Congress leader Manickam Tagore took to X on Wednesday to challenge the BJP&rsquo;s assertion, calling it a &ldquo;lie&rdquo; and saying there is &ldquo;zero archival or documentary evidence to support&rdquo; the statement.
&ldquo;Nehruji explicitly opposed using government money for religious places - including the reconstruction of temples. He insisted it should be funded through public contributions, not the state,&rdquo; Tagore said.

He further asked, &ldquo;If Nehruji refused public funds even for Somnath (a famous temple in Gujarat) - a symbol revered by millions - why would he propose spending taxpayer money on Babri?&rdquo;
Singh&rsquo;s comments came during an event near Vadodara commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He claimed, &ldquo;Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to (re-)build the Babri Masjid (in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya) using public funds. If anyone opposed this proposal, it was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, born to a Gujarati mother. He did not allow the Babri Masjid to be built using public funds.&rdquo;
The minister added that public donations, not government funds, financed the work on the temple. &ldquo;A trust had been established. Not a single penny of government money was spent on this (Somnath temple) work. Similarly, the government didn't give a single rupee to construct the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The entire cost was borne by the people. This is called real secularism,&rdquo; he said.
Tagore responded by accusing Singh of using history for political ends. &ldquo;Rajnathji's statements aren't about history. They're about politics - rewriting the past to divide the present. The BJP's strategy is simple: insult our founders, invent stories, fuel polarisation,&rdquo; he said.
On the topic of Patel&rsquo;s memorial, Singh had said, &ldquo;After Patel died, common people collected funds to build a memorial for him, but when this information reached Nehruji, he said Sardar Patel was a leader of farmers, so this money should be spent on building wells and roads in the village.&rdquo;
Tagore called the suggestion &ldquo;a farce&rdquo; and added, &ldquo;Building wells and roads is the government's responsibility. The suggestion of using memorial funds for that was absurd.&rdquo; He concluded, &ldquo;We all know that Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel had a cordial relationship, and Pandit Nehru's logic was simple: public money should not be spent on mosques, temples, churches, or gurudwaras. India and the US on Friday inked a 10-year defence framework agreement, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh describing it as a "signal" of growing strategic convergence between the two nations.
The pact was sealed at a meeting in Kuala Lumpur between Singh and his American counterpart Peter Hegseth.
The firming up of the pact came amid efforts by the two sides to repair ties that came under severe strain following Washington's imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods.
"We signed the 10 years 'Framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership'. This will usher in a new era in our already strong defence partnership," Singh said on X after talks with Hegseth.
The defence minister said the pact will provide policy direction in the entire spectrum of the India-US defence relationship. "It is a signal of our growing strategic convergence and will herald a new decade of partnership," he said. "Defence will remain as a major pillar of our bilateral relations. Our partnership is critical for ensuring a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific region," Singh added.
Hegseth said the agreement "advances our defence partnership, a cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence." "We're enhancing our coordination, info sharing, and tech cooperation. Our defense ties have never been stronger," he said.
Hegseth and Singh are in Kuala Lumpur to attend a meeting of a grouping of nations comprising ASEAN member states and some of its dialogue partners.

Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day programme held at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi, Singh drew upon his experiences as both the former Home Minister and now Defence Minister to highlight how the two forces complement each other in maintaining national security.
"I myself have served as Home Minister. I have had the opportunity to observe the operations of the police up close. Furthermore, as Defence Minister, I also have the opportunity to closely observe the actions of the Army. Both Army and police are pillars of the country's security. Whoever the enemy may be, whether it comes from across the border or lurks among us, every individual who stands up for India's security represents the same spirit," Rajnath Singh said during the event.
Emphasizing India&rsquo;s journey into the &lsquo;Amrit Kal&rsquo; and its goal of achieving &lsquo;Viksit Bharat&rsquo; by 2047, Singh said maintaining a balance between internal and external security is now more critical than ever. &ldquo;The military and police may have different platforms, but their mission is the same, which is national security. Today, as we enter the Amrit Kal and look toward 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047, balancing India's internal and external security has become more important than ever," he said.
The Defence Minister also commended the police for fulfilling both their professional and moral responsibilities. &ldquo;Today, the police have to fight not only crime but also perception. It is a good thing that our police, along with its official duty, is also performing its moral duty very well. Today, the citizens of the country have confidence that if something wrong happens, the police will stand with them,&rdquo; Singh remarked.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by the police, Singh expressed regret that their contributions were not adequately acknowledged in the past. However, he credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s leadership for changing that by establishing the National Police Memorial in 2018 and equipping the police with modern weapons and better facilities.
"It's a matter of great regret that for a long time, we, as a society and as a nation, didn't fully recognise the contributions of the police. We didn't make the positive efforts that should have been made to keep their memories alive. However, under PM Modi's leadership, we established the National Police Memorial in 2018. Along with this, we also provided the police with modern weapons and better facilities... As a nation, we face many challenges, but our resources to meet them are limited. Therefore, we must optimally utilise those resources. This can only be achieved through coordination and integration with security agencies," he said.
At the event, the Defence Minister paid tribute to the police personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, honouring their courage and dedication. Police Commemoration Day, observed annually on October 21, commemorates the valour of ten policemen who were martyred in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959.
The day is marked with nationwide observances to honour the contributions of police personnel towards national security and integrity. The National Police Memorial, dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister in 2018, stands as a symbol of pride, unity, and sacrifice for the police forces. It features a 30-foot granite cenotaph called the Central Sculpture, the &lsquo;Wall of Valour&rsquo;, and a museum that chronicles the evolution of policing in India.
Every year, various commemorative events such as band displays, runs for fallen policemen, blood donation camps, and exhibitions showcasing the bravery of police personnel are organised by the Central Armed Police Forces and State Police units between October 22 and 30. The memorial continues to serve as a place of reverence &mdash; a pilgrimage site for both police personnel and citizens.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), carried out the "successful" launch of intermediate range Agni-Prime missile under a full operational scenario on Wednesday, the defence ministry said.
It has not disclosed the location of test-firing of the weapon system.
The "first-of-its-kind" launch carried out from specially designed rail-based mobile launcher, has the capability to move on rail network without any pre-conditions and it allows users to have a cross country mobility and launch within a short reaction time, Singh said.
"This successful flight test has put India in the group of select nations having capabilities that have developed canisterised launch system from on the move rail network," he said on X.
The ministry said the missile is equipped with all independent launch capability features, including the state-of-the-art communication systems and protection mechanisms.
"The missile trajectory was tracked by various ground stations and it was a text book launch meeting all mission objectives. This successful launch will enable futuristic rail-based systems induction into services," it said.
The launch was witnessed by senior scientists of the DRDO and officers of Strategic Forces Command.
The "road mobile" variant of Agni-Prime has already been inducted into the services after a series of successful flight trials.
The test-firing of the missile came over four-and-half-months after the four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan.&nbsp;

Addressing an event Here, Singh also lauded the people of border areas for supporting the administration and the armed forces during the military operation to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack.
The Defence Minister said that after the incident, he called the service chiefs and asked if they were ready for the operation.
"The chiefs of all three armed forces unanimously replied, 'We are ready for any operation.' This is India. The prime minister gave the necessary directives," he said.
"The target that was decided was hit precisely, just as planned. During Operation Sindoor, our forces received full support from all border regions. India is a country that not only considers people within its borders as members but also regards people across the world as part of its family, spreading the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam." "India does not discriminate based on caste or religion. However, terrorists killed people after identifying their religion. Our soldiers did not kill the terrorists based on religion but because of their deeds," he said.
Under Operation Sindoor in May, precision strikes were carried out on multiple targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir linked to terror groups. The operation aimed at destroying terror infrastructure and neutralising key operatives following the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts in the education sector, Singh said a significant transformation had taken place over the years that will help the country achieve new heights.
"There is a considerable difference between the education of our time and today's education.
"I had also studied in a village primary school. When I used to look at the globe on the principal's table, it felt like a magical ball," he said.
He attributed the changes to decades of hard work, saying, "In recent years, there have been significant changes in education. Today, our children can access information on the internet. Such a huge transformation has taken place." Singh expressed gratitude toward Prime Minister Modi, saying, "I want to thank Modi for showing a strong resolve to improve the education sector. Bringing reforms in education was not an easy task. Several commissions were formed and recommendations were given but the kind of reform that was needed did not come." He said that today's children can acquire information from an app about the entire world.
"In our time, science meant only the blackboard," he said.
Singh said that the visible difference in the education sector is India's real strength. "This is the real change and this is the future of India. This will take our country to even greater heights," he said.
Elaborating on India's history, he said that when people in other parts of the world were living in caves, Indian sages were writing the Natya Shastra.
"When the world did not understand the causes of diseases, India had doctors like Sushruta. Knowledge of medicinal plants like turmeric, neem and ashwagandha existed, which scientists now acknowledge," he said.
Singh also touched upon the concept of spiritual growth, saying that the importance of balancing physical and spiritual development in children's education was important.
He said that children's development should not only be physical but also spiritual.
"Spiritual development can only happen through educational institutions. Give children education that will expand their minds," he said.
He quoted former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, saying, "No one becomes great with a small mind. No one stands tall with a broken heart." "Indian sages' minds were so vast that they considered everyone in the world as part of their family and spread the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," he said.
"Imagine the mind as a circle. As you expand its circumference, your experience of happiness increases in proportion. In the end, you will attain supreme bliss," he said.
During the event, he inaugurated a sports academy in Jodhpur.
Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and other leaders were also present on the occasion.&nbsp;

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said if Pakistan cannot take action against terrorism on its soil, India is ready to help the neighbouring country as Indian forces are capable of fighting terror on the other side of the border as well.
Initiating a special discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha, Singh said three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack have been eliminated by Indian forces.
He further said that Operation Sindoor &ndash; India's response to the Pahalgam attack -- has been suspended, and can be resumed anytime if Pakistan indulges in terror activities in India again.
"India wants terrorism to end in the whole world, including Pakistan. I would advise Pakistan, if you are not able to take action against terrorism, take help from India, we are ready to help. Our forces are capable of fighting terror on this side of the border, as well as on the other side, this has been proved by Operation Sindoor," he said.
"If Pakistan commits any terror incidents in future, we will relaunch Operation Sindoor without hesitation," he said. "Our vision is that Operation Sindoor should carry on continuously. There can be a comma but no full stop," he stressed.
Singh also congratulated the security forces for killing three terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam attack in which 26 people were killed.
"I congratulate the forces for killing three terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam terror attack in April. These are the terrorists who killed people in Pahalgam," the defence minister said.
He said Home Minister Amit Shah has provided details of the joint operation by the forces in the Lok Sabha.
Singh said post the Pahalgam attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with the service chiefs, and gave them free hand to use their wisdom, strategic understanding and regional security situation to decide on the response.
He said the military leadership also showed maturity, and stressed that India's response - Operation Sindoor - was aimed at giving a clear message that India will take strong action and go to any extent against terror.
"Our action was in self-defence, it was not expansionist...The aim was to destroy terror infrastructure and give the message of zero tolerance for terror," Singh said.
"The political-military objective was to punish Pakistan for using terrorism as a proxy war," he added.
Singh said Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) urged India to stop the hostilities, and India accepted it on the condition that the operation would be suspended, not terminated.
"If Pakistan commits any terror incidents in future, we will relaunch Operation Sindoor without hesitation," he said. "Our vision is that Operation Sindoor should carry on continuously. There can be a comma but no full stop," he said.
While expressing surprise over questions raised by some opposition leaders over getting back Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), Singh said, "I am surprised at this demand, because when they were in power, they did just the opposite".
"There would come a day, I cannot predict when, but a day would come when people in PoK would be able to say proudly that they are Indians," he said.
He said the forces achieved the goals set under the operation.
"Through Operation Sindoor, we have given a clear message, India can go to any extent against terrorism," he said.
Singh appealed to the international community to stop funding for Pakistan, stating that a major portion goes into funding terror activities.
He also slammed the United Nations over Pakistan&rsquo;s appointment to the key counter-terrorism committee.
Earlier, as the Upper House reassembled at 2 pm, after it was adjourned around 11 am, Deputy Chairman Harivansh said the discussion on Operation Sindoor would be taken up, and urged the members to be mindful of the sensitive nature of the issue.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien tried to raise a point of order.
Harivansh, however, did not allow it, stating that it was not related to the topic of discussion. TMC MPs raised slogans against the SIR, and some MPs also trooped into the Well. As the Chair did not allow the Opposition MPs to speak, MPs from TMC and some other INDIA bloc parties staged a walkout from the House.

The two defence ministers held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on Thursday.
The Indian Air Force is operating around 260 Sukhoi 30-MKI jets and it is looking at upgrading the fleet under an ambitious plan.
The Russian-origin Sukhoi jets played a key role in Operation Sindoor last month.
Singh and Belousov held in-depth discussions on a range of subjects covering current geopolitical situations, cross-border terrorism and Indo-Russian defence cooperation, the defence ministry said on Friday.
The Russian defence minister highlighted the long-standing Indo-Russian relations and expressed solidarity with India on the horrendous and cowardly Pahalgam terrorist attack, it said.
"Supply of S-400 systems, Su-30 MKI upgrades, and procurement of critical military hardware in expeditious timeframes were some of the key takeaways of the meeting," the ministry said in a statement.
"It was one of the most important recent meetings between the leaders of the two nations, being held in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor and the consequent necessity of augmenting defence production, especially in critical items such as air defence, air-to-air missiles, modern capabilities, and upgrades of air platforms," it said.
In his talks with Belousov, Singh pressed for expediting the supply of two remaining units of S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems to India, it is learnt.
Russia has already supplied three units of the long-range missile systems to India under a USD 5.5 billion deal.
The missile systems were used extensively by the Indian Air Force during the May 7-10 military conflict with Pakistan.
Singh also held separate bilateral talks with his counterparts from Belarus, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan on the margins of the SCO meet.
"In his interaction with the ministers, Raksha Mantri highlighted the importance of continued engagement in defence cooperation and exploring new opportunities for collaboration in areas of technical collaboration," the defence ministry said.
He highlighted the rapid advances made by India in the field of defence production.
Singh also briefed his counterparts on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor that was aimed at dismantling the terrorist networks in Pakistan.

The SCO operates under the framework of consensus, and Singh's refusal to endorse the document resulted in the SCO defence ministers' conclave ending without a joint communique, people familiar with the matter said.
There was no clear-cut approach to combating terrorism, including cross-border terrorist activities, they said.
In his address, Singh said there should be "no double standards" in combating terrorism and urged the SCO member nations to condemn the menace with unity.
Besides India and China, the SCO comprises Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
In an oblique reference to Pakistan, Singh said some countries are using cross-border terrorism as an "instrument of policy" to provide shelter to terrorists.
"The biggest challenges that we are facing in our region are related to peace, security and trust-deficit," he said.
"And the root cause of these problems is increasing radicalisation, extremism and terrorism." Singh said peace and prosperity cannot co-exist with terrorism and proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) in the hands of non-state actors and terror groups.
"Dealing with these challenges requires decisive action, and we must unite in our fight against these evils for our collective safety and security," he said.
The defence minister said those who sponsor, nurture and utilise terrorism for their narrow and selfish ends must bear the consequences.
There should be no place for double standards in combating terrorism, he said, adding the SCO should not hesitate to criticise nations indulging in double standards in combating the menace.
Singh also said the pattern of the Pahalgam terror attack matched with Lashkar-e-Taiba's previous terror attacks in India.
The defence minister said India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the heinous terror attack in Pahalgam, exercising its right to defend against terrorism and pre-empt as well as deter further cross-border attacks.
"During the Pahalgam terror attack, victims were shot after they were profiled on religious identity. The Resistance Front, a proxy of UN-designated terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) claimed responsibility for the attack," he said.
"The pattern of the Pahalgam attack matches with LeT's previous terror attacks in India. India&rsquo;s zero tolerance for terrorism was demonstrated through its actions," he said.
"It includes our right to defend ourselves against terrorism. We have shown that epicentres of terrorism are no longer safe and we will not hesitate to target them," he said.
Singh said SCO members must condemn terrorism unequivocally as he reaffirmed India&rsquo;s resolve to fight the menace in all its forms.
The defence minister also called for proactive steps to prevent the spread of radicalisation among the youth.
"The joint statement of the Council of SCO Heads of State on 'Countering Radicalisation leading to Terrorism, Separatism and Extremism' issued during India's chairmanship symbolises our shared commitment," he stated.
Singh stressed the world faces an intricate web of challenges that range from transnational terrorism and cyberattacks to hybrid warfare.
These threats, he said, do not respect national boundaries and demand a unified response rooted in transparency, mutual trust, and collaboration.
The defence minister also noted that India has been consistent and steadfast in its policy in support of peace, security and stability in Afghanistan.

India on Friday pressed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reconsider its USD one billion assistance to Pakistan, saying Islamabad could use a large part of it to fund the terrorist infrastructure.
In an address to air warriors at Gujarat's Bhuj Air Force station, Singh confirmed use of the 'BrahMos' supersonic missiles in the Operation Sindoor and said the weapon showed Pakistan the "light of day in the darkness of night".
Sending a clear and firm message to Islamabad, the defence minister made it clear that the operation is not yet over as the current ceasefire means that India has kept Pakistan on "probation" on the basis of its behaviour.
"If the behaviour improves, it is fine; but if there is any disturbance, harshest punishment will be given," he said.
"Our actions were just a trailer, we will show the full picture, if need be. Attacking and eliminating terrorism is the new normal of new India," he said.
Under Operation Sindoor, India on early May 7 destroyed nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack.
All subsequent retaliations by Pakistan were carried out under the operation. The two sides reached an understanding on cessation of hostilities on May 10 after four days of confrontations.
In his remarks, Singh said Pakistan has again started trying to rebuild the terror infrastructure destroyed by India last week and that Islamabad will "spend the collected from the common citizens of Pakistan to pay around Rs 14 crore to Masood Azhar, the head of the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad" and a UN designated terrorist.
The Bhuj air force base was one of the military installations that Pakistan targeted during the four-day confrontation between the two militaries.
Singh cautioned against providing financial support to Pakistan saying any such assistance would be no less than terror funding.
In its board meeting in Washington on May 9, the IMF cleared a USD one billion tranche for Pakistan as part of its USD 7-billion funding programme for the country.
"The Pakistan government has announced financial assistance to rebuild the terror infrastructure of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed located in Muridke and Bahawalpur," Singh said.
"Certainly, a large part of IMF's USD one billion assistance will be used to fund the terror infrastructure. Will this not be considered indirect funding by IMF, an international organisation?" "Any financial assistance to Pakistan is no less than terror funding. The funds India gives to IMF should not be used, directly or indirectly, to create terror infrastructure in Pakistan or any other country," he said.
The defence minister said India would like the IMF to reconsider USD one billion support to Pakistan and refrain from giving any kind of assistance in future.
He commended the "effective" role played by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Operation Sindoor which he said is being appreciated by the world.
Lauding the air warriors for eliminating the terror camps in Pakistan and PoK in just 23 minutes, he said "when missiles were dropped inside the enemy territory, the world heard the echoes of India's valour and might." He added that IAF spearheaded this campaign against terrorism, and during the operation, it not only dominated the enemy, but decimated them.
Singh highlighted that India's fighter jets are capable of striking every corner of Pakistan without crossing the border. "The world has witnessed how IAF destroyed terror camps and later Pakistan's airbases. The IAF gave the proof that India's war policy and technology have changed." "They conveyed the message of New India that we are not just dependent on weapons and platforms imported from aboard, but Made in India equipment have become a part of our military power. The weapons manufactured in India are also impenetrable," he said.

Singh noted that it is a emerging and evolving situation, declining to get into the details of the continuing Indian operation.
Kharge said, "The defence minister said this is a sensitive time and in the interest of the country, detailed questions are not to be asked as they pertain to defence secrets." The Congress chief, though, conveyed his disappointment over Prime Minister Narendra Modi not attending the all-party meeting.
A number of opposition leaders, the sources said, referred to the Pakistani claim of downing Indian fighter jets and wondered if the government needed to counter such propaganda.
Gandhi and John Brittas of the CPI(M) suggested that a special session of Parliament should be convened, saying it would send out a message of united national resolve.

"Across party lines, political leaders said there is no place for politics in such critical times. The leaders shared their concerns on the issue of national security and the safety of all Indians, especially in border areas, but extended their support, Rijiju said. He quoted Singh as having said, "We do not do politics just for forming governments but also to build the nation." Leaders from all political parties, including the Congress, AIMIM, Trinamool Congress (TMC), DMK, BJD and Janata Dal (United), extended full cooperation to the government on the issue of national security.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said he complimented the armed forces and the government for conducting Operation Sindoor.
"I also said that we should run an international campaign against The Resistance Front (a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy) and the UN Security Council should designate it as a terror organisation. We also need to ask the United States to designate the TRF as a foreign terrorist organisation," he said.
The sources said Owaisi also raised the issue of online abuse aimed at Himanshi Narwal, wife of naval officer Vinay Narwal, who was one of the 26 people killed by terrorists in Pahalgam on April 22. Some opposition leaders called for taking all measures to ensure communal harmony.
BJD leader Sasmit Patra said his party "wholeheartedly commends the extraordinary courage, clinical precision and gallant professionalism of our armed forces in carrying out Operation Sindoor. We salute every officer, soldier, unit involved in this mission".
"We are united against the fight on terrorism from Pakistan. This is the need of the hour. We should fight shoulder to shoulder. There should be no division between us," TMC leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay said.

His comments followed a high-level security meeting he chaired in the wake of the attack. The meeting, which spanned almost two and a half hours, included National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, along with the heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead.
Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, three service chiefs, defence secretary and Army's Director General of Military Operations were present in the meeting, sources said.
It is learnt that Singh directed the armed forces to enhance their combat readiness and increase intensity of anti-terror operations.
Terrorists struck at a prime tourist location in Pahalgam in south Kashmir on Tuesday, killing at least 26 people, mostly tourists, and injuring several others, according to officials.
The deceased included two foreigners -- from the UAE and Nepal -- and two locals, they said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his trip to Saudi Arabia to return on Wednesday morning, while Home Minister Amit Shah rushed to Srinagar on Tuesday evening to spearhead the security measures.

A substantial portion, Rs 1.80 lakh crore, or 26.43% of the total budget, is earmarked for Capital Outlay on Defence Services. Additionally, Rs 3.11 lakh crore is allocated for operational and sustenance expenses, including the pay and allowances of Armed Forces personnel, with Defence Pension receiving Rs 1.61 lakh crore. The Ministry of Defence has declared 2025-26 as the 'Year of Reforms,' focusing on simplifying the Defence Procurement Procedure to maximize the use of these funds.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his appreciation for Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman&rsquo;s budget, emphasizing its focus on youth, farmers, women, and the middle class. &ldquo;This budget will promote the development of youth, poor, farmers, women and all other sections of society. Recognising the contribution of the middle class, the budget has brought an unprecedented gift,&rdquo; he said.

In light of evolving global security dynamics, Rs 1.80 lakh crore has been dedicated to Capital Outlay, which includes Rs 1.49 lakh crore for modernisation through capital acquisitions and Rs 31,277 crore for research and development. This year&rsquo;s allocation represents a 4.65% increase compared to last year&rsquo;s estimate, with 75% of this funding earmarked for domestic procurement. This strategy is part of the government&rsquo;s initiative to strengthen self-reliance in the defence sector by sourcing major acquisitions from Indian industries, particularly from the private sector.
<h3>Investment in Emerging Defence Technologies</h3>
Furthermore, the Indian Armed Forces are set to receive cutting-edge technology and resources for new defense domains, including Cyber and Space, along with emerging technologies such as AI, Machine Learning, and Robotics. Planned acquisitions, including high-altitude remotely piloted aircraft, next-generation submarines, and new aircraft, will be funded through this allocation.
<h3>Operational and Sustenance Budget for Armed Forces</h3>
On the operational side, Rs 3.11 lakh crore is allocated for sustaining the Armed Forces, with a significant portion directed towards essential supplies like fuel, ordnance stores, and maintenance. The government's focus on operational readiness is evident in the 24.25% increase in funding for FY 2025-26.
<h3>Increased Funding for DRDO</h3>
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) also received an enhanced allocation of Rs 26,817 crore, a 12.41% increase from the previous year. This increase will support the development of new technologies, with a special focus on collaborations with private entities.
<h3>Strengthening Innovation Through iDEX Scheme</h3>
The government is also bolstering the startup ecosystem through an increase in the iDEX scheme's budget, facilitating innovation in defense technology. An allocation of Rs 450 crore will fund defense innovation projects under iDEX and its sub-scheme ADITI.
<h3>Enhanced Care for Veterans via ECHS and Defence Pension</h3>
Veteran care remains a priority, with Rs 8,317 crore set aside for the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), marking a 19.38% increase from the previous year&rsquo;s allocation. Similarly, a Rs 1.61 lakh crore allocation for Defence Pension ensures the well-being of retired service members and their families.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will also benefit from a robust allocation of Rs 9,677 crore, a 26.50% increase from last year. This funding will enhance ICG's capabilities, providing advanced equipment and support for coastal security operations.

Finally, to improve border infrastructure, Rs 7,147 crore will be allocated to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for the construction of critical roads and infrastructure in strategic areas, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Rajasthan. This initiative not only strengthens national security but also promotes regional development, creating job opportunities and fostering tourism.
