The Democratic party has retained the majority control of the US Senate giving a major boost to President Joe Biden.
The result, the best midterm performance for a sitting party in 20 years, means the Democrats will now have 50 seats in the 100-member Senate - with the Republicans currently on 49.&nbsp;
The United States Senate has 100 seats and in the existing Congress, both the Democrats and the Republicans had 50 members each with Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democratic, casting her vote in case of a tie, in her capacity as its chairperson.
In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, for the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a beaming Biden said of the election results: &ldquo;I feel good. I'm looking forward to the next couple of years.&rdquo;
"I&rsquo;m not surprised by the turnout. I&rsquo;m incredibly pleased by the turnout. And I think it&rsquo;s a reflection of the quality of our candidates. And the &mdash; they&rsquo;re all running on the same programme," Biden said.
Before the elections, political pundits and pollsters predicted a &ldquo;red wave&rdquo; which was not to be seen anywhere during the November 8 midterm polls.
Four days after the elections, the opposition Republican Party is struggling to gain the majority in the House of Representatives, which as per the pollsters, looked like a wave for them.
This better-than-expected performance by the Democrats is attributed to the people-friendly policies of President Biden and the tilt of the youth towards him.
Republicans say they are confident they will secure majority in the House even as they voice dismay that the size of their numbers over Democrats is likely to be far smaller than pre-election predictions that forecast a "red wave" of Republican winners filling the House chamber in January, when the new Congress is sworn in.
The victory is a major boost to President Biden in the second half of his term, both for his legislative agenda and his ability to appoint top judges and other key officials.
The New York Times described the Saturday results as &ldquo;a decisive moment in an extraordinary midterm election in which Democrats defied historical patterns and predictions of major losses.&rdquo;
Control of the House has still not been decided, several days after an Election Day that fell short of predictions that Republicans would sweep to power in Washington in a repudiation of President Biden&rsquo;s leadership, the daily reported.
The Washington Post described it as welcome news for Biden, who it said was staring down the possibility of humbling defeats as the election neared. &ldquo;Now, the Senate, which oversees the confirmation of executive branch personnel and federal judges, will stay in his party&rsquo;s corner.
A Senate majority will also give the president and his party more say over legislative debates on domestic and foreign spending and other major issues,&rdquo; the daily reported.
According to Republican Sampat Shivangi, national president of the Indian American Forum for Political Education, the elections brought surprising and unexpected results.
&ldquo;It was assumed that Republicans will have a heyday and win easily both the House, and Senate and President Trump will ride the wave and announce his candidacy for Presidency in 2024,&rdquo; he noted. However, the performance of the Republican Party has been far below expectations.

The midterms take place two years after a presidential election, mid-way through a US president&rsquo;s four-year term
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives or the Lower House are on the ballot, as well as 35 Senate seats or the Upper House
Like the Indian Parliament, US Congress has 535 members
The Congress is divided into two chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
There are 100 members in the senate elected for a six-year term and every two years a third of the Senate is up for re-election.
Similarly, the House of Representatives has 435 members for a two-year term after which every seat is up for re-election.
A political party needs 51 seats to have control in the Senate, while 218 are required to achieve a majority in the House.
At stake in these elections is the control of the House of Representatives
Currently, the Democrats control both chambers, but by very slim majorities. The House is controlled by the Democrats with 221 seats and the Senate is equally split where the Republicans hold 50 seats, while Democrats hold 48. There are two independent Representatives who favour Biden. It is also a reflection of a deeper problem within the Republican Party -- the shift from conservatism (represented by the Bush-era administration) to far-right populism (represented by Trump). &nbsp;
For instance, Cheney is not the only Republican to be ousted or sidelined for taking an anti-Trump stand. Of the 10 House Republicans who voted in favour of Trump&rsquo;s impeachment last year, three lost their primaries before Cheney.&nbsp;
In her concession speech, Cheney said winning re-election "would have required that I go along with President Trump&rsquo;s lie."&nbsp;
Christine Matthews, a GOP pollster and strategist, pointed to a similar problem while speaking to Los Angeles Times. He was quoted as saying, "This is not the Republican Party of the &rsquo;80s, the &rsquo;90s or even the early 2000s... What it means to be a Republican these days &hellip; is being loyal to your tribe. It is not about issues. It&rsquo;s basically whatever Trump says it is."'&nbsp;
The recent surge in Trump-backed candidates winning congressional primaries comes after a lull when candidates he pitched for lost in traditionally Republican states such as Georgia.&nbsp; &nbsp;
Who is Republican enough?&nbsp;
Cheney's loss also signals towards an identity crisis among the Conservatives who don't endorse the Trump brand of politics, within the Grand Old Party. &nbsp;
Cheney, for instance, is as Republican as one can get. She is against abortion rights, a climate change denier, and she voted in line with Trump's agenda about 93 percent of the time when he was President. She did all the 'right' things a Republican is supposed to do. But it seems that toeing party lines is not enough to prove your loyalty to the GOP anymore. Being a blind Trump supporter is the new acid test for Republicans.&nbsp;
Her decision to vote to impeach the former President in January 2021 led to her ouster as GOP conference chair. A year later, the Republican National Committee took the unprecedented step of formally censuring her for serving on the House January 6 committee. &nbsp;&nbsp;
Graver crisis looming?
Other political observers pointed to an even greater problem -- the 2024 elections. Wyoming poll result points to a national election where Republican positions are defined by their most extreme anti-democratic voices &ndash; with Trump at the top of the ticket, said David Smith, The Guardian's Washington DC bureau chief.&nbsp;
