India now has more women than men. The country is not getting any younger. And India no longer faces the threat of a population explosion.
These are the findings of the fifth round of the National Family and Health Survey, which were released by the Union health ministry on Wednesday.
The survey indicates that India now has 1,020 women for every 1000 men.
In 1990 when nobel laureate Amartya Sen coined the term "missing women", there were 927 women per 1,000 men in India. According to third round of the survey conducted in 2005-06, the ratio was equal, 1000: 1000. Then it went down to 991:1000 in 2015-16 in fourth survey.
This is the first time, in any NFHS or Census, that the sex ratio is skewed in favour of women.
There are other interesting findings. The share of population under the age of 15 years, which was 34.9% in 2005-06, has come down to 26.5% now. So, India is still a young country, but it is ageing.
The total fertility rate (TFR), or the average number of children per women in India, is now just 2, which is below the internationally accepted replacement level fertility rate. This means, India’s population may have peaked and there is no longer a threat of population explosion.
To be sure, NFHS is a sample survey, and whether these numbers apply to the larger population can only be said with certainty when the next national census is conducted.

This year looks at prioritizing and creating awareness about reproductive health and rights for all.
The current pandemic situation has led to a rise in concerns about shifting population and fertility rates due to "baby busts" and "baby booms."
According to the United Nations Population Fund, while people who had access to reproductive health services postponed childbearing during the pandemic, the vulnerable were faced with a disruption in the supply of contraceptives leading to unintended pregnancies. A research carried out by UNFPA in March pointed out that around 12 million women were subjected to hampered accessibility to family planning services.
According to the Executive Director, Dr. Natalia Kanem, &ldquo;the real cause for an alarm comes when people cannot exercise their sexual and reproductive rights and choices because of disruptions in health services.&rdquo;&nbsp;It is believed that with or without a pandemic people must have the right to exercise choice over their bodies and fertility.

A Mizoram minister has announced a cash incentive of ₹ 1 lakh to a living parent with the highest number of children in his constituency to encourage population growth among the demographically small Mizo communities.
Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte did not mention the minimum number of children.
The declaration came at a time when several Indian states are advocating a population control policy.
On the occasion of Father's Day on Sunday, Royte announced that he would reward a living man or woman having the largest number of offspring within his Aizawl East-2 assembly constituency with a cash incentive of ₹ 1 lakh.
The person will also get a certificate and a trophy, the minister said in a statement on Monday.
The minister said that the infertility rate and the decreasing growth rate of the Mizo population has become a serious concern.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that his government will soon implement a two-child policy for availing benefits under the state govt schemes.
&ldquo;Be it a loan waiver or any other government scheme, we will slowly implement a population policy for these schemes,": the CM said. He, however, added that the population norms will not be applicable to tea garden workers and SC/ST communities. The new policy will be imposed on all others availing benefits from the government in future because the population policy has already started in Assam, Sarma told reporters.
Assam currently has a two-child norm along with requirements of minimum educational qualifications and functional sanitary toilets for contesting in panchayat polls.
The Assam cabinet had also taken a decision that no government jobs will be given to those who have more than two children after January 1, 2021.
