Global Authorities Identify 'LockBit' as the Leading Ransomware Threat
The United States, Canada, and five other countries singled out the digital extortion gang operating under the alias "LockBit" as the prime global ransomware menace on Wednesday.
In a united advisory, cyber authorities from the U.S., Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand disclosed that the extortion software of LockBit, which encrypts victims' data until a ransom is paid, has become the most popular tool among cybercriminals."The LockBit ransomware variant was the most widely utilized across the world in 2022 and maintains its rampant use in 2023," the advisory stated. It went on to say that this gang and its associates have caused significant disruption to both large and small organizations globally.
'LockBit': A Persistent Global Cyber ThreatRansomware is a malicious software or malware that cybercriminals use to seize control of a victim's computer or network, and then extort money in return for unlocking the data. In 2022, LockBit emerged as the most prevalent ransomware variant worldwide and continues its widespread operation in 2023. This cybercrime gang and its associates have adversely affected numerous organizations globally.
The advisory presented firm figures only from three countries - 1,700 LockBit-related incidents in the United States, 69 in France, and 15 in New Zealand. However, LockBit is responsible for a significant portion of the ransomware incidents tracked by all seven governments. According to the advisory, the agencies involved attribute between 11 to 23 percent of all recent ransom-demanding hacks to this group.
Ransomware has been a cyber threat for many years, and the businesses associated with it have grown increasingly sophisticated. LockBit is among several groups that use an affiliate model, allowing other cybercriminals to leverage its code and infrastructure for a share of the profits.
According to agency estimates, global ransomware attacks surged by 151 percent in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period in the previous year.
Defending Against LockBit RansomwareThe best line of defense against any ransomware or malicious attacks is to establish protective measures from the onset. Here are some practices that can help enhance your organization's resilience:

<li>Implement Strong Passwords: Avoid easy-to-guess or algorithm-crackable passwords. Opt for longer passwords with character variations and craft passphrases using self-imposed rules.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Activate Multi-factor Authentication: Discourage brute force attacks by adding layers to your initial password-based logins. Incorporate measures like biometrics or physical USB key authenticators wherever possible.</li>
<li>Reassess User Account Permissions: Limit permissions to stringent levels to deter potential threats. Pay particular attention to endpoint user-accessed and admin-level IT accounts.</li>
<li>Remove Outdated and Unused User Accounts: Regular system checks should include deactivation and removal of old accounts from previous employees that may still be active.</li>
<li>Ensure Proper System Configurations: Regularly review existing setups for new vulnerabilities and outdated policies. Security procedures should be reassessed periodically to stay updated against new cyber threats.</li>
<li>Backup Systems: Regularly create system-wide backups and clean local machine images. In the event of an incident, the only fail-safe against permanent data loss is an offline copy.</li>
<li>Implement Comprehensive Cybersecurity: While LockBit can attempt to disable protections, enterprise cybersecurity software can provide real-time protection against file downloads across the entire organization. NIA probing 'deliberate, targeted' ransomware attack on AIIMS Delhi server: MoS IT

AIIMS hacking: anti-terror agency NIA probing ransomware attack, says Union minister

On November 23, AIIMS Delhi allegedly faced a cyber attack which paralysed its servers. Later, Delhi Police's Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit registered a case of extortion and cyber terrorism.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is investigating the "deliberate and targeted" ransomware attack on the servers of AIIMS Delhi, Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Thursday.
"I can't comment on that as it is a subject matter of an investigation by the NIA...It is pretty clear that it is a deliberate and targeted effort...a ransomware attack on AIIMS' system... and NIA is investigating it," Chandrasekhar said on the sidelines of the CII Global Economic Policy Summit 2022.
The minister further said the NIA "will be in a position to comment on it when they are ready".
Chandrasekhar, last week, had said the ransomware attack on the servers of AIIMS Delhi was a conspiracy.

"It is clearly a conspiracy and it has been planned by forces that are pretty significant. It is a sophisticated ransomware attack. We will wait for the outcome of CERTin and NIA (investigations) before we come to conclusion on who is behind the ransomware attack," Chandrasekhar had said on December 2.
In a ransomware attack, cybercriminals lock access to data or a device and promise to unlock it after they are paid the desired ransom.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi allegedly faced a cyber attack on November 23, paralysing its servers. A case of extortion and cyber terrorism was registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police on November 25.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team within the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Delhi cybercrime special cell, Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, Intelligence Bureau, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), National Forensic Sciences University, National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre and NIA, among others, are investigating the cyber attack.

"The contents of the ICMR website are safe. The site is hosted at NIC Data Centre, hence the firewall is from NIC which they regularly update. The attack has been prevented successfully," the official said.

Hackers have allegedly demanded an estimated Rs 200 crore in cryptocurrency from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi as its server remained out of order for the sixth consecutive day, official sources said on Monday.
It is feared that data of around 3-4 crore patients could have been compromised due to the breach detected Wednesday morning.
Patient care services in emergency, outpatient, inpatient and laboratory wings are being managed manually as the server remained down, the sources said.
The India Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN), Delhi Police and representatives of the Ministry of Home Affairs are investigating the ransomware attack.
A case of extortion and cyber terrorism was registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police on November 25.
Official sources said internet services are blocked on computers at the hospital on the recommendations of the investigating agencies.
The AIIMS server has stored data of several VIPs, including former prime ministers, ministers, bureaucrats and judges.
"Hackers have allegedly demanded around Rs 200 crore in cryptocurrency," one of the sources told PTI.
Meanwhile, the NIC e-hospital database and application servers for e-hospital have been restored. The NIC team is scanning and cleaning infection from other e-hospital servers located at AIIMS which are required for delivery of hospital services, an official source said.
Four physical servers arranged for restoring e-hospital services have been scanned and prepared for the databases and applications.

More than 2 lakh computers around the world were infected. Computer systems in 150 countries were affected by the attack, with a total estimated loss of around $4 billion globally. The attackers initially demanded $300 in bitcoin to unlock infected computer systems. The demand was later increased to $600 in bitcoin. However, some researchers claim that no one got their data back, even if they met the demands.
2. SamSam: It made headlines in 2018 when it infected the city of Atlanta, the Colorado Department of Transportation, and the Port of San Diego, causing major disruptions of service. That same ransomware was utilized by different bad actors again that same year against hospitals, municipalities, and public institutions, causing an estimated loss of $30 million.
3. Ryuk: Both 2019 and 2020 were dominated by Ryuk ransomware spread mainly via phishing emails, containing dangerous links and attachments. Prior to recent attacks, Ryuk was the costliest to remediate, with ransom amounts exceeding $300,000 in some cases. Authorities state that Ryuk’s attacks have already caused more than $60 million in damage worldwide.
4. REvil Ransomware: This was one of the most well-known cases of 2020, especially because of the big names involved. Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, a law firm that handles international celebrities such as Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and more, was hacked in mid-May by REvil Ransomware, also popularly known as Sodinokibi. Media reports said that about 756 GB of private documents and correspondence with clients were stolen. The hacker group had taken control over the personal information of its high-profile clients and demanded a $21 million ransom.
5. Maze Ransomware: The biggest Ransomware attack of 2020 was led by technology giant Cognizant. It cost the company a staggering $50 to $70 million in revenue loss, and recovery and mitigation efforts. This barred its work from home capabilities and encrypted its servers.

The World Economic Forum points out that global leaders identified cyber risk as a major digital challenge, with 64 percent of the respondents expecting they will experience a disruptive event within the next year. Nearly one in five (19.5 percent) respondents believe cybersecurity failures will be a critical threat to the world in just the next two years, and 14.6 percent project a critical threat within two to five years.
