Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Thursday called the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) the "backbone of state development." Addressing a gathering during May Day celebrations, Kalyan alleged that the previous government had ruined rural development during its tenure.
"The MGNREGS is not just a welfare scheme&mdash;it is the backbone of rural Andhra Pradesh, sustaining livelihoods and driving grassroots development," said Kalyan.
He said that it is not only engineers and doctors who contribute to nation-building but also laborers who work under the scorching sun and shed sweat for the country&rsquo;s progress.
The Janasena Party (JSP) supremo said that Rs 10,669 crore was spent under MGNREGS last year, generating 24.23 crore person-days of work and directly benefiting 75.23 lakh rural workers across the state.
Wages were increased from Rs 150 to Rs 307, with Rs 6,194 crore paid as wages and Rs 4,023 crore allocated for material components.
Under the Palle Panduga (Village Festival) initiative, 21,564 cattle sheds were built at Rs 377.37 crore, improving farmers&rsquo; earnings through livestock-based livelihood support across rural areas.
Kalyan said that 13,500 animal water troughs were constructed and 63,582 acres of fruit orchards were developed, boosting sustainable livelihoods among SC, ST, and BC communities in rural regions.
As many as 4,000 km of cement roads were built in backward colonies, and the government now plans to construct an additional equal length during this financial year, said the Deputy CM.
The state government partnered with SBI to offer insurance coverage of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 30 lakh for MGNREGS functionaries through a special MoU, Kalyan said.
He added that proposals worth Rs 87,000 crore were sent under the Jal Jeevan Mission, of which Rs 29,000 crore has already been approved by the Centre.
It is a central plan aimed at providing drinking water through taps to households in rural India.

The Janasena Party on Wednesday condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were brutally killed. Party chief and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan announced a three-day mourning across Andhra Pradesh.
Pawan Kalyan expressed deep grief over the attack and directed that party flags be flown at half-mast during the mourning period, according to a party statement.
Candlelight vigils will be held across the state every evening during the three days, the statement added.
As part of the protest and to pray for the departed souls, a candlelight vigil will be held by Civil Supplies Minister N Manohar at Janasena&rsquo;s Mangalagiri office on Wednesday.
"Terrorism has no place in a civil society. We stand united and resolved in grief," Pawan Kalyan said, calling the attack inhuman and intolerable.
On Friday, human chains will be formed across the state in protest against terrorism, expressing solidarity with the victims and reaffirming Janasena&rsquo;s commitment to peace, the party said.
Andhra Pradesh BJP chief and Rajahmundry MP Daggubati Purandeswari called the attack heartbreaking and inhumane. She extended her condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel, B Srinivas Varma, echoed similar sentiments, describing the attack as "cowardly and unacceptable".
He emphasised the need for national unity in the fight against terrorism and the protection of innocent civilians.
Andhra Pradesh Congress chief Y S Sharmila Reddy also condemned the attack, calling it cowardly and painful, especially with Telugu people among the dead.
She urged the Centre to respond with strong action.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his support by personally contacting Pawan Kalyan, offering words of encouragement that provided strength during this challenging time. Additionally, the Indian High Commissioner in Singapore has been directed to offer necessary assistance. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu also reached out to express his concern. Pawan Kalyan expressed gratitude towards the numerous well-wishers, including politicians, actors, and others who prayed for his son&rsquo;s swift recovery, holding poojas at temples on Mark&rsquo;s behalf. &ldquo;Mark Shankar is gradually recovering due to these good-hearted wishes and blessings. I sincerely thank everyone,&rdquo; Kalyan stated. The fire broke out in a shophouse on River Valley Road in Singapore, where several individuals, including children, were caught in the blaze. Pawan Kalyan&rsquo;s eight-year-old son, Mark, sustained burns on his limbs and suffered from smoke inhalation. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) quickly responded to control the fire. At the time of the incident, Pawan Kalyan was in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitarama Raju district on an official visit, engaging with local communities. He promptly canceled his remaining engagements in Visakhapatnam to fly to Singapore and be with his son. Mark, who attends school in Singapore, is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu on March 9 confirmed his Telugu Desam Party and actor Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena Party have joined hands with the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Andhra Pradesh elections, which are expected to take place simultaneously.
Addressing reporters, Naidu expressed confidence in sweeping the elections.
"Andhra Pradesh has been destroyed badly. The BJP and the TDP coming together is a win-win situation for the country and the state," Naidu told a group of reporters here while lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
The alliance will sweep the polls in Andhra Pradesh, he asserted, lashing out at the YSR Congress, which is in power in the southern state.
Though an official announcement on seat sharing is awaited, the PTI news agency, quoting sources, reported that Naidu's Telugu Desam Party may contest in 17 Lok Sabha seats and 145 Assembly seats. Kalyan's Jana Sena party will contest in two Lok Sabha seats and the BJP in six.
The three parties sealed their alliance following a second round of talks involving their senior leaders on Saturday, sources said.
The deal was clinched at the second round of talks involving TDP supremo Naidu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J P Nadda and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan.
The Lok Sabha and Assembly polls will be held simultaneously in Andhra Pradesh.&nbsp;
