. Setalvad was arrested on June 25, 2022.&nbsp;
The order passed by the bench of Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and justices S Ravindra Bhat and Sudhanshu Dhulia directed Setalvad to surrender her passport with trial court till the time the Gujarat High Court decides her regular bail plea.
The top court also asked Setalvad to cooperate with the probe agency in investigation of alleged fabrication of evidence to frame people in riots cases.&nbsp;
The apex court made it clear that the order has been made from the standpoint of interim bail till the Gujarat High Court decide her bail plea independently and uninfluenced by any observations made by the supreme court.
Earlier on 1 September 2022, the top Court asked the reason for the delayed listing of activist Teesta Setalvad's bail plea by the Gujarat High Court, and asked whether "this lady has been made an exception".&nbsp;
It wondered why the high court listed the bail prayer for hearing on September 19, six weeks after it sent a notice to the state government seeking a response to her application.

Australia on last Thursday sent police, troops and diplomats to the Solomon Islands to help after anti-government demonstrators defied lockdown orders and took to the streets in violent protests. 
The deployment was expected to last for a few weeks, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.
“Our purpose here is to provide stability and security,” he said.
New Zealand on Wednesday said that it will deploy the military and police personnel in the Solomon Islands joining efforts by Australia.
Australian media reported that three bodies were recovered late Friday in a burned-out building after riots and protests subsided. No other details were given.

Senior advocate Vijay Hansaria informed the Supreme Court of the development on Tuesday. These cases relate to offences entailing punishment of life sentence.
The move comes at a time when is Supreme Court is slated to hear a petition seeking quick disposal of cases against MPs and MLAs.
Vijay Hansaria, who is amicus curiae in the matter, also pointed out that the Karnataka government has withdrawn 62 cases without giving any reason, Tamil Nadu has withdrawn four cases, Telangana has withdrawn 14 cases and Kerala has withdrawn 36 cases.
In December last year, Uttar Pradesh had drawn up a list of leaders against whom cases were being withdrawn. The list included three BJP MLAs -- Sangeet Som, Suresh Rana, Kapil Dev - and right-wing leader Sadhvi Prachi.
In March this year, cases against 12 BJP leaders, including Rana and Som, and Sadhvi Prachi were dropped with the assent of a special court.
On August 10, the Supreme Court had ordered that state prosecutors cannot withdraw criminal cases against lawmakers without prior sanction from high courts.

Delhi Police on Wednesday filed a 15,000 pages long charge sheet before a city court under UAPA and other sections&nbsp;over the violence that shook the national capital in February 2020. Police&nbsp;named 15 people&nbsp;for orchestrating the riots that killed at least 53 people and injured hundreds.
Packed in steel boxes, 2,692 pages of the vast charge sheet specifies the charges against the accused.&nbsp;The police have listed 747 witnesses in the chargesheet. 51 of the witnesses have already recorded their statements before the magistrate.&nbsp;
Clashes broke out in northeast Delhi on February 24 after violence between citizenship law supporters and protesters spiralled out of control.

The IPS officers, including Julio Rebeiro, have written to the Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava questioning police probe into the riots. Calling the police's attitude "majoritarian" the former cops have stated that "the real culprits of the violence belonging to the majority community are likely to go scot free". "While implicating leaders and activists, who expressed their views against CAA, all those who instigated violence and are associated with the ruling party have been let off the hook,&rdquo; the letter reads.
