Poonch search operation to hunt terrorists continues after army convoy attack

&nbsp;A cordon-and-search operation was underway in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday to track down terrorists who had fired on a convoy of Army vehicles a day ago, officials said.
There was no casualty in the attack on the convoy on Friday.
Troops are using sniffer dogs and aerial surveillance to comb the area, which has dense forest, the officials said.
The cordon-and-search operation was underway to track the attackers, a senior officer said.
The vehicles that came under attack near Krishna Ghati in Poonch sector on Friday evening were carrying security personnel back to a camp.
No one was injured in the attack and the commanding officer as well as other Army personnel were safe, officials said.
A similar ambush on Army vehicles took place in Poonch's Dhatya Morh in the Dera Ki Gali area on December 21. Four Army personnel were killed in the attack.
Rajouri and Poonch districts have witnessed targeted attacks by terrorists on the Army and civilians in the recent past, they said.
Nineteen soldiers were killed in four terrorist attacks in Rajouri and Poonch in 2023.
Security forces killed more than 30 terrorists in the two districts -- along the Line of Control (LoC) as well as in the hinterland -- last year.&nbsp;

Amid Poonch anti-terror operation, searches launched in Rajouri 

Officials said in 2022, a similar suspicious sighting was reported in the same area.&nbsp;

Security forces on Friday launched a search operation in a forest area in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district following information about the movement of suspicious elements, officials said.
Acting on the information from the Muradpur area of Kalakote, security forces launched the operation in the Afla, Muradpur, Bothni and Swani areas, they said.
Nothing came up so far, the officials said, adding the operation is still underway.
Last year, a similar suspicious sighting was reported in the same area, they said.&nbsp;

Battling difficult terrains and dense forests, security forces continued to carry out cordon and search operations for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday to track down the terrorists behind the ambush that left four soldiers dead in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Poonch last week, officials said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to visit ground zero on Wednesday with top Army and civilian officials monitoring the situation in Poonch in view of the terrorist attack which was followed by the death of three civilians in the area, official sources said.
Over 30 suspects have been questioned during the past few days and several of them have been released, they said.
"The cordon and search operation is going on to track down the terrorists involved in the ambush on Army vehicles," a senior official told PTI.
The official said that the operation includes sniffer dogs, surveillance equipment and aerial mechanisms. Additional forces have been deployed to plug seven infiltration routes amid area domination operations in the area, he said.
Operations are being carried out cautiously as there are dense forests, deep gorges and caves, official sources said.
Mobile internet services will remain suspended in Rajouri and Poonch for the fourth day in a row.
The defence minister is likely to visit the area on Wednesday and hold meetings with top commanders on the measures being taken to deal with the situation, they said.
His visit follows Chief of Army staff (CoAS) General Manoj Pande's visit to ground zero in Poonch on Monday where he reviewed the anti-terrorist operation under way in Surankote and nearby Rajouri district's Thanamandi forest belt.
General Pande asked security personnel to remain resolute and steadfast against all challenges.
Three civilians picked up by the Army for questioning after the terrorist ambushed two Army vehicles on Thursday at Dhatyar Morh between Dhera Ki Gali and Buffliaz in Poonch were found dead on Friday.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday announced compensation and jobs to the families of the dead civilians and said the medico legal formalities were conducted and legal action on the matter has been initiated.
The Army has ordered a thorough internal investigation into the civilian deaths and said it is committed to extending full support and cooperation in the conduct of the investigation.

According to officials, the three men were found dead under suspicious circumstances on Friday near the site of an ambush by terrorists on Army vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, leaving five soldiers dead and two injured the previous day.
The deceased -- -- Safeer Hussain (43), Mohammad Showket (27) and Shabir Ahmad (32) -- were among the eight people reportedly picked up by the Army for questioning in connection with Thursday's attack, the officials had said.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, however, claimed that 15 people were picked up by the Army for questioning, of whom three died, while the remaining were seriously injured.
&ldquo;After the Poonch incident, 15 people were picked up by the Army for questioning from Topa Peer village, out of which bodies of three bearing injury marks were found near the encounter site. The remaining 12 persons are admitted to different hospitals and are in critical condition,&rdquo; Mehbooba said at a press conference at the party headquarters here on Saturday.
The former chief minister of J-K demanded that the Jammu and Kashmir administration sanction a compensation of Rs 50 lakh each for the families of the three deceased.

&ldquo;I request the Lieutenant Governor that till the time an inquiry is done into the matter, the three families be provided with a relief of Rs 50 lakh each and the injured admitted to hospitals be provided Rs 5 lakh each. Their families are very poor,&rdquo; she said.
She also referred to a video purportedly showing a few Armymen torturing some suspects.
&ldquo;I also watched a video that shows Armymen thrashing people and spraying red chilli powder on their wounds. It is a heart-wrenching video, however, I do not know about its authenticity," Mehbooba said.
Meanwhile, scores of activists of the Apni Party led by their Kashmir provincial president Ashraf Mir protested at the party headquarters in the Church Lane area here on Saturday against the civilian deaths.

The protestors tried marching out of their office but were stopped by the police.
&ldquo;We want justice for the killed civilians. A thorough investigation of the case should be done,&rdquo; Mir said, speaking to reporters.
The National Conference (NC) Saturday also protested over the same issue.
The NC workers shouted slogans demanding authorities to &ldquo;stop the bloodshed of innocents&rdquo;. They, too, were stopped by the police when they tried to march out of their party office.
&ldquo;NC has always condemned terror. We condemn the killing of five armymen. But, we also condemn the killing of innocent civilians. When the government announced NIA inquiry into the killing of Armymen, then an inquiry should also be launched into the killing of civilians,&rdquo; the party&rsquo;s general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said.
Meanwhile, senior CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami demanded a prompt and impartial inquiry into the mysterious death of the three persons.
&ldquo;Demanding a fair probe into the "mysterious" death of 3 civilians near the encounter spot in Poonch. A prompt &amp; impartial probe is crucial to ascertain the cause of their death,&rdquo; Tarigami said in a post on X.
&ldquo;Also condemning in no uncertain terms the militant attack in which 5 soldiers made ultimate sacrifices in the line of duty. My deep condolences to their families,&rdquo; the CPI(M) leader's post added.

The suspension of the mobile Internet services in the twin border districts followed mysterious death of three persons after being allegedly picked up by the Army for questioning, and widespread resentment among people after the circulation of videos purportedly showing torture of the suspects. While both Army and civil authorities are tight-lipped on the ground situation, official sources said mobile Internet services were suspended both in Poonch and Rajouri districts as a precautionary measure to check rumour-mongering and prevent miscreants from creating any law and order problem.
Senior Army, police and civil officers are monitoring the situation, the sources said, adding additional police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in sensitive pockets of the districts to maintain peace. Three to four heavily-armed terrorists targeted an army gypsy and a truck at Dhatyar Morh between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz under the jurisdiction of Surankote police station in Poonch late Thursday afternoon, killing five soldiers and injuring two others. After the attack, the terrorists reportedly mutilated the bodies of at least two soldiers and took weapons of some of them.
A massive search operation was launched immediately after the attack in the densely forested areas, also covering nearby Thanamandi in Rajouri but there was no fresh contact with the fleeing terrorists so far, the officials said. Three persons, who were among those detained for questioning by Army in connection with Thursday's attack, died mysteriously on Friday. The deceased were among the eight people reportedly picked up by the Army for questioning in connection with Thursday's attack at Dhatyar Morh, between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz, under the jurisdiction of the Surankote police station, the officials said.
A massive search operation is underway in the dense forests to track down the terrorists as General Officer Commanding of Jammu-based White Knight Corps Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain and Director General of Police R R Swain inspected the scene of the ambush and reviewed the security situation, they added.
A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), headed by a deputy inspector general-rank officer, also visited the ambush site but a top official said the agency was not assigned the case for probe so far.
The officials said three men -- Safeer Hussain (43), Mohammad Showket (27) and Shabir Ahmad (32), all residents of Topa Peer village of Bufliaz -- died under mysterious circumstances but the cause of their death was not known immediately.
Poonch Deputy Commissioner Choudhary Mohammad Yasin and Senior Superintendent of Police Vinay Kumar reached Bufliaz following the reports of the death of the three men, while Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar is also heading for Surankote, the officials said.
Three to four heavily-armed terrorists targeted a Maruti gypsy and a truck of the Army late Thursday afternoon, killing the five soldiers and injuring two.
After the attack, the terrorists reportedly mutilated the bodies of at least two soldiers and took away the weapons of some of them.
Lt Gen. Jain visited Ground Zero and reviewed the situation with top Army and police officers.
"Indian Army and White Knight Corps salute the bravery and supreme sacrifice of four soldiers in Surankote yesterday while fighting the scourge of terrorism," White Knight Corps or XVI Corps wrote on X.
The DGP, along with other senior officers including Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Anand Jain, visited Poonch and reviewed the security situation, the officials said.
An official said aerial monitoring with the help of helicopters is also being conducted and sniffer dogs have been pressed into service to track down the terrorists.
"A massive cordon-and-search operation began this morning after a night cordon in the area," an officer told PTI.
The operation is still going on.
The officer said additional troops have been inducted into the area to track down the terrorists.
Security experts said the rising number of terror incidents in the Rajouri-Poonch region is concerning.
"It is a matter of concern. It is the second incident in the last two months. This region was peaceful till recently. During the last two years, 35 soldiers were killed here. Why is it happening? Why have terrorists got so emboldened?" defence expert Colonel S S Pathania wondered.
Security expert Captain (retired) Anil Gaur said Pakistan is trying to revive terrorism in the region by engineering these incidents. "There is some fault in how we are dealing with terrorism. It is time to strengthen intelligence and security setup of the region and eliminate all terrorists in difficult areas. There are caves," he said.
In Jammu, several organisations, including the Jammu Statehood Organisation, held anti-Pakistan protests and burnt the effigy of Pakistan.
The Shiv Sena Dogra Front also held anti-Pakistan protests and demanded an all-out operation to get rid of terrorists from the area. They urged the government to carry out special operations along forest areas and strengthen the intelligence network.
