Historic Royal Palaces (HRP), the charity that manages Britain&rsquo;s palaces, said this week that the new Jewel House exhibition will explore the history of the Kohinoor &ndash; also known as Koh-i-Noor &ndash; through a combination of objects and visual projections.
The infamous diamond, which is set within the Crown of the mother of the late Queen Elizabeth II, remains within the Tower after Camilla &ndash; in a diplomatic move &ndash; chose not to use this traditional crown for her coronation with King Charles II on May 6.
Kohinoor, which means mountain of light in Persian, came into Queen Victoria&rsquo;s possession from the treasury of Maharaja Ranjit Singh a few years before she was to be crowned empress of India and has played a starring role in British coronations of the past.
The new exhibition will open just weeks after the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, who will be crowned with the Queen Mary Crown.

Britain&rsquo;s Queen Consort, Camilla, has chosen a crown without the controversial colonial-era Kohinoor diamond claimed by India for her Coronation ceremony with husband King Charles III on May 6, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The palace on Tuesday said that the Queen Mary Crown has been removed from display at the Tower of London to be repurposed for the ceremony on May 6 with jewels paying tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
While the current version of Queen Mary&rsquo;s crown has a front cross set with a detachable rock crystal replica of the Kohinoor diamond, it isn&rsquo;t known yet if that would be retained after the changes are made for the Coronation.
Weighing in at 105.6 carats, the Kohinoor is one of the world&rsquo;s largest cut diamonds and a staple of the Royal Family&rsquo;s jewel collection since it was presented to Queen Victoria in 1850, the Sky news reported.
The Kohinoor diamond was most recently worn by the Queen Mother but has been on public display since her death in 2002.
&ldquo;The choice of Queen Mary&rsquo;s Crown by Her Majesty is the first time in recent history that an existing crown will be used for the Coronation of a Consort instead of a new commission being made, in the interests of sustainability and efficiency,&rdquo; Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
&ldquo;In tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Crown will be reset with the Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds. The diamonds were part of Queen Elizabeth II&rsquo;s personal jewellery collection for many years and were often worn by Her late Majesty as brooches,&rdquo; the Royal Family wrote on Instagram.
There had been much speculation over the crown to be chosen by Camilla, with reports suggesting that the one worn by Charles' grandmother, the Queen Mother, which bears the Kohinoor was a likely choice. However, it is believed that diplomatic sensitivity may have been considered in the final choice, even though the Queen Mary Crown also has a history of once being adorned with the controversial diamond.
King Charles III will wear the St Edward's Crown, regarded as the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels. It is back on display at the Tower of London after being modified to fit the monarch, BBC reported.
It was first made for King Charles II in 1661 as a replacement for an earlier crown which was destroyed in the aftermath of the English Civil War.
The late Queen Elizabeth II also used the St Edward's Crown during her coronation but other monarchs through history have opted for smaller or custom-made crowns.

The royal couple are in Yorkshire for a number of engagements including unveiling a statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II, the first to be installed since her death in September.
The visit is part of a traditional ceremony in which the UK monarch is officially welcomed to York by the city's Lord Mayor and was last carried out by the Queen in 2012.&nbsp;

The 73-year-old monarch, who acceded to the throne on the passing of his mother Queen Elizabeth II last month, will be officially bestowed with his crown and royal paraphernalia at the coronation ceremony to be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The palace said the King will be crowned alongside his wife, Queen Consort Camilla.
&ldquo;The coronation will reflect the monarch&rsquo;s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry,&rdquo; the palace said.
During the coronation ceremony, the sovereign is &ldquo;anointed, blessed and consecrated&rdquo; by the Archbishop of Canterbury. After receiving the orb and sceptres, the Archbishop places St Edward's Crown on the Sovereign's head.
Traditionally, the coronation is a solemn religious service, together with an occasion for celebration and pageantry. The ceremony has retained a similar structure for over a thousand years, and next year&rsquo;s coronation is expected to include the same core elements while recognising the spirit of our times.
For the last 900 years, the ceremony has taken place at Westminster Abbey &ndash; also the site of the Queen&rsquo;s state funeral. Since 1066, the coronation service has almost always been conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The coronation of the new sovereign traditionally takes place some months after accession to the throne, following a period of national and royal mourning as well as allowing time for the preparation required to organise the ceremony.
It is expected that King Charles will sign a proclamation formally declaring the date of the coronation at a meeting of the Privy Council of senior advisers later this year.
According to reports, Charles is expected to opt for a scaled down version of the grand ceremony, with fewer costume changes and a shorter service.
The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953 was attended by representatives of the Houses of Parliament, Church and State. Prime ministers and leading citizens from the Commonwealth and representatives of other countries also attended.
During the ceremony, the sovereign takes the coronation oath, the form and wording of which have varied over the centuries. The late Queen undertook to rule according to law, to exercise justice with mercy and to maintain the Church of England.
