Virat Kohli's nearly two-decade long agonising wait to lay hands on an IPL Trophy with Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be up against Shreyas Iyer's resolve to make first-time winners out of the tenacious Punjab Kings when the 18th season finale of the world's biggest T20 league unfolds at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
The summit could witness a thousands of fans donning jersey No.18 to support Kohli, who is in an IPL final for a fourth time overall.
The sentiments of the fans would indeed run high given it will be Kohli's last appearance on the cricket field for a while, having recently retired from Test cricket and India's next ODI assignment a few months away.
Parting ways with issues that plagued their previous campaigns, RCB have been clinical all the way through, coming into the final with an eight-wicket hammering of Punjab in a one-sided Qualifier 1.
Kohli (614 runs) has gone about his business like every other year, piling up runs at the top and continuing to lay platforms but where it has made the difference for RCB is that there's a lot more substance to their batting beyond the superstar.
Kohli has not been the only one to carry the focus and attention this year, rather he has quietly gone about his business in fortifying for RCB.
Phil Salt is a perfect foil for the Indian superstar who goes all-out in his attack, while Mayank Agarwal, skipper Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma are the trusted lieutenants of that batting line-up.
Since he has missed RCB's last two games, it remains to be seen if Tim David is fit for this contest as he forms a vital death overs batting pair with another burly hitter in Romario Shepherd.
Like Kohli in their batting, the calm and composed Josh Hazlewood (21 wickets) has been at the helm of RCB's rise and the fourth highest wicket-taker and the Australian would want to add more to move up the ladder in one last game.
On their part, stung by that crushing defeat in their homeground at Mullanpur, Iyer's Kings showed no scars from that defeat as they knocked out five-time winners Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 to reach their first final after 11 years.
It's only fitting that PBKS and RCB, who finished at the top two positions respectively after a gruelling 70-match league round, have a crack at the trophy which has eluded them from the time the competition began.
Perennial finishers in the second half of the 10-team points table, Punjab Kings have staged a sensational turnaround with two dogged personalities in captain Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting at the helm.
For Iyer (603 runs), a second consecutive appearance in an IPL final after winning it last year with Kolkata Knight Riders speaks volumes about his capabilities as a leader who marshals his troops as good as any other in the format.
It is, therefore, not a surprise to see Iyer being the only cricketer in the 18-year history of the tournament to have led three different teams in IPL finals, with Delhi Capitals being the third.
Iyer's perseverance is not the only quality that stands out for the 30-year-old Punjab captain but also the fact that he remains as hungry to win this IPL as he was when he began the journey with the franchise a few months ago.
In Prabhsimran Singh, Josh Inglis, Priyansh Arya and Shashank Singh, Iyer has adequate support to hold his fort staunchly and even lead aggressive attacks on the opposition camp.
Punjab's bowling, without Marcus Jansen, did look a little depleted but having managed to keep a lid on Mumbai Indians' for the entirely of an innings on a batting-friendly wicket tells that there is more to it than what has been perceived.
Yuzvendra Chahal is still dealing with a hand injury and was not at his absolute best in the Qualifier 2 but Punjab would need him to fire against his former franchise.
While there are no predictions of rains impacting the contest, an additional hour to the playtime extending the duration to 120 minutes and having a reserve day in the final are the measures in place to ensure the contest is completed.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Rajat Patidar was not amused with the way his batters threw away their wickets in a heap when thing were cruise control, saying this was "not acceptable" following a six-wicket home loss to the Delhi Capitals on Thursday.
Spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam bowled with purpose while KL Rahul struck an unbeaten 93 as the DC juggernaut continued to roll menacingly, inflicting a morale-shattering defeat on RCB with 13 balls to spare.
"We have not batted well. Batters are in a good frame of mind, they have shown nice intent. 60 for one, and then 90 for four, that is not acceptable," said Patidar post match.
RCB's Phil Salt had pummelled the DC bowlers in powerplay overs, guiding the home side to 61/1 in only the fourth over before they slumped to 91/4 after which they lost momentum to score a below-par 163/7.
"We thought it would be a nice batting track. We were lacking in assessing the conditions and the situation," said Patidar, adding that Tim David (37) did his bit by accelerating the run-scoring.
But it came too late in the day.
"The way David accelerated at the end, it was really amazing. The powerplay, the way the (RCB) fast bowlers bowled, it was really special (reducing DC to 30/3)," he added.
Player of the Match KL Rahul said watching the ball keenly behind the stumps helped him when he came in to bat.
"It was a slightly tricky wicket but what helped me was being behind the stumps for 20 overs, watching how the wicket played. The ball sat in the wicket but it was consistent throughout, it was one-paced.
"I knew what my shots are, wanted to get off to a good start, and then assess it accordingly. It depends on the conditions and the ground and the dimensions. On a wicket like this, I knew what my pockets were. If I wanted to hit a big six, I knew what pockets to target, and 'keeping gave me a feeler for where other batters were dismissed and where they hit the sixes," added Rahul.
Rahul added that having played a lot of cricket in his formative years at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium helped him immensely.
"This is my ground, my home, (I) know this (ground) better than anyone else. Something I have always done with my preparation is that I always try to adapt to different wickets (even in practice). I experiment in practice, get out a couple of times but it gives me a fair idea of the areas I can target &mdash; where I can take singles, where I can hit sixes." DC skipper Axar Patel said four wins in four matches had given the team a huge boost in morale.
"Everyone is playing with confidence, it feels nice (to have won four out of four). We talk about match-ups and what is happening off the surface. I felt they like to face pacers, so tried to hold them back.
"Then the ball was spinning and bouncing, so thought of bowling spin in the powerplay," he said.
He lauded Rahul's efforts saying the charismatic 'keeper-batter had played a mature innings.
"It becomes a very easy job for me. I have been in that situation, being used as a floater in pressure situations. It is not easy (changing positions). Having a player like him is a very good thing. I played a bad shot today to get out, but he played a mature innings and finished it off. He has been carrying his Champions Trophy form."

In his first remarks as captain, Patidar highlighted his leadership style, stating, "I'm not very expressive, but it's important to back my players and stand with them, helping them feel relaxed and competitive. This group of leaders can also help me grow personally."
Patidar joined RCB in 2021 and has since played 27 IPL matches, amassing 799 runs with an average of 34.74. He's established himself as a formidable batter and showed his leadership potential by leading Madhya Pradesh to the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024, where he was also the second-highest run-getter.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) cricketer Rajat Patidar has undergone successful surgery to repair an injured Achilles heel that had been troubling him for a while and had ruled him out of the ongoing IPL.
The 29-year-old cricketer from Madhya Pradesh had suffered the injury prior to joining the RCB training camp ahead of the IPL season. He was subsequently sent to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation.
Patidar, who had smashed his maiden IPL century last year scoring an unbeaten 112 in the play-offs, averaged more than 55 in eight games.
He took to social media to inform about his surgery.
"Just wanted to give a quick update to all my supporters out there. I recently underwent surgery for an injury that has been troubling me for a while now, but I'm happy to say that it went well and I'm on the road to recovery! "I can't wait to get back out there on the field and do what I love the most. Back,soon!," he said.
The BCCI had said prior to Patidar's departure to the UK that it will bear the expenses of the cricketer's surgery and recovery.
