The voting for the new Indian President will be held on July 18 as the tenure of the current President Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24.

The post of India&rsquo;s president is the highest occupied position on the land.&nbsp;
As the tenure of the current P<a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/liberty-equality-and-fraternity-president-ramnath-kovind-s-farewell-address-1658681642794" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resident Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24</a>, the polling for the new Indian President will be held on July 18 and the result will be declared on July 21.&nbsp;
The process of electing the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/droupadi-murmu-is-india-s-next-president-1658414103394" target="_blank" rel="noopener">President in India</a> is different from other democracies, say for example the United States.&nbsp;
Before voting begins, the candidates have to file their nominations.&nbsp;
<h3>Who can file nominations?&nbsp;</h3>
A candidate has to be a citizen of India and must have completed 35 years of age.&nbsp; He/she must be eligible to be a member of the Lok Sabha.&nbsp; He/she must not hold "any office of profit under the government of India or the Government of any State or under any local or other authority subject to the control of any of the said Governments".&nbsp; However, the candidate may be holding the office of president or vice-president or governor of any state or ministers of the union or any state.&nbsp;
Article 54 of the Indian Constitution explains the provisions for the voters who can participate in the election of the President.&nbsp;
It states that the President of India can only be elected by the members of an electoral college, which includes the MPs of both Houses of the Parliament, and the elected members of Legislative Assemblies of all states, including the UTs of Delhi and Puducherry.&nbsp;
Now, the most complex part of the voting or perhaps the entire election process is the calculation of vote value.&nbsp;
Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative Assembly have different values assigned to them.&nbsp;
On one hand, the value of an MP&rsquo;s vote is fixed while on the other hand, the value of an MLA&rsquo;s vote differs according to the state the MLA comes from.&nbsp;
The value of an MP&rsquo;s vote is calculated by dividing the total value of votes of all the states and UTs by the total number of elected MPs. &nbsp;
Voters from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are 543 and 233, respectively, making it 776 voters from Parliament.&nbsp;
Since the total number of votes as per the ECI is 5,43,200 and the number of MPs is 776, the value of a vote for each MP is 700 (5,43,200/776).&nbsp;

Now, coming to the value of the vote of an MLA.&nbsp;
The MLA&rsquo;s vote value is dependent on the population of his/her state and the strength of that state&rsquo;s Legislative Assembly. &nbsp;
To ensure uniformity here, there is a formula that is used to determine the value: the population of the state is divided by 1,000 times the strength of its Legislative Assembly.&nbsp;
For example, if the value of vote of a Karnataka MLA is to be calculated, then it would be 29,299,014 (population of Karnataka) divided (224 i.e. the strength of Karnataka Assembly x 1000), which equals 130.7, rounding it off to 131. Hence, a Karnataka MLA&rsquo;s vote will have a value of 131. &nbsp;
<h3>Counting of votes and winner declaration&nbsp;</h3>
The total number of votes of a Presidential candidate is calculated by adding up the value of all the ballots in which the candidate receives a first preference.&nbsp;
The candidate who is declared the winner is not the person who gets the most number of votes, but the person who gets more votes than a certain quota.&nbsp;

Now, the quota is decided by adding up the votes polled for each candidate, dividing the sum by 2 and adding '1' to the quotient.&nbsp;
The candidate who polls more votes than the quota is the winner. &nbsp;
In a scenario where no one gets more votes than the figure, then candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated.&nbsp;
The eliminated candidate&rsquo;s ballot papers are then distributed among &nbsp;the remaining people based on the second preference choice. &nbsp;
The process of counting the total votes for each candidate is then repeated to see if anyone polls above the quota.&nbsp;
Still, if nobody polls above the quota, the same process is then repeated until someone's votes tally up more than the quota.&nbsp;
If just one candidate remains at last after repeated eliminations, then he or she is declared the President of India.

Yashwant Sinha&rsquo;s political career has come full circle, from being a fierce critic of the Congress party and the Left while being in the BJP for over two decades to being a presidential candidate with the support of those very parties.

Yashwant Sinha, the bureaucrat-turned-politician, has been named as the joint Opposition candidate for the President's post that goes to the polls on July 18.
While Sinha's candidature may have united the Opposition, the balance is tilting towards National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) Droupadi Murmu, especially in the backdrop of the recent political developments in Maharashtra.
The Opposition seems to bank on Sinha's 'veteranism' as an asset against the NDA nominee as it attempts to mount an ideological contest against the BJP.
Early life
Born in Patna on November 6, 1937, Sinha was the ninth of 11 siblings. At the age of 23, he joined the Bihar cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). During his 24-year-long stint in Administrative Services, he held multiple posts in the Finance and Commerce Departments. He was First Secretary (Commercial) in the Indian Embassy in Bonn, Germany in the early 1970s.&nbsp;
Political journey
In 1984, Sinha quit his service and joined active politics as a Janata Party member. Two years later, he was appointed the party's all-India general secretary and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1988. In 1989, Sinha co-founded the Janata Dal and took charge as the party&rsquo;s general secretary. He later joined the BJP and held important portfolios in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government but finance was known to be his forte.&nbsp;
In 2015, the senior politician received Officier de la Legion d'Honneur, the French government's highest civilian award.
An ardent critic of Narendra Modi and his government's policies, Sinha quit the BJP on April 21, 2018.&nbsp;
In 2021, he joined the Trinamool Congress as its vice president and quit last month to contest the presidential election.
Legacy as FM
Sinha was known as the &lsquo;rollback finance minister&rsquo; for rolling back fuel price hikes. His 1998-99 Union Budget was the first to have been presented in the morning, breaking the colonial-era tradition of presenting Union Budgets in the evenings. He is also credited with expanding the highway network across the country and undertaking the Golden Quadrilateral project - the largest highway project in India and the fifth-longest in the world. He made this possible by increasing the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) funds through a petroleum cess. He also de-regularised the petroleum industry.
No love lost between Sinha &amp; BJP
In 2018, Sinha quit the saffron party alleging that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was undermining democratic institutions and declared that he would be severing all ties with the BJP and announced his retirement from active politics.
Since then Sinha has been a vocal critic of the Modi government and its policies such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the years to follow, &nbsp;Sinha launched a 3,000 km Gandhi Peace March demanding the withdrawal of the CAA. Along with fellow BJP critics &ndash; former Union minister Arun Shourie and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan &ndash; Sinha filed a joint petition in the Supreme Court seeking a review of its clean chit to the Modi government in the Rafale case. The apex court, however, dismissed all the review petitions.

Premadasa contested the presidential elections in 2019 as a United National Party (UNP) candidate but lost to Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Sri Lanka&rsquo;s Leader of Opposition and the top contender for the post of President Sajith Premadasa on Tuesday announced the withdrawal of his candidacy from the race to support rival candidate Dullas Alahapperuma.
Elections for the President&rsquo;s office in the crisis-ridden island nation are scheduled to be held on July 20 after the post fell vacant following Gotabaya Rajapaksa&rsquo;s resignation last week.
Premadasa tweeted, &ldquo;For the greater good of my country that I love and the people I cherish I hereby withdraw my candidacy for the position of President. SJB and our alliance and our opposition partners will work hard towards making @DullasOfficial victorious.&rdquo;
Premadasa contested the presidential elections in 2019 as a United National Party (UNP) candidate but lost to Gotabaya. He then went on to form the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, a political alliance led by him, to contest the 2020 parliamentary election.
As a leader, he is quite popular among Tamils and Muslims in Sri Lanka.
Dullas Alahapperuma, a journalist-turned-politician, whom Premadasa and his SJB are now backing, is from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). He was a Cabinet minister in the previous Rajapaksa government.
Earlier, the SLPP had officially announced its backing of interim President Ranil Wickremesinghe but was met with internal resistance. The party&rsquo;s chair GL Peiris had reportedly said the party must back Alahapperuma, the breakaway SLPP candidate who has already put himself forward to the vote.&nbsp;

The BJP-led NDA's nominee Droupadi Murmu on Friday filed her nomination papers for the July 18 presidential election, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi handing over the set of papers to Returning Officer P C Mody.
Murmu was also accompanied by union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal, BJP president J P Nadda and several chief ministers including Yogi Adityanath, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Manohar Lal Khattar, B S Bommai, Bhupendra Patel, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Pramod Sawant and N Biren Singh.
Besides the NDA leaders, YSR Congress' V Vijaysai Reddy and BJD leader Sasmit Patra, who are not part of the alliance, were also in Parliament to back her nomination.
AIADMK leader O Paneerselvam and M Thambidurai, JD-U's Rajiv Ranjan Singh also reached Parliament early.
Every set of nomination has to have 50 proposers and 50 seconders among elected representatives.
Murmu, if elected, will be the first tribal president and the second woman in the post. She will also be the youngest president ever, second only to N Sanjeeva Reddy, who was a few days elder to her when he became the President.

After President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump tested positive with Covid-19, Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden and his wife too got their tests done. Biden tweeted that he and his wife Jill and both tested negative and thanked everyone for their message of concern. Biden was on the stage with Trump earlier this week participating in the Presidential debate. However, there is no confirmation whether Biden would hold campaigns later in the day.
