Widespread rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, prompting authorities to declare a holiday for schools in Chennai and many other districts.
Overnight rains lashed Chennai and the neighbouring Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, besides Villupuram and some areas in the Cauvery delta region.
Following sharp showers, authorities declared a day&rsquo;s holiday for schools in districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore.

Puducherry's lone woman legislator and minister, S Chandira Priyanga, on Tuesday, tendered her resignation from the AINRC-BJP coalition cabinet, alleging politics of conspiracy and money power, besides facing casteism and gender bias.&nbsp;
She said in her letter that although she entered the Assembly due to her popularity among the people in her constituency, she however realised it is not so easy to overcome "politics of conspiracy and I could not fight against the big ghost of money power".
She realised she "was subjected to casteism and gender bias." "I was also targeted continuously and found that I could not bear the politics of conspiracy and the big ghost of money power any longer beyond certain limits".
She was elected from the Neduncadu reserved constituency in Karaikal on an AINRC ticket for a successive term in the 2021 Assembly polls.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy, however, declined to comment on Priyanga's decision to resign.

The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday extended the lockdown in the state till July 19 easing out a few restrictions for the citizens.
Hotels, bakeries, roadside shops and snack shops can function with 50% of customers till 9pm. Intra-district as well as inter-district public transport will be permitted with 50% capacity with bus services resuming to Puducherry. Earlier, the DMK-led government had restricted bus services to stop in Puducherry due to increase in Covid-19 cases. The state government has also allowed conducting of examinations for employment for Tamil Nadu State and Central Government.
Schools, colleges, theatres, liquor bars, swimming pools and zoos continue to remain closed. A maximum of 50 people will be permitted to attend weddings while only 20 people will be allowed to attend funerals.

The opposition had targeted BJP for using the pandemic for political benefits. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that all people will be provided free of cost vaccines. An estimated Rs 500 odd will be spent on vaccination of each person", Sarangi told reporters.

PM Modi had in a televised address to the nation on October 20 said that Indian scientists are in the process of developing several vaccines that are at different stages of clinical trials and the results seem encouraging.
Sarangi, the union minister of state for animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries and micro, small and medium enterprises spoke in reply to question raised by Odisha Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister, R P Swain.
Swain had earlier in the day sought clarification from Dharmendra Pradhan and Sarangi, the two union ministers from Odisha questioning them for their silence on their party BJP's stand on free Covid-19 vaccination for the people of the state along the lines of the one being promised in Bihar.
The governments of Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Puduchchery have already announced free of cost Covid vaccines for the people of their states, while Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has demanded free vaccine for all citizens across the country.
