A tribal woman who was carried in a 'dholi' (makeshift stretcher) due to the lack of proper roads after she went into labour gave birth in transit in Shahapur taluka of Thane district of Maharashtra on Sunday.
A video of the woman being carried in the dholi has gone viral on social media.
The woman from Patikacha Pada hamlet was being carried in the dholi in the late morning hours by her family members and some villagers. At around noon, she delivered a girl, a villager and an ASHA worker said.
The woman and the baby were later taken to the Kasara primary health center (PHC) in a private vehicle.
A villager said they crossed streams and difficult terrain while taking the woman to the nearest PHC from their hamlet.
"Luckily, an ASHA worker accompanied us and helped in the smooth delivery," he said.
Villagers claimed their village was adopted by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde when he was the guardian minister of Thane district.
The mother and the baby are safe and stable, the health worker said.&nbsp;

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures significantly increases the risk of complications in pregnant women, according to a new study.&nbsp;

New research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reveals that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can raise the risk of complications like sepsis, hemorrhage, and clotting disorders by up to 27 per cent in pregnant women.
This study, which examined over 400,000 pregnancies in Southern California, also discovered that exposure to high heat during the final week of pregnancy can lead to an increased risk of life-threatening delivery complications.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points out that pregnant women face greater challenges in regulating their body temperature, as they must cool both themselves and their developing baby. This makes them more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Additionally, due to increased vulnerability to dehydration, their bodies have a reduced ability to cool down.
Researchers advise pregnant women to limit their time outdoors during periods of extreme temperatures as the best precautionary measure.

Food cravings during pregnancy is a complex matter and no one can really tell why these cravings happen. However, a recent study has come up with some weird food cravings pregnant women have.
The survey conducted by OnePoll stated that mothers sometimes crave bizarre food combos such as pickles and cheese, peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches with five bread layers, during pregnancy.
According to the survey, 89 per cent of women among 2,000 who gave birth in the last six years experienced at least one type of food craving during their pregnancy. While 42 per cent had unusual food cravings, 35 per cent of women wanted a specific food that they could only get at one place.
The study also concluded that despite all cravings 50 per cent of the women started eating more nutritious foods by the end of the first trimester and 68 per cent started taking a prenatal vitamin for better health of their unborn baby.

The incident took place on Friday when Sonali Waghat, who was in the ninth month of pregnancy, walked for 3.5 km under the scorching sun to reach a Primary Health Centre. She again walked another 3.5 km back home.

A 21-year-old pregnant tribal woman died of sunstroke after walking for seven kilometres from a village to go to a primary health centre (PHC) and then returning home in Maharashtra's Palghar district, health officials said on Monday.
The incident took place on Friday when Sonali Waghat, from Osar Veera village in Dahanu taluka, walked for 3.5 km under the scorching sun to reach a highway nearby from where she took an auto-rickshaw to the Tawa PHC as she was not keeping well, Palghar district civil surgeon Dr Sanjay Bodade told PTI.
The woman, who was in the ninth month of pregnancy, was treated at the PHC and sent home. She again walked for another 3.5 km back home from the highway amid the sweltering summer heat, he said.
Later in the evening, she developed health complications and went to the Dhundalwadi PHC, from where she was referred to the Kasa sub-divisional hospital (SDH) where she was found to be in a "semi-comorbid condition," the official said.
Doctors treated her as she was running a high temperature and referred her to a speciality hospital at Dhundalwadi in Dahanu for further treatment, he said.
However, she died en-route in an ambulance and also lost her foetus, the doctor said.
She was not in labour pain and doctors at the Kasa PHC had given her immediate attention. Since they could not treat her due to her "semi-comorbid condition", they referred her to a speciality hospital, he said.
As the woman walked for seven km in the hot weather, it aggravated her condition and resulted in sunstroke and death subsequently, the official said.
Dr Bodade said he visited the PHCs and the SDH and carried out a detailed probe into the incident.
Palghar Zilla Parishad president Prakash Nikam, who was at the Kasa SDH on Monday morning, told PTI that the woman had anaemia and an ASHA (accredited social health activist) worker had brought her to the SDH. The doctors there checked her and gave her medicines, but in vain, he said.
He said the Kasa SDH does not have an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and specialist doctors to treat such patients in conditions of emergency.
"Had these facilities been there, the tribal woman's life could have been saved," he said.
Nikam said he will take up this issue at an appropriate level and ensure such incidents do not recur.
