Former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan has highlighted the divergent economic landscapes within India, citing pockets of excellence akin to "first-world" standards coexisting alongside areas struggling below the benchmarks of even third-world countries. Rajan's comments came during a conversation on YouTuber Akash Banerjee&rsquo;s 'The Deshbhakt' channel podcast.
Singling out regions like Noida and Gurgaon, Rajan emphasized that certain segments of the Indian economy are thriving at levels analogous to developed nations. However, he also underscored the grim reality that several parts of India lag significantly behind, worse off than even some regions in sub-Saharan Africa.
Addressing the nation's economic trajectory, Rajan delved into the ambition set forth by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, who anticipates India evolving into a $5 trillion economy in the near future and advancing as an economic powerhouse by 2047. Rajan expressed skepticism about achieving the desired growth rate, citing the country's current per capita income of around $2,500, trailing China by $3,000.
While acknowledging the gravity of challenges, Rajan urged a collective endeavor to bridge economic disparities, stressing the necessity of propelling every sector to a comparable echelon for national progress. He highlighted malnutrition as a crucial concern that demands immediate attention, urging a shift in perspective from shame to proactive resolution. He stressed the imperative need to address malnutrition as a fixable problem, advocating a mission-mode approach to reduce and eventually eliminate it within five years.
Highlighting regional disparities, Rajan noted that while some areas like Kerala showcase a 6% malnutrition rate, others in Bihar and Jharkhand grapple with rates exceeding 35%, emphasizing the vast socio-economic contrast prevalent in India.
Rajan concluded by advocating for learning from the best practices even within India and striving to elevate the nation to at least a moderate middle-income status by 2047, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to expedite economic progress and combat pressing issues like malnutrition.

Days after Raghuram Rajan's criticised India's PLI scheme for mobile phones, the former RBI governor is once again facing a lot of backlash about his comments on India becoming a superpower.&nbsp;&nbsp;
At an event, Rajan was asked whether he could see himself become the Finance Minister or Prime Minister of the country.
While answering, Rajan expressed his indifference towards India being a superpower.
He said it was more important to fulfil the vision of Mahatma Gandhi.
"I don't care about India being a superpower, to me that's not the point. It's about what the father of the nation wanted, which means making every Indian happy," he said.
This has led to sharp criticism of Rajan. Netizens said that his views were extreme and disregarded the contributions made by other leaders.
This is not the first time that Rajan's statements have led to his criticism.
Earlier, in a paper titled "Has India really become a mobile manufacturing giant?" Rajan had raised concerns about the Production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, accompanied by questions over India's rising mobile phone exports.

Rajasthan is the only Congress-ruled state where the yatra has entered and will cover about 500 km over 17 days before entering Haryana on December 21.
The yatra started from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7 and has so far covered the five southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, and then traversed through Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
It will conclude in Jammu and Kashmir in early February 2023, covering 3,570 km in 150 days.

According to him, the 'bright spots' are the health of large firms, the roaring business the IT and IT-enabled sectors are doing, including the emergence of unicorns in a number of areas, and the strength of some parts of the financial sector. 
On the other hand, 'dark stains' are the extent of unemployment and low buying power, especially amongst the lower middle-class, the financial stress small and medium-sized firms are experiencing, 'including the very tepid credit growth, and the tragic state of schooling', the noted economist added. 
Rajan opined that Omicron is a setback, both medically and in terms of economic activity but cautioned the government on the possibility of a K-shaped economic recovery.
He said the govt needs to do more to prevent a K shaped recovery, as well as a possible lowering of our medium term growth potential. 
A K-shaped recovery occurs after an economic slowdown when some sectors resume growth faster and others lag behind.

Rajan said the government&rsquo;s strategy to conserve resources today for a possible future stimulus is 'self-defeating'. The government&nbsp;needs to be frightened out of their complacency and take meaningful action.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
The eminent&nbsp;economist&nbsp;stressed that the recent pick-up in sectors like auto is not an evidence of the much-awaited&nbsp;V-shaped recovery. "It reflects pent-up demand, which will fade as we go down to the true level of demand in the damaged, partially-functioning, economy," he noted.
