Putting an end to the uncertainty over its candidates in the last remaining fortresses in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress has announced its candidates for Amethi and Raebareli. While Rahul who lost Amethi in 2019, has switched to Raebareli, a seat held by his mother Sonia Gandhi till she moved to the Rajya Sabha, Gandhi loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma has been pitted against Smriti Irani.
After losing Amethi to Smriti Irani in 2019, Rahul Gandhi seems to have turned gun shy. A second defeat to Irani could severely hurt his political stature, even within the Congress party.&nbsp;
By fielding loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma, who has been working on the ground in Amethi since 1983, Congress would put up a strong fight against Irani, without the Gandhis losing face.
Reports also suggest, Rahul was reluctant to give up the Wayanad seat. But with Priyanka bowing out of the race to focus on the party, her brother had to step up.&nbsp;
According to The Indian Express, Congress convinced Rahul to fight from Raebareli, given the Gandhis not contesting from the Hindi heartland would send a bad political message.&nbsp;
If Rahul were to win from both seats, he's likely to give up Wayanad, citing the family&rsquo;s long connection with Raebareli, and his mother's winning streak.&nbsp;

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday accused the BJP of meting out "step-motherly" treatment to Raebareli and urged people to vote for her party candidates in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.
Sonia Gandhi addressed the Raebareli voters virtually on the last day of the poll campaign for fourth phase. She is an MP from Raebareli which goes to polls on February 23.
Gandhi also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying the BJP government has done nothing except divide the people.
"It's going to be an important election because for the last five years you have seen a government which did nothing except divide people," During lockdown, your business was closed. You suffered the pain of walking for miles. But Modi-Yogi govt acted irresponsibly & turned their faces away from you and closed their eyes, despite your pain. Govt didn't provide you with any relief," Sonia Gandhi said in her appeal to the voters.
Adding that these polls are important, Sonia said: "For 5 years you saw a govt that did nothing except create differences among you. Farmers grow crops with a lot of hard work. You neither got paid nor received fertilisers, not even irrigation facilities".
Slamming the Central and state BJP governments on the issue of jobs, Sonia Gandhi said: "Youth study & prepare for jobs but BJP govt made you sit at home. 12 lakh govt jobs vacant but you've not been given jobs. Prices of petrol, diesel, LPG, mustard oil are skyrocketing, it has become difficult for people to run their household".
