The BJP minister had declared assets worth Rs 28 crore. But the complaint alleges that Chandrasekhar's net worth is around Rs 8,000 crore, indicating that he is a billionaire.

A complaint was filed against BJP's Thiruvananthapuram candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar, claiming that the union minister allegedly submitted a false affidavit in his Lok Sabha election nomination papers.
The BJP minister had declared assets worth Rs 28 crore. But the complaint alleges that Chandrasekhar's net worth is around Rs 8,000 crore, indicating that he is a billionaire.
The matter was raised to the Election Commission by a voter from Bengaluru, where Chandrasekhar represented in Rajya Sabha.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I am voter in BTM Layout Assembly Constituency, Bengaluru, Karnataka where Rajeev was contesting for Rajya Sabha. I have filed multiple petitions in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court with Election Commission with regard to the false affidavit filed by Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar in 2018 Rajya Sabha Elections. However, the petition is still stuck with Election Commission despite multiple follow ups (sic),&rdquo; complainant Renjith Thomas wrote.
&ldquo;Upon careful examination of Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar's affidavit submitted for the election nominations, it has become apparent that numerous discrepancies exist between the declared assets and his actual wealth. I possess documentary evidence...,&rdquo; the complainant added sharing details, and accusing him of being &ldquo;habitual offender&rdquo;
Chandrasekhar, who is fighting against Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and sitting MP Shashi Tharoor, and CPI veteran Pannian Raveendran in the April 26 polls, submitted his nomination papers before the returning officer on Thursday.
As per the affidavit filed along with the nomination paper, the total value of his movable assets stands at Rs 13,69,18,637, while his spouse possesses assets valued at Rs 12,47,00,408. These include cash in hand, details of deposits in banks, non-banking financial companies, and cooperative societies, as well as investments in bonds, debentures, shares, units in companies/mutual funds, and other financial instruments.
His movable assets also comprise a 1942 model Red Indian Scout, registered in Karnataka and purchased in 1994 for Rs 10,000, along with jewellery, bullion, and other valuable items valued at over Rs 3.25 crore.
The BJP leader&rsquo;s immovable assets include self-acquired property purchased at a price of Rs 5,26,42,640, with an approximate current market value of Rs 14,40,00,000.
He has liabilities of Rs 19,41,92,894 that are under dispute, while his spouse&rsquo;s liabilities under the same category amount to Rs 1,63,43,972. These include loans from banks, financial institutions, and others.
Chandrasekhar&rsquo;s total income shown in the 2022-23 Income Tax return is Rs 5,59,200, while it was Rs 680 for the year 2021-22.&nbsp;

All eyes are expected to be on Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram during the Lok Sabha elections, as the BJP's Rajeev Chandrasekhar is all set to take on Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Kerala is expected to see one of the fiercest battles in the Lok Sabha elections, as the BJP has pitted Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar against Shashi Tharoor in Thiruvananthapuram, a seat held by the Congress veteran since 2009.
While this would be the first time that Chandrashekhar will be contesting the Lok Sabha election, Tharoor had earlier indicated that the 2024 polls would be his last. Chandrashekhar is currently an MP from the Rajya Sabha.
Though Congress is yet to release its candidate list, Tharoor is expected to fight the elections this year.
BJP's choice in deploying Chandrashekhar also indicates the party's expectation of making a mark in the southern state, where it has historically failed to capture people's votes.

A case has been registered against Union Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar for allegedly making statements that promote enmity between different groups, police said on Tuesday.
The Kerala police registered the FIR on its own in connection with the minister's recent statements on social media regarding the Kochi blasts and a Hamas leader's virtual address at an event organised by an Islamist group in the Malappuram district of the state recently.
A senior officer of Kochi city police said that an FIR under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) of the IPC and section 120 (o) (causing nuisance and violation of public order) of the Kerala Police Act has been registered against the minister.
After reports of the bomb blasts at a religious gathering of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kalamassery near came out on Sunday, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Chandrasekhar put up posts on social media platform X criticising Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan.

"Dirty shameless appeasement politics by a discredited CM (and HM) @pinarayivijayan besieged by corruption charges. Sitting in Delhi and protesting against Israel, when in Kerala open calls by Terrorist Hamas for Jihad is causing attacks and bomb blasts on innocent Christians," he had said.
Following this, a verbal duel took place on Monday between the CM and Chandrasekhar with the BJP leader calling Vijayan a "liar" and he in turn lashing out and terming the MoS "extremely venomous".
The CM also said that if anyone makes statements which are in violation of the law, irrespective of whether they are central or state ministers, cases would be registered against them.
The blasts were set off at a convention centre in Kalamassery near Kochi where a prayer meeting of the Jehovah's Witnesses -- a Christian religious group that originated in the US in the 19th century -- was held on Sunday.
A few hours after that, Martin, who claimed to be an estranged member of Jehovah's Witnesses, surrendered before police in Thrissur district of the state, saying that he carried out the multiple blasts.
Initially, one woman had died and 60 were injured, six of them critically, in the blasts.
Subsequently, one of the six critically wounded -- a 53-year-old woman -- succumbed to her injuries.
By Monday morning, the death toll rose to three with the death of a 12-year-old girl who had suffered 95 per cent burns in the incident.

&nbsp;Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar will meet representatives of start-ups this week to assess the impact of their exposure to Silicon Valley Bank which was deeply entrenched in the tech startup ecosystem.
According to various industry players and experts, most Indian software-as-a-services startups with a presence in the US and firms linked to incubator Y Combinator are among entities that will feel the heat of the Silicon Valley Bank collapse but the impact is likely to be short-term.

What are India's new VPN laws, and how do they affect the functioning of a VPN? And how exactly does the exit of these VPN companies affect Indians? Know all the answers in this video.

On June 28, the government delayed the enforcement of a new controversial VPN law by 3 months. The new directives will now come into force on September 25. However, many popular VPN providers have already shuttered their operations in India, saying that the new laws defy the very ethos of using a VPN. So, what are these new laws, and why are they so controversial? Actually, what is a VPN anyway? In this video, we&rsquo;ll answer all your questions.

<h2>What is a VPN?</h2>
A Virtual Private Network or VPN encrypts your data and makes your activity across the web how to track. To understand this, first let&rsquo;s understand how you connect to the internet.
When you type in a website name on your browser, it goes as a data packet to your Internet Service Provider, or ISP, who then sends it across to the correct destination, which is a specific website. This means that your ISP gets a plethora of information about your activity on the web, including the websites you visit, the specific web pages you browse and the time you spend there, your browsing and search history, or even the files you download or upload. Other parties can also track this information, including possible malicious hackers if you&rsquo;re using Public Wi-Fi.
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel for your data by first authenticating your client with a VPN server. The server then uses one of several encryption protocols to make sure that no one can monitor the information traveling between you and your online destination. So your ISP, or anyone trying to track you, loses the ability to monitor all your data.&nbsp;
A VPN also anonymises your location, and can be used to spoof location. So, sitting in India, you can use a VPN to make Netflix, for example, think that you&rsquo;re logging on from the US.
VPNs can be used for anonymous browsing by consumers, but are also used by office workers to access their company servers remotely, or by businesses to allow users in selected locations to access each other&rsquo;s networks securely, and safely share resources and information.

<h2>What are India&rsquo;s new VPN laws?</h2>
The Computer Emergency Response Team, or CERT-in, has issued a new directive for VPNs. The body, which falls under India&rsquo;s IT Ministry, announced VPN providers who operate in India will have to keep records of customer names, validated physical and IP addresses, usage patterns and other forms of personally identifiable information. They have to maintain these logs for five years or more. Those who don't comply could potentially face up to a year in prison.
Many have pointed out that this goes against the very point of using a VPN, which is to keep your online activity anonymous. The government argues that VPN providers, cloud providers, and data centre operators have an obligation to know who is using their infrastructure. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, said that &ldquo;if there is a detected cyber breach or cyber incident,&rdquo; then providers have to produce the usage logs.&nbsp;
He also said that if VPN providers do not want to comply with the new rules, they will have to pull out and cease operations in India. And many of them have done exactly that. Some of the biggest consumer VPN providers, including TunnelBear, NordVPN, SurfShark, ExpressVPN have removed their India-based servers.&nbsp;

In a statement, ExpressVPN criticised the law strongly, saying that the law is so &ldquo;overreaching and broad&rdquo; that it opens up a window for potential abuse, and that they believe &ldquo;the damage done by potential misuse of this kind of law far outweighs any benefit that lawmakers claim would come from it&rdquo;. They also said that they &ldquo;refuse to participate in the Indian government&rsquo;s attempts to limit internet freedom.&rdquo;
There also concerns about the security of these logs, which contain extremely sensitive personal information. A spokesperson from NordVPN argued that small and medium sized companies may not have the proper knowledge or means to ensure the security of this data. They also said that regulations like this were normally introduced by authoritarian governments in order to gain more control over their citizens, and if a democracy follows the same path, it may have an adverse effect on privacy and freedom of speech.

<h2>Will VPNs now stop working in India?</h2>
So, will VPNs now stop working in India? Well, it&rsquo;s not really clear. All of these service providers have removed or shut down their India exit nodes, which allowed users from abroad to access the internet as though they&rsquo;re in India. However, for now, Indian users can still access popular VPN services, which only use servers located outside of the country.&nbsp;
The IT Ministry has said that the new laws apply to any VPN provider which provides services to Indian users, even if their servers are physically located outside of the country. VPN companies see this differently. SurfShark, for example, told The Hindu that they believe by moving servers outside of the country, they are complying with all local laws. This is an evolving situation, and we are likely to get more clarity on this in the future.&nbsp;
