The Punjab cabinet gave its nod on Saturday to the excise policy for 2024-25, which is aimed at garnering revenue to the tune of more than Rs 10,000 crore from the sale of liquor.
A decision to this effect was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.&nbsp;
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the cabinet has approved the new excise policy -- the third such policy of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
"For the first time, more than Rs 10,000 crore will be generated from it," Cheema said.
He said during the previous Congress regime, the revenue from liquor sale was merely Rs 6,151 crore.
The new excise policy envisages allotment of liquor vends through a draw of lots, the minister said, adding that instead of 172 groups, 232 groups have been formed this time.
"Liquor vends will be allotted through a draw of lots," he said.
In another decision, the cabinet also gave its approval for allowing colonisers to pay the pending external development charges (EDC) in three instalments in a year and a half, Cheema said.
The EDC is collected by development authorities from the promoters of projects in accordance with the rates notified by the government from time to time.
These charges are utilised by the authorities to provide new infrastructure and strengthen the existing infrastructure in the vicinity of these projects.

The Punjab Cabinet on Saturday gave its nod for setting up two special courts under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act in Tarn Taran and Sangrur districts.
In the meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Cabinet also gave its approval to the new excise policy which aims to mobilise more than Rs 10,000 crore of revenue in 2024-25.
Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the Cabinet gave approval for setting up two special courts under the POCSO Act.
"These courts will be set up in Tarn Taran and Sangrur districts," Cheema said, adding that the move will ensure speedy justice in matters related to crime against children.
Cheema informed that the Cabinet gave its nod to the new excise policy for 2024-25.
The state government will collect revenue to the tune of over Rs 10,000 crore because of this policy, he said.
"Liquor vends will be allotted through a draw of lots," he said.

The Cabinet has decided to fill 1,300 posts of doctors in government hospitals, he said.

"Ex-MLAs in Punjab, even if they have won twice, five times or ten times, they will now get pension for one term only," said Mann in a video message while adding that several MPs are also getting pension for remaining MLAs earlier.
The CM said money saved from it will be spent on the welfare of people.
"Our political leaders, including MLAs, seek votes from you with folded hands by saying that give us a chance to serve you," Mann said addressing people.
But you will be surprised to know that several MLAs who won thrice, four times or five times and then after losing the elections or after not getting tickets for contesting the polls, get lakhs of rupees in pension per month, Mann said.
"Somebody gets Rs 3.50 lakh and somebody gets Rs 4.50 lakh and somebody gets Rs 5.25 lakh as pension. It puts a financial burden of crores of rupees on the exchequer," Mann said.
A reduction will also be made in their family pensions as well, Mann stated.
Mann said he has given necessary directions to the officers concerned in this regard.
An MLA gets a pension of Rs 75,000 per month for one term. Thereafter, an additional 66 per cent of the pension amount is given for each subsequent term.
A few days ago, SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal, who is 11-time legislator, had said he will not accept pension as an ex-MLA.
The nonagenarian had asked the Punjab government and the Vidhan Sabha speaker to divert his pension to some social work, "preferably to help some needy girl students in their education".
