Aware of journalist Mattoo being prevented from travelling to US: State dept

The United States is aware of reports of Pulitzer-winning Kashmiri journalist Sanna Irshad Mattoo allegedly being prevented from travelling to the country, a State Department official has said.

State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters that the US is tracking the developments closely.

The United States is aware of reports of Pulitzer-winning Kashmiri journalist Sanna Irshad Mattoo allegedly being prevented from travelling to the country, a State Department official has said.
Mattoo had on Tuesday said she was stopped at the IGI Airport in Delhi from flying to the US to received the prestigious award.
&ldquo;We are aware of the reports of Ms Mattoo being prevented from travelling to the US and are tracking these developments closely,&rdquo; State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters at his daily news conference.
&ldquo;We are committed to supporting press freedom. And as the secretary has noted, a shared commitment to democratic values, including the respect for the independence of the press, is a bedrock of the US-India relationship,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;But I don't have any other specifics to offer&hellip; we are tracking this closely,&rdquo; Patel said in response to a question.
Mattoo, a freelance photojournalist, was part of a Reuters team that won the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography for their coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
In a statement, the Committee to Protect Journalists urged Indian officials to let Mattoo travel to the US to attend the Pulitzer awards ceremony.

&ldquo;There is no reason why Kashmiri journalist Sanna Irshad Mattoo, who had all the right travel documents and has won a Pulitzer&ndash;one of the most prestigious journalism awards&ndash;should have been prevented from traveling abroad,&rdquo; said Beh Lih Yi, CPJ&rsquo;s Asia programme coordinator, in Frankfurt, Germany.
&ldquo;This decision is arbitrary and excessive. Indian authorities must immediately cease all forms of harassment and intimidation against journalists covering the situation in Kashmir,&rdquo; Beh said.&nbsp;

Pulitzer-winning Kashmiri photojournalist Sanna Irshad Mattoo on Tuesday said she was stopped from flying to the United States by immigration authorities at the Delhi airport "despite having a valid visa and ticket".
The 28-year-old photojournalist, who was awarded the Pulitzer for the coverage of COVID pandemic for Reuters, was scheduled to fly to New York on Monday.
"I was on my way to receive the Pulitzer award (@Pulitzerprizes) in New York but I was stopped at immigration at Delhi airport and barred from travelling internationally despite holding a valid US visa and ticket," Mattoo tweeted on Tuesday.
She said this was the second time she has been stopped from travelling abroad in the past four months.
"This is the second time I have been stopped without reason or cause. Despite reaching out to several officials after what happened few months ago, I never received any response.
"Being able to attend the award ceremony was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me," she added.

"Whatever happened today was totally unexpected," she told PTI.
In a tweet, she said, "I was scheduled to travel from Delhi to Paris today for a book launch and photography exhibition as one of 10 award winners of the Serendipity Arles grant 2020. Despite procuring a French visa, I was stopped at the immigration desk at Delhi airport." "I was not given any reason but told I would not be able to travel internationally," she tweeted.
Mattoo alleged the immigration authorities did not give her any reason for stopping her from flying except saying that she could not travel abroad as there were restrictions.
Officials in the Jammu and Kashmir police confirmed that Mattoo had been placed on a no-fly list.
Sanna works as a photojournalist for Reuters and she won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in feature photography along with three of her colleagues, including slain journalist Danish Siddiqui, for their coverage of the Covid second wave in India.

Danish Siddiqui was killed in July last year while covering the Taliban's take over of Afghanistan. He was reportedly died in crossfiring during clashes between Taliban and Afghan forces. Some media reports later however claimed that he was murdered by the Taliban. 
Among the other Pulitzer Prize awards, the US pullout and resurrection of the Taliban's grip on Afghanistan permeated across categories, with The New York Times winning in the international reporting category for reporting challenging official accounts of civilian deaths from US airstrikes in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
