A report published by online news portal The Wire&nbsp;based on a leaked list revealed that Israel-made spyware&nbsp;Pegasus&nbsp;is believed to have targeted at least 40 Indian journalists.
The report said that the 'leaked data includes the numbers of top journalists at big media houses like the&nbsp;Hindustan Times,&nbsp;India Today, Network18,&nbsp;The Hindu&nbsp;and The Indian Express'.The leaked list of names was provided to&nbsp;The Wire&nbsp;and 15 other international news organisations by France-based media non-profit, Forbidden Stories, and Amnesty International, as part of a collaborative investigation called the Pegasus Project.The government, however in a statement, said that the report was not properly researched and was factually incorrect.&nbsp;The government said that India was a robust democracy and the right to privacy is a fundamental right.Pegasus, a product of Israeli cyberweapons company NSO Group, was earlier in the news in late 2019 when it was found that spies used the&nbsp;spyware&nbsp;to hack into phones of roughly 1,400 users around the world, including 121 Indians.

Decoding Cyber Sovereignty with Pukhraj Singh

The past few years have witnessed a change in the way countries attempt to govern the vast, deep and decentralized cyber space. In the midst of large-scale disinformation campaigns threatening the very existence of public institutions, this need to govern stems from very real issues. Yet, the way we choose to do it is as vital in order to maintain the social contract between our society and the State. Regulations without a profound understanding and examination of the workings and meaning behind the cyber realm could leave us in a dire position. With this in mind, in this interview, we speak to Pukhraj Singh to explore four key questions that are critical to both our virtual and physical existence in the backdrop of national sovereignty based cyber regulations. These are as follows:
1. What is cyber sovereignty? What are the different models that exist?
2. What is the relationship between cyber sovereignty &amp; the State?
3. What has India dealt with cyber sovereignty?
4. What is the role of data localization in cyber sovereignty?
