The Indian President said that the honour was more special because it coincided with the 150th anniversary of arrival of Indians in Suriname.

President Droupadi Murmu became the first Indian to receive Suriname's highest civilian honour.
Suriname's President Chandrikapersad Santokhi conferred 'The Grand Order of the Chain of Yellow Star' on Murmu at a ceremony on June 5, 2023.
Murmu said that the honour was more special because it coincided with the 150th anniversary of arrival of Indians in Suriname.
"Receiving this decoration during the historic commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Indian arrival in Suriname makes it more special. If this honour serves as a beacon of empowerment and encouragement for women in both our countries, then it becomes even more meaningful," she said.

A 2-judge bench of the top court allowed the petitioner to withdraw the plea.

Two days before the inauguration of India's new Parliament building, the Supreme Court refused to entertain a petition regarding the event.
The petitioner wanted President Droupadi Murmu, and not Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the new legislature building. A two-judge bench of the top court told the petitioner on May 26, 2023, that it understands "how and why" the plea was filed.
The court allowed the petitioner to withdraw the plea, despite the Union government saying that it might be filed in the High Court later.
Around 20 Opposition parties have decided to boycott the ceremony to protest the "sidelining" of the president. In a joint statement on May 24, 19 political parties said, "When the soul of democracy has been sucked out of Parliament, we find no value in a new building." The BJP-led NDA shot back, condemning the "contemptuous" decision.
"This act is not merely disrespectful; it is a blatant affront to the democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation," parties belonging to the ruling NDA said in a statement on May 24.

The president had approved the conferment of 106 Padma awards, including three duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one), on the eve of this year's Republic Day.

&nbsp;President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday conferred Padma awards to former Karnataka chief minister S M Krishna, noted industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and famous playback singer Suman Kalyanpur at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Besides them, billionaire stock market investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who had passed away last year, was given the honour posthumously along with several unsung heroes.
The president had approved the conferment of 106 Padma awards, including three duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one), on the eve of this year's Republic Day.
Of these, over 50 people were awarded Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri on Wednesday.
Krishna, who was external affairs minister in the Congress-led UPA government and had later joined the BJP, was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
Noted architect Balkrishna Doshi (posthumously) was also given the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian honour.

Birla, Delhi-based professor Kapil Kapoor, who is widely known for his books on Indian grammatical theories and models, spiritual leader Kamlesh D Patel and Kalyanpur were conferred the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian award.
Jhunjhunwala was conferred with the Padma Shri.

Egypt President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was received at the Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 January 2023.
El-Sisi, the chief guest at the 2023 Republic Day celebrations, was accorded a ceremonial welcome which included a 21-gun salute.
El-Sisi is visiting India as the two countries celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations. The Indian government said, "The visit is an opportunity to review and strengthen our multifaceted ties."
The Egyptian leader arrived in India on 24 January for a 3-day visit, with wide-ranging talks and inkinf of half a dozen agreements scheduled for the following day.
The Egyptian president previously visited India in October 2015 to participate in the third India-Africa Forum Summit which was followed by his state visit in September 2016.
This is for the first time that the President of Egypt has been invited as the chief guest to India's Republic Day celebrations. A military contingent from the Egyptian Army will also participate in the Republic Day parade.
