After a special court acquitted all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, Pragya Thakur and Lt Col Purohit expressed relief, calling it a win for justice and 'bhagwa'.

Former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit on Thursday hailed a special court's order acquitting them in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, which claimed six lives and injured 101 others.
Thakur said the acquittal was not just a win for her, but for every "bhagwa" (saffron). She also said her life was ruined for the past 17 years, and that God will punish those who tried to insult "bhagwa".
After the verdict, Thakur, Purohit and the other five accused thanked Special NIA Judge A K Lahoti and their lawyers.
Thakur told the court her life was spoilt since her arrest in the case in 2008 and that she was able to survive only because she was a "sanyasi".
"This case was not just fought by me but by Bhagwa (saffron). Mera pura jeewan kalankit kar diya tha (my whole life had been disgraced)," she said.
"Aaj Bhagwa ki vijay hui hai, nyay ki jeet hui hai (today Bhagwa has won, justice has won). Jisne bhi bhagwa ko badnaam kiya bhagwaan use saza dega (whoever insulted bhagwa, God will punish them)," Thakur told the court.
Purohit said he was implicated in the case and asserted he will continue to serve the nation as before and with the same vigor.
"No investigating agency is wrong; it is the people serving in these agencies who are wrong. This nation is great. We must take care that wrong people do not rise and make people like us suffer," he said.
Purohit, who was reinstated in the Army pending trial, said he would continue serving the organisation and the nation.

A special NIA court acquitted all 7 accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, citing lack of cogent evidence. The accused included Pragya Thakur and Lt Col Purohit.

Nearly 17 years after the Malegaon blast claimed six lives, a special court on Thursday acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit, noting there was "no reliable and cogent evidence" against them.
No religion teaches violence, the court said. Terrorism has no religion, but the court cannot convict on mere perception, it added.
Special Judge A K Lahoti, assigned to hear cases of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) here, flagged several loopholes in the prosecution's case and the investigation carried out, and said the accused persons deserved the benefit of doubt.

Besides Thakur and Purohit, the accused comprised Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retired), Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi, Sudhakar Chaturvedi and Sameer Kulkarni.
Once the court acquitted the seven accused, they looked relieved with smiles on their faces. They thanked the judge and their lawyers.
The court while reading out the judgment said there was no "reliable and cogent" evidence to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.
"Mere suspicion cannot take the place of real proof," the court said, adding that in the absence of any evidence, the accused persons deserve the benefit of doubt.
"The overall evidence does not inspire confidence in the court to convict the accused. There is no reliable and cogent evidence to warrant conviction," the judge said while reading out the judgment.
The court also said provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) were not applicable to the case.
The court said it was not established that the motorbike used in the blast was registered in the name of Thakur, as claimed by the prosecution.
It has also not been established that the blast was carried out by the bomb allegedly planted on the bike, the court said.
Before the verdict was announced, the seven accused, all out on bail, arrived at the sessions court in south Mumbai which was barricaded with heavy security.
All the accused were charged for committing a terrorist act under provisions of the UAPA and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.
The prosecution's claim was that the blast was orchestrated by right wing extremists with an intention to terrorise the local Muslim community.
The NIA, which conducted the probe into the case, had sought "commensurate punishment" for the accused.
The trial, which started in 2018, got over on April 19 this year.
The probe was initially carried out by the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which had pinned the blame on right wing extremists who were members of 'Abhinav Bharat' group.
The probe was later handed over to the NIA, which initially given a clean chit to Thakur, but the court had said there was prima facie evidence for her to face trial in the case.
In its final argument, the NIA submitted that the blast in Malegaon - a town with a sizable Muslim population - was orchestrated by the conspirators to terrorise a section of Muslim community, disrupt essential services, create communal tensions and threaten the state's internal security.
The blast took place during the holy month of Ramzan, just before the Navratri festival, the NIA pointed out, claiming the intention of the accused was to strike terror in a section of the Muslim community.
The charges comprised UAPA sections 16 (committing terrorist act) and 18 (conspiring to commit terrorist act) and various IPC sections, including 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 153 (a) (promoting enmity between two religious groups).
During the trial, the prosecution presented 323 witnesses, of whom 37 turned hostile.&nbsp;

But what made BJP embarrassed is when she referred Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a patriot.
The remarks drew wide condemnation, with PM Modi saying that he would never pardon her.
"I will never be able to forgive Pragya Thakur for insulting Mahatma Gandhi," the Prime Minister had said.

Akasa Air has said it will carry out a detailed probe into the "deboarding experience" of BJP leader Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur at the Delhi airport.

Akasa Air on Friday said it will carry out a detailed investigation into the "deboarding experience" of BJP leader and Lok Sabha member Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur at the Delhi airport after she alleged that airline staff conspired and tried to cause loss to her.
Details about the incident that happened on February 15 after the member landed at the Delhi airport from Mumbai in an Akasa Air flight could not be immediately ascertained.
In a post on X on Friday, Thakur alleged that Akasa Air's duty manager Imran and his associates conspired and tried to cause loss to her.
Tagging civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, she requested the minister to take action about the incident.
"We regret the deboarding experience that Hon'ble Member of Parliament Ms Pragya Thakur had on our flight QP1120 on February 15, 2024. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to her.
"While we will investigate the incident in detail, we take this as an opportunity to learn and to continue improving on our services," an Akasa Air spokesperson said in a statement to PTI.
Thakur represents Bhopal constituency in Lok Sabha.

Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha MP Pragya Thakur on Saturday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi must be thrown out of the country for some of his statements made on foreign soil.
Gandhi had, on Monday, told British parliamentarians in London that functioning microphones in the Lok Sabha are often silenced against the Opposition. He made the comment during an event organised by veteran Indian-origin Opposition Labour Party MP Virendra Sharma in the Grand Committee Room within the House of Commons complex.
Thakur, who is Lok Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal, also claimed Chanakya had said a "son born to a foreign woman can never be a patriot" and that "Rahul Gandhi had "proved" the saying was true.

She was replying to a query on Gandhi's allegations during an event in the UK that his party colleagues were not being allowed to speak in Parliament.

The disciples of 'gurukul' (traditional Hindu educational institutions) wear 'bhagwa' (saffron) attire, but when such students go to other schools, they wear the school uniform and follow the discipline of the educational institutions, she added.
Thakur said that khijab is used for hiding the greying hair, while hijab is meant to cover faces.
"Hijab is a purdah. Purdah should be (used) against those who see you with evil eyes. But it is certain that Hindus don't see them with evil eyes as they worship women," she said.
In 'sanatan dharma', the place where women are not revered is like a crematorium, Thakur said while chanting a 'shloka' (verse).
"You should wear hijab in your homes," she added while citing the marriage customs among Muslims.

Police on Wednesday registered a case against firebrand BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur for her alleged inflammatory speech at a convention organised recently by a pro-Hindu outfit.
The case has been registered at the Kote police station, based on a complaint by Shivamogga District Congress Committee president H S Sundaresh, officials said.
According to police, the case has been registered against the Bhopal MP under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).

Madhya Pradesh Congress media department's chairman KK Mishra told PTI that the Centre should now take action by registering a case for treason as Thakur "incited people for violence".

Defending the Bhopal MP, her elder sister Upma Thakur told PTI over phone that she suffers from a spine problem.
"You never know at which moment it can create problems for her. There is a problem with her L4 and L5 bones (vertebrae) as they got dislocated because ATS Maharashtra (investigators) threw her on the floor.&rdquo; &ldquo;Whenever these problems occur, the lower portion (of her body) is left with no sensation....It can happen even when she sits or gets down from a vehicle,&rdquo; Upma said.
MP Congress media department's vice president Bhupendra Gupta said, &ldquo;There are different faces of Bhopal MP. Sometimes she is seen in a wheelchair, sometime she plays Garba and kabaddi too. She has many faces.&rdquo; Her past claims of defeating coronavirus with cow urine are worth publishing in international journals, he said in another jibe.
"People of Madhya Pradesh want to know which is her right face &mdash; one playing garba or kabaddi or that of a wheelchair-bound person?" he asked.
The 51-year-old BJP MP is out on bail in the Malegaon blast case on health grounds and had sought exemption from personal appearance in the trial court citing her physical condition. She was in prison for almost nine years and was granted bail in 2017.
The case against her relates to bomb blasts at Malegaon in Maharashtra on September 29, 2008, in which at least six persons died. The case was probed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) before the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took it over.

There is a problem with her L4 and L5 bones (vertebrae) as they got dislocated because ATS Maharashtra (investigators) threw her on the floor.&rdquo; &ldquo;Whenever these problems occur, the lower portion (of her body) is left with no sensation....It can happen even when she sits or gets down from a vehicle,&rdquo; Upma said.
MP Congress media department's vice president Bhupendra Gupta said, &ldquo;There are different faces of Bhopal MP. Sometimes she is seen in a wheelchair, sometime she plays Garba and kabaddi too. She has many faces.&rdquo; Her past claims of defeating coronavirus with cow urine are worth publishing in international journals, he said in another jibe.
"People of Madhya Pradesh want to know which is her right face &mdash; one playing garba or kabaddi or that of a wheelchair-bound person?" he asked.
The 51-year-old BJP MP is out on bail in the Malegaon blast case on health grounds and had sought exemption from personal appearance in the trial court citing her physical condition. She was in prison for almost nine years and was granted bail in 2017.
The case against her relates to bomb blasts at Malegaon in Maharashtra on September 29, 2008, in which at least six persons died. The case was probed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) before the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took it over.

Opposition Congress said it was delighted to see the Malegoan&nbsp;blast accused, who is out on bail, playing the sport considering they were under the impression she couldn&rsquo;t stand or walk due to her poor health. The BJP&nbsp;leader, who has been accused of saffron terror&nbsp;dribbled the ball with right hand and netted it with perfection amid cheers and clapping as seen in the video.
