Preparations for Lord Jagannath's Bahuda Yatra are underway in Puri after the Hera Panchami rituals, with chariots set to turn for the return journey on July 5. Devotees continue to have smooth darshan of the deities at Shree Gundicha Temple.

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) with the help of Puri district administration and police on Wednesday started preparations for the 'Bahuda Yatra' (return car festival) of Lord Jagannath a day after the completion of 'Hera Panchami' rituals, an official said.
The devotees are having a smooth 'darshan' of the sibling deities - Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath - at Shree Gundicha Temple for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, the SJTA official said.
Preparations are on to turn the chariots southwards (Dakhina Moda) for the 'Bahuda Yatra' on July 5, he said.
The three majestic chariots - Taladwaj (Lord Balabhadra), Darpadalan (Devi Subhadra) and Nandighosh (Lord Jagannath) are now parked at 'Saradhabali' (the sacred sand bed) in front of Shree Gundicha Temple, considered as the birthplace of the deities. They will be turned around for the return car festival, the official said.
He said that on-duty police personnel and a handful of servitors will drag the chariot and keep them at the proper place before they are pulled to the 12th-century shrine during Bahuda Yatra on July 5. "Today, after the 'Sakaladhupa' (morning food) ritual, the chariot will be pulled after the 'Agyanmala' (permission garland) come from the deities the chariots would take 'Dakhina Moda'. Three 'Agnya Mala' (garlands) have meanwhile reached the chariots. It gives me immense satisfaction to be part of the Rath Yatra rituals," said Madhav Pujapanda, who carried the 'Agnya Mala' from Shree Gundicha Temple to chariots.
In the series, first, the Devadalan chariot of Devi Subhadra will be pulled, followed by the Taladhwaja chariot of Lord Balabhadra and finally the Nandighosh chariot of Jagannath to reach in front of the 'Nakachana Dwara' for forward pulling on July 5th.
According to mythology, the three-day 'Rasalila' (fun game) will begin at Shree Gundicha Temple on Wednesday. Lord Jagannath would perform 'Rasalila' with 'Gopis' (women followers of Lord Krishna).
Meanwhile, the Hera Panchami ritual was observed on Tuesday night when Lord Jagannath's consort Maa Laxmi reached Shree Gundicha Temple in anger and humiliation for not being taken on Rath Yatra. Maa Laxmi was angry because Lord Jagannath took his brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra in Rath Yatra and not her.
In anger, Maa Laxmi broke a portion of Nandighosh chariot of Lord Jagannath as per the ritual and returned to the main temple in a ceremonial procession.

The three chariots are now ready to roll down the Grand Road here as Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath have ascended their respective chariots after over two-hour long ceremonial 'Pahandi' ritual here on Friday.
The word 'Pahandi' comes from the Sanskrit word 'Padamundanam' which means taking slow steps movement by spreading feet. As per tradition, the 'Pahandi' was carried in 'Dhadi' (line) where the three wooden idols were carried to the chariots from the 12th century temple. The pahandi of the trinity began with Chakraraj Sudarshan, followed by Lord Balabhdra, Devi Subhadra and finally Lord Jagannath.
Though the Pahandi ritual was earlier scheduled to begin at 9.30 am, it started one hour late and the ritual was completed as per plan. The trinity was now seated on their respective chariots parked in front of the Lion's Gate of the temple for journey to Shree Gundicha Temple, about 2.6 kilometre from the 12th-century shrine.
With the beating of gongs, and blowing of conches and cymbals, Chakraraj Sudarshan was first to be carried out from the main temple and seated at the 'Darpadalan' chariot of Devi Subhadra. Shree Sudarshan is the wheel weapon of Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped in the form of Lord Jagannath in Puri, said Pandit Suryanaray Rathsharma.
Shree Sudarshan was followed by Lord Balabhadra, the elder brother of Lord Jagannath. Lord Balabhadra is seated on his 'Taladhwaja' chariot. Goddess Subhadra, the sister of Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra, was being brought to her 'Darpadalan' chariot in a special procession called 'Sunya Pahandi' (the Goddess looking at the sky while being carried to the chariot) by servitors.
When finally Lord Jagannath came out of the temple, emotions spilled over the Grand Road as devotees raised their hands shouting 'Jai Jagannath'. Odissi dancers, folk artists, music players and many other groups drawn from different parts of the state compete among themselves to perform before the 'Kalia Thakura' (Black colour Lord Jagannath).
"My life will be fulfilled if the Lord graced to throw a look at me," said Maitree Maheswari, an Odissi dancer.
The Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati along with his selected disciples visited three chariots after the deities ascended on them. The 81-year-old seer came near the chariots in a wheel chair. The Shankaracharya's visit is also part of the Rath Yatra rituals.
Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Puri MP Sambit Patra, Odisha ministers and many others witnessed the ceremonial Pahandi, one of the major attraction of Rath Yatra here in Puri.
Ratha Yatra, is held on the second day of the Odia month of 'Ashadha Shukla Tithi' (bright fortnight) every year, is the only occasion when the sibling deities come out of the temple after descending from the 'Ratna Sinhasana', the bejewelled throne, through 22 steps known as 'Baisi Pahacha' through the Lion's Gate in an elaborate royal ritual called 'Pahandi'.
As per the tradition 'Chhera pahanra' (sweeping of chariots) would be performed by Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb at 3.30 pm before pulling of chariots at 4 pm as per the programme.
Meanwhile, lakhs of devotees have already thronged the pilgrim town of Puri to witness the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and his siblings on Friday.
The festival is being held amid unprecedented security arrangements with deployment of around 10,000 personnel of Odisha police, central armed police force, NSG and others. "We have made all possible arrangements for smooth conduct of Rath Yatra," DGP Y B Khurania told reporters, adding that over 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras are keeping watch on the crowd.
ADGP (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar said that the arrangements are made keeping in view some information following the Pahalgam terror attack. Apart from Odisha police, eight companies of central armed police force including 3 teams of RAF, have been deployed.
"Several central government agencies are collaborating with Odisha Police, including NSG snipers, Coast Guard drones, and anti-drone systems. Canine teams and Odisha's anti-sabotage units are also engaged in duty here," he said.&nbsp;

Lakhs of devotees have thronged the seaside pilgrim town of Puri for Lord Jagannath's annual Ratha Yatra on Friday, for which the Odisha government has made elaborate arrangements, officials said.
About one lakh people have reached Puri by Thursday evening, and the number has increased manifold this morning, police sources said.
Lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad are expected to participate in the event, they said.
&ldquo;By the grace of Mahaprabhu (Lord Jagannath), we are fully prepared to conduct a smooth Rath Yatra on Friday. We are getting complete support and cooperation from the servitors. All arrangements are in place to make the mega event successful,&rdquo; Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee said.
The town is heavily fortified with the deployment of approximately 10,000 security personnel, including eight companies of Central Armed Police Forces.
Odisha DGP Y B Khurania said that for the first time, an Integrated Command and Control Centre has been opened in Puri to monitor the entire festival from close quarters.
Over 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras have been installed across Puri and on the roads to Konark, 35 km away and famous for the 13th-century Sun Temple, for surveillance.
This apart, the DGP said that the National Security Guard (NSG) snipers will take positions on rooftops along Grand Road in front of the temple.&nbsp;

The East Coast Railway on Thursday said it has decided to add four coaches to the Vande Bharat Express between Howrah and Puri, owing to high demand for tickets by passengers.
The expansion of coaches from 16 to 20 will take effect from May 16, an official release said.
Four AC chair car coaches will be added, aimed at accommodating the growing number of passengers travelling on this semi-high-speed service, it said.
The decision was taken after a thorough review of passenger patronisation and travel demand, the release said.
The enhanced capacity is expected to improve travel convenience, reduce waitlists and further popularise the premium train service, it added.

The students were at the sea beach throughout the day, and had visited the 12th century shrine in the evening before preparing to return home. While climbing the 22 steps (Baisi Pahacha) to the temple around 8 pm, the girls were caught in a stampede-like situation and fainted, a temple office-bearer said.
There were a large number of visitors to the temple during the day.
The injured girls, students of classes 9 and 10, were later rescued and admitted to a local hospital. Their condition is stable, a treating doctor said.

Akash's phone and passport were confiscated, but he later secured bail as the offence was non-cognisable. The Puri temple administration had filed a complaint with police, and the YouTuber was summoned.
Akash had already left for Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, but returned to Puri on 28 November 2022 after the police summons.

India's coastal state of Odisha has been stunned after the body of an 18-year-old woman, dressed in only her underclothes, was found on a beach in Puri.
The body was discovered on 26 November 2022, three days after the woman reportedly went missing. Police said that the victim's face was blackened, possibly because of acid or other chemicals. Her fingers were also mutilated.
Police floated the alternate theory that this could also be due to exposure to saline water in the sea due to a long time, and marine creatures biting her fingers. The body was identified with the help of her earrings, gold nose pin, a red band in her hair, and a black band on her ankle.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that this year the Rath Yatra could only be held at Odisha's Puri Jagannath Temple and not at other places in the state. The decision comes amid concerns that mass gatherings could spark a third wave of Covid infections.
The top court was hearing a batch of petitions challenging the Odisha government's decision to cancel the Rath Yatra except for the Puri Jagannath Temple edition. The state said it would be impossible to control crowds and ensure Covid-appropriate behaviour at multiple locations.
The central government had also wanted Rath Yatras to be held at places in the state. Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said this could be done without upsetting health protocols.
However, the apex court bench dismissed all the petitions with the Chief Justice saying the government has taken the right decision.
