Four people have been booked for roughening up a priest who took extra laddus from a prayer tray at a Fatehpur temple, an official said on Wednesday.
An FIR was registered at the Khaga police station against Rammu Singh and his three sons Amit Singh, Lalit Singh and Ajay Singh, based on a complaint filed by the priest, Vikas Tiwari, on Tuesday.
According to Station House Officer Rajesh Kumar Singh, the incident happened at Bade Hanuman Mandir in Fatehpur on Sunday night. A heated argument broke out when the priest allegedly took a couple of extra laddus from the prayer tray offered by Rammu Singh and his sons. The situation quickly turned violent, when the four devotees attacked Tiwari. A video of the incident, captured by CCTV cameras in the temple, has gone viral.
"The accused also misbehaved with other devotees who attempted to intervene," the SHO said.
Fatehpur's Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against Rammu Singh and his sons. He said efforts are on to nab the accused, who have gone into hiding since the incident.
The case has been registered under Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 353 (public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

A mob of agitators led by the Latin Catholic church Sunday night attacked Vizhinjam police station in Thiruvananthapuram in a protest against the construction of Adani port, injuring at least 29 policemen and damaging police vehicles.
The mob targeted the police station using sticks and bricks, and attacked police officers after a person was arrested and a few others were taken into custody in connection with the violent protests on November 26.
"At least 29 policemen have been injured and admitted to various hospitals," a special branch police official told PTI.

Considering the sensitive situation prevailing in the area, the Kerala government has deployed more police officials from the other districts.
The agitators also attacked media persons who were present at the site. ACV local channel camera person, Sherif M John was attacked by the protesters, who damaged his camera and snatched his cellphone. He has been shifted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, the district administration has initiated a peace talk with the church authorities and its representative, Fr Eugene Perera said the church wants to maintain peace.
"We will speak to the protesters. I came here to resolve the matter in a peaceful manner," he told media.
Earlier in the day, the state police lodged an FIR against at least 15 Latin Catholic priests, including metropolitan Archbishop Thomas J Netto and Perera, over the violence at Vizhinjam on Saturday.
Television channels aired visuals of the vandalised Vizhinjam police station as well overturned vehicles, including a police van and jeeps.
Senior officials, including district collector, city police commissioner and sub-collector, have called a reconciliatory meeting with the protesters at Kovalam animation centre.
The church authorities and government officials are expected to talk to the media after the meeting.
Police have arranged tight security in the Vizhinjam region.

An 11-year-old boy was allegedly tied to a tree and beaten up by the priest of a Jain temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar after the child took almonds kept as offering, police said on Saturday.
Based on a complaint lodged by the boy's father, a case has been registered against Rakesh Jain, a priest at Jain Siddaytan Mandir in Kareela, Motinagar police station in-charge Satish Singh said.
A purported video showing the boy tied to a tree crying and asking to be freed surfaced on social media on Saturday.
According to the complainant, the boy was accused of stealing almonds when he was standing near the temple's gate on Thursday. He alleged that that the priest with the help of another man tied the child to the tree and beat him up.
A case has been registered against the accused priest under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the official said, adding that no arrest has been made so far.
