Punjab Assembly Elections 2022: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday appealed to the people of Punjab to give the party-led alliance a clear majority for peace and prosperity in the state which goes to the polls on Sunday.
Union Minister and the party&rsquo;s Punjab affairs in-charge, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said his party has come with a vision and agenda for the development of Punjab, unlike the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, which the saffron party claimed, are pursuing a divisive agenda. Shekhawat, along with the state BJP general secretary, Subhash Sharma, said, the BJP was fighting the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/elections/punjab-elections" target="_blank">Punjab elections</a> as a major partner for the first time while earlier it used to contest only 23 seats.
He appealed to the people to give the BJP-led alliance a clear majority for Punjab's peace and prosperity.

In an official statement, Shekhawat said the state of affairs in the Congress was so anarchic that it even forgot to release its manifesto till the last day "and it only released it when it was pointed out by the media". Punjab --- the land of five rivers.
The Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum define the geography.
But it's the three regions of the state, again carved out by the rivers, that define its politics.
All through the election season you will hear Malwa, Majha and Doaba. The three regions that make up Punjab politically. All the three regions have their distinct social, economic and political identity.
The Majha region of present-day Punjab falls between the Ravi and the Beas. Then begins Doaba, which literally means the land between two rivers. It starts from the Beas and goes on till the Sutlej. Beyond the Sutlej lies the Malwa region, the biggest of the three.
First let's take a closer look at Malwa region:
Malwa: The Political Monopoly
It's the largest region with 69 of Punjab's 117 Assembly seats.
All but two CMs of the state have been from this region.
Current CM Channi, former CMs Captain Amarinder Singh and Badal come from Malwa.
2017: Congress won 40 of 69 seats, AAP made an impressive debut winning 18 seats in the region. 
Akalis lost their traditional stronghold and could only win 8 seats in Malwa.
Aam Aadmi Party won all of its 4 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 from Malwa region.
Malwa was also the epicentre of the year-long farm agitation. According to a Punjab University study, around 80 per cent of the 700-odd farmers who died during the protests belonged to the Malwa region.
Glaring inequality in landholdings with big landlords holding hundreds of acres while majority make do with little landholdings.
Majha: Where Religion and Politics Mix
Majha region is nestled between Ravi and Beas rivers, on border with Pakistan.
Majha means ‘in the middle’, and it used to be the centre of undivided Punjab before Partition.
With 25 Assembly seats, Majha is the hotbed of "panthic" or religious politics in the state.
Home to Golden Temple in Amritsar and Kartarpur Corridor that connects to Darbar Sahib in Pakistan.
Region has traditionally been a stronghold of Akali Dal, but that changed in 2017
In 2017,  the Congress won 22 seats, and the SAD was marginalised to just 2.
AAP is yet to open its account in the region.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday declared Charanjit Singh Channi as his party's chief ministerial face for the high-stakes Punjab Assembly polls.
Gandhi made this announcement while addressing a virtual rally in Ludhiana. 
"People of Punjab said we need a CM from 'gareeb ghar' (poor family)," said Gandhi.
The other main contender for the party's CM face was Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, a Jat Sikh face.
The party had taken feedback from its leaders and workers, and had also sought the opinion of the public on who should be its chief ministerial candidate through an automated call system.
Gandhi also lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he is not the PM but a "king".

The Congress Sunday released its third list of eight candidates for the February 20 Punjab assembly polls, fielding Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi from Bhadaur and Chamkaur Sahib seats.

In its first list of 86 candidates, the Congress on Saturday gave the ticket to party MLA Gurpreet Singh GP from the Bassi Pathana seat.
Manohar Singh called Congress' decision an 'injustice' to the people of the constituency and alleged that the sitting legislator was 'incapable and ineffective.'
Manohar Singh told PTI that several prominent people of Bassi Pathana area have asked him to fight as an independent and he plans to honour their wishes.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi's brother Manohar Singh, who was eyeing a Congress ticket from Bassi Pathana assembly seat, on Sunday said he will contest as an independent from the constituency after the ruling party fielded its sitting legislator.

The Congress on Saturday released its first list of 86 candidates for the February 14 assembly elections in Punjab, fielding Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi from Chamkaur Sahib and PCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar East.
The party has also fielded Punjab deputy chief ministers -- Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa from Dera Baba Nanak and Om Prakash Soni from Amritsar Central, the seats they already represent.
Controversial Punjabi singer Sidhu Mussewala, who joined the Congress sometime ago will contest from Mansa and actor Sonu Sood's sister Malvika Sood from Moga.
Party's Rajya Sabha MP Pratap Singh Bajwa will contest from Qadian assembly seat in Gurdaspur, which is represented by Bajwa's brother Fatehjang Singh Bajwa.
The list was released after the party's central election committee chaired by party chief Sonia Gandhi cleared the names in its meeting held on Thursday.
The party has also adopted 'one family, one ticket' formula while distributing the party tickets.
Former PCC president and campaign committee chief Sunil Jakhar will not contest the assembly polls and his nephew Sandeep Jakhar will contest the Abohar assembly seat instead.
