Actor-turned politician Raj Babbar is looking for a comeback in electoral politics with the battle for Gurgaon. The Congress candidate is pitted against incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Rao Inderjit Singh in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.
Babbar is a three-time Lok Sabha member, who has represented both the Samajwadi Party and the Congress in the House.
But, his first brush with politics was in the late 1980s, when he campaigned for former Prime Minister VP Singh-led Janata Dal in Allahabad.
Soon, he caught the attention of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, as he worked among riot victims post the Babri Masjid demolition.&nbsp;
The story goes that Netaji approached Babbar, invited the actor to return to his native Uttar Pradesh, and campaign for the newly formed Samajwadi Party. Babbar campaigned for almost a month in 1993 for the UP Assembly polls.
He was rewarded with an SP-backed Rajya Sabha seat the very next year, when he was elected unopposed to the upper house.
Babbar's debut Lok Sabha contest was in 1996, when he was pitted against BJP veteran, and later Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Lucknow. Babbar lost, of course.
But the Samajwadis fielded him, once again, in the 1999 general election. Babbar defeated three-time BJP MP Bhagwan Shankar Rawat in his hometown Agra, and retained the seat for a second term in 2004.
His dream run in the SP, however, did not last very long. Babbar was suspended over differences with general secretary Amar Singh, who he accused of promoting 'broker culture' within the party.
The actor-politician joined the Congress in 2008.&nbsp;
Babbar then managed an unexpected victory in Mulayam's backyard. He defeated the SP supremo's daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav in the Firozabad constituency by a margin of 85,000 votes. He thereby secured a third consecutive term in the Lok Sabha in 2009.
That was his last big win in electoral politics. He lost from Ghaziabad against General (Retired) VK Singh of the BJP in 2014. Babbar was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand two years later. But again, in 2019, he lost against BJP's Raj Kumar Chahar from Fatehpur Sikri.

Ever since Congress announced actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar's candidature from Haryana's Gurugram Lok Sabha constituency, the party has been targeted for fielding an 'outsider' on the seat. However, Babbar on Tuesday dismissed the notion that he is an outsider in Gurgaon, considering it a cosmopolitan city.&nbsp;
Speaking to news outlet Indian Express, Babbar stated, "Gurgaon has been developed by outsiders. Moreover, individuals contesting elections in various cities are not necessarily from those cities, rendering this argument irrelevant. We are all Indians. They rely on these arguments as their strategies have proven ineffective over the years and fail to resonate with the people." Babbar's remarks came while campaigning in Haryana's Mewat and Nuh.&nbsp;

Babbar, a former parliamentarian has contested Lok Sabha Polls from different constituencies in the past, however this time, the grand old party pitted him against incumbent MP, BJP's Rao Inderjit Singh, a five-time parliamentarian, of which he has served as Gurgaon MP on three occasions (2009-till present).&nbsp;

The actor-turned-politician is set to face a political battle against Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party nominee for the seat and an incumbent MP.
Babbar was accompanied by Former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda during the nomination filing.&nbsp;

After the 2009 polls, Congress was wiped out of Gurgaon but what came as a surprise is that for the first time, Congress has fielded a non-Yadav candidate from the crucial seat.&nbsp;
The departure of the traditional selection process marks a shift in the Congress strategy for the constituency. It is worth noting that Gurgaon enjoys a diverse voter base with 2,546,916 voters, of whom 1,347,521 are male, 1,199,317 are female and 78 are transgenders. Moreover, Gurgaon has around 300,000 Punjabi voters, a community that Babbar belongs to.
However, Congress' move to field Raj Babbar was applauded by BJP. The Bharatiya Janata Party said that Babbar is an outsider in Gurgaon and because of this, BJP will yield good results.&nbsp;
Babbar will contest against BJP veteran and Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh, who won this seat in 2014, 2019 and is seeking a third term from Gurgaon constituency.&nbsp;
Whereas, Raj Babbar has served as Lok Sabha thrice and Rajya Sabha member twice. In 2009 Lok Sabha by-polls, he even won against Dimple Yadav from Firozabad Lok Sabha seat by a huge margin.
