Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a two-day US visit to hold bilateral talks with President Donald Trump, focusing on trade, defense, technology, and regional security.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a two-day working visit to the US starting Wednesday and hold a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump, with New Delhi saying it will give further direction and momentum to this &ldquo;important partnership&rdquo;.
Modi, who is currently visiting France at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron, would be among the first few world leaders to visit the United States following the January 20 inauguration after Trump&rsquo;s victory in the US elections last November.
The visit will provide a &ldquo;valuable opportunity&rdquo; to engage the new administration in all areas of mutual interest, senior officials said.
The prime minister&rsquo;s visit to the US at the invitation of President Trump shows the &ldquo;importance of India-US partnership and is also reflective of the bipartisan support that this partnership enjoys in the US&rdquo;, Foreign Secretary said Vikram Misri said here in a briefing on February 7.
Modi will also interact with business leaders and members of the Indian community in the US.
PM Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with President Trump in both restricted and delegation-level formats, he said.
A range of bilateral issues are expected to be on the table besides, besides discussions on regional and international situation.
&ldquo;There is an obvious convergence of interests between the two countries in a number of areas &mdash; trade, investment, technology, defence cooperation, counterterrorism, Indo-Pacific security, and of course, people-to-people relations,&rdquo; the FS said in the briefing.
The visit is also expected to boost people-to-people ties between India and the US.
&ldquo;The 5.4 million-strong Indian community in the US and the more than 3,50,000 students from India who are pursuing studies in universities strengthen this bond immeasurably,&rdquo; Misri said.
&ldquo;The prime minister&rsquo;s visit to the United States will give further direction and momentum to this important partnership. We expect a joint statement to be adopted at the end of the visit and will share that in due course,&rdquo; the foreign secretary said.
This will be Modi&rsquo;s first visit since the inauguration of the second presidential term of Trump on January 20.
&ldquo;After President Trump&rsquo;s inauguration, the prime minister called to wish him, and it was on that occasion they agreed to meet very soon, and that is the promise and the commitment that is now unfolding,&rdquo; he said.

The Centre announced on Friday that U.S. authorities have identified an additional 487 illegal Indian migrants, who are now scheduled for deportation.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking at a press conference, stated that the U.S. has informed New Delhi about "487 presumed Indian nationals" who have received removal orders.

"We've been told there are 487 presumed Indian citizens with final removal orders," Misri explained.
He also indicated that the number could increase as more information becomes available, although no additional details have been provided by U.S. authorities regarding other individuals.
The Indian government has confirmed the identities of the 487 migrants currently on the deportation list.
Earlier, a U.S. military aircraft carrying 104 deported migrants arrived in Amritsar on January 5, marking the first major deportation under President Donald Trump's administration as part of his crackdown on illegal immigration.
The deportees, who had attempted to enter the U.S. illegally, reported that their hands and legs were shackled throughout the flight and were only unbound after arriving in Amritsar.
Regarding concerns over the "inhumane treatment" of Indian deportees, Misri acknowledged that it was a "valid concern" and confirmed that the Indian government would address the issue with U.S. authorities.
"The description by the EAM of the standard operating procedure relating to the use of restraints has been communicated to us by U.S. authorities, including immigration and customs enforcement. EAM attracted attention to the fact that these practices have been in place for a long period," he added.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled for a two-day working visit to the U.S. beginning February 12, where he will meet with President Donald Trump.

This trip follows an invitation extended by Trump and comes shortly after he began his second term in the White House.
The visit also takes place amid growing criticism of the Indian government's handling of the deportation of 104 Indian immigrants by the U.S. this week, part of Trump&rsquo;s broader immigration policies.
On January 27, Trump had a conversation with Modi, where they discussed immigration issues and highlighted the need for India to increase its purchases of American-made security equipment, as well as promote equitable trade relations between the two nations.
India, a key strategic ally of the U.S. in efforts to counter China's influence, is focused on boosting trade relations and facilitating easier access to skilled worker visas for its citizens. India also seeks to avoid tariffs previously threatened by Trump in response to India&rsquo;s high tariffs on U.S. goods.

Additionally, Modi is scheduled to visit Cadarache, the location of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, where India is a partner, Misri added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to pay a two-day visit to the U.S. from February 12 to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on a range of issues including trade and defence, people familiar with the matter said on Monday (February 3, 2025).
As per the plan, Modi will travel to Washington D.C. after concluding his two-day visit to Paris, they said.
The Prime Minister is expected to land in the American capital on the evening of February 12 and he and Trump are expected to hold the talks the next day, the people said.
It would be the Prime Minister's first bilateral visit to the U.S. after Trump assumed the presidency for a second term on January 20 following his stunning electoral victory in November.
PM Modi will be among a very handful of foreign leaders to travel to Washington D.C. on a bilateral visit within weeks after the Trump administration came to power.
However, there is no official word yet on Modi's visit. Last week, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said New Delhi is working with Washington for an "early" visit of PM Modi to the U.S.
The Prime Minister is travelling to Paris to attend the Artificial Intelligence Action summit on February 10 and 11.
Modi's visit to the U.S. is taking place against the backdrop of concerns in India over the U.S. President's approach on immigration and tariff.
President Trump on Sunday announced imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports as well as an additional 10% tax on Chinese goods. But he later delayed the start of tariffs on neighbors Mexico and Canada for a month, but China remained in the firing line.
PM Modi and President Trump, during a phone conversation on January 27, vowed to work towards a "trusted" partnership with a focus on boosting India-U.S. cooperation in areas of trade, energy and defence.
Following the phone talks, the White House said Trump emphasised the importance of India increasing its procurement of U.S.-made security equipment and moving toward a fair bilateral trade relationship.
"Both leaders emphasised their commitment to advance the US-India strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, with India hosting Quad Leaders for the first time later this year," it said.
India has already indicated its keenness to expand its energy ties with the U.S., especially in the clean energy sector.
New Delhi on Saturday announced plans to amend its nuclear liability law and set up a nuclear energy mission, a move that came ahead of Modi's trip to the U.S.
Certain clauses in India's Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010 have emerged as hurdles in moving forward in implementation of the historic civil nuclear deal that was firmed up between the two strategic partners around 16 years back.
It is learnt that India is looking at the possibility of civil nuclear cooperation with the US in the small modular reactors (SMRs).
U.S.-based Holtec International is known to be one of the leading exporters of SMRs globally and the Department of Atomic Energy is learnt to be interested in having some collaboration with the American firm.
