The CAB demands BCCI ban Bhogle and Doull from Eden Gardens for criticizing pitch prep, asserting support for their curator.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ban commentators Harsha Bhogle and Simon Doull from covering matches at Kolkata's Eden Gardens due to their outspoken criticism of the pitch preparation.
This move comes after the commentators suggested relocating the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) due to the curator's refusal to prepare pitches as per the franchise's requests.
According to a report by RevSportz, the CAB has submitted a strongly worded letter to the BCCI. It urges the board to prevent Bhogle and/or Doull from commentating during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season at Eden Gardens.
During a session on Cricbuzz, Doull opined that if the curator at Eden Gardens continues to disregard the home team's wishes, KKR should consider changing their home ground. Doull expressed that the curator's role is to accommodate the home team's preferences, as they finance the use of the stadium during the IPL. "If he's still not paying heed to what the home team wants, then just move the franchise away to somewhere else," Doull commented, emphasizing that the curator should not impose his opinions on the game.
Harsha Bhogle also shared a similar viewpoint, stating that a home team should have a pitch tailored to benefit their bowlers. "I saw something about what the KKR curator has said," Bhogle noted.
However, the CAB is backing curator Mukherjee, asserting that he is adhering to official BCCI guidelines, which prohibit franchises from dictating the specific nature of pitch preparation. KKR&rsquo;s captain, Ajinkya Rahane, reportedly requested a spin-friendly wicket to support their key bowlers such as Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, but the pitch often ended up being more conducive to pace, resulting in high-scoring matches.
The CAB insists that the curator has followed the rules regarding pitch preparation. As of now, no official statement has been issued by the BCCI. Nonetheless, it has been reported that Bhogle and Doull are unlikely to commentate on the upcoming KKR match against the Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on Monday.
In addition, it&rsquo;s noteworthy that Eden Gardens is set to host the IPL 2025 final on May 25, which adds another layer of significance to this ongoing debate.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) rated the Indore pitch as "poor".
McDonald said his team does not know what sort of a pitch awaits Australia in the final Test match at Ahmedabad but believes the win in Indore has clearly added some pressure in the Indian change room. India need to win the final Test to book their spot in the World Test Championship final.

The T20 World Cup currently underway Down Under has once again drawn attention to these drop-in pitches.

So, what exactly is a drop-in pitch?
Like, the name would suggest, these pitches are not made at the venue itself but are dropped in. In fact, these custom-made pitches are prepared elsewhere, before they are put onto cement slabs and transported to their destination. These panels are then dropped a few inches deep into the ground, and the artificial turf is then rolled around it to level the surface.

Why are drop-in pitches used?
Using a drop-in pitch allows the stadium/venue to have a multi-purpose role. While the pitches are dropped in during the cricket season, these venues can be used for other sporting events as well as music concerts during the off-season.
For example - the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, Adelaide Oval and Eden Park in Auckland host a variety of sports, including football, AFL &amp; rugby apart from cricket. Once the cricket season is over, these drop-in pitches are taken out and away to allow other sporting events. Before the cricket season begins, they are once again put back in place.

Future of drop-in pitches These drop-in pitches are being used at Australian venues since 1996. Earlier, there were doubts about the quality since these pitches were made in steel casings and didn't have the natural variation that comes with the usual deterioration of the surface. In fact, they were deemed 'too flat' in the past.
But advances, both in terms of understanding the topography and the contents of the soil used, have enhanced the quality of the contest as well. It also allows the curator to modify the pitch as he/she deems fit, which would not have been possible with conventional tracks.
Due to these advancements, countries like Pakistan are now looking at using drop-in pitches at their venues to maximise their revenues through year-round events.
