In a major setback to an already depleted Australia, their premier pacer Josh Hazlewood was on Friday ruled out of the T20 World Cup after "running out of time" to recover from a hamstring injury.&nbsp;
Australia would not be naming any replacement for the 35-year-old bowler.
It was earlier stated by Cricket Australia that Hazlewood would be able to join the squad during the middle and later stages of the tournament, beginning Saturday and to be played at venues across India and Sri Lanka.
"We were hopeful Josh would be back to match fitness by the Super 8 stage but the latest indications he is still some time away and accelerating his program will carry too much risk," selector Tony Dodemaide said.
"We will not be naming a replacement player immediately. We feel we are well covered for the initial games so will make any later decisions based on priority need at the time," he added.
Nathan Ellis and Tim David are on track to be available for the group stage while Adam Zampa will be available for the first match in Colombo next week.
Australia's practice match against the Netherlands was abandoned last night but the team still has a six-day preparation window before the first pool game against Ireland on February 11.
Australia will play their four preliminary games in Colombo and Pallekele.
Hazlewood was ruled out of the 2025-26 Ashes series due to a lingering Achilles injury that occurred during his rehabilitation from a previous hamstring strain.
Earlier, seasoned pacer Pat Cummins was ruled out of the entire tournament due to a persistent back injury and was replaced in the 15-man squad by Ben Dwarshuis.
Mitchell Starc's T20I retirement has already robbed the squad of an all-weather bowler.

"Feeling good, so got through Adelaide unscathed so pretty happy," he told Channel 7 during the lunch break on the first day of the Boxing Day Test here.
"As of a few weeks ago, was still coming back from a back injury so playing back-to-back Test matches was pretty high risk.
"Cool our heels for a little bit with T20 World Cup next month," Cummins added.
His optimism came after coach Andrew McDonald said earlier this week that Cummins was not a certainty for Australia's T20 World Cup campaign.
Australia's first match is on February 11 against Ireland in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Although Cummins captains the Test and ODI teams, all-rounder Mitch Marsh leads Australia in the shortest format.
Cummins also said veteran spinner Nathan Lyon is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines following surgery on his hamstring. Lyon suffered the injury on the final day of the Adelaide Test and immediately went under the knife.
Australia's next Test assignment after the Ashes isn't due until August, giving him plenty of time to recover.
"He had surgery a couple of days ago, so he'll have a lengthy layoff, I don't know exactly, but will be at least a few months," Cummins said.
"Bit of a long road ahead for him, but he's done it before so hopefully he'll be back.
"It was a big one, so surgery, and he has his crutches in the change room at the moment so we wish best ... it was a shame but he put a brave face after the Test."

In Adelaide, he claimed his 564th wicket to move clear of fellow Australian great Glenn McGrath and into sixth on the all-time Test bowling list.
Murphy is set to play his first home Test, with his seven previous Tests all overseas. He last played for Australia in Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Richardson was included after a four-year Test absence, during which he underwent three shoulder surgeries.

The under-fire England squad, which needs a win in Adelaide to have any chance of reclaiming the Ashes, is taking a few days out this week to rest and relax at one of Australia's iconic beach towns.
The fourth test starts Boxing Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sydney will host the fifth test from Jan. 4.
England hasn't won an Ashes test in Australia since the 2010-11 series.

Cummins is struggling with an ankle injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Hazlewood is dealing with a hip issue, following previous side and calf strains. Both pacers will need extended rehabilitation before they can return to action.
The news of Cummins and Hazlewood's exclusion came on the same day Stoinis announced his ODI retirement. The injury had forced Hazlewood to sit out of the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide last week. Cummins exuded confidence that Hazlewood would pull through the match without any "hiccups".
"He had a really good bowl yesterday, he had another bowl in Adelaide a couple of days previously. Him and the medical team are really confident," he said on the eve of the game at the Gabba.
Cummins said he had to take the ball away from Hazlewood at Perth to prevent his injury getting worse.
"We've seen it a few times where Josh has pushed through to get through a Test match and a little bit of soreness turns into a month or two of injury.
"So, we made the call then that it probably wasn't worth the risk of keeping him bowling. I think he bowled an extra two overs leading into tea break and he said it felt ok, but I just kind of thought from there, 'that's enough'," said Cummins.
The Australian captain was sympathetic for Boland after the veteran pacer made a stirring return to Test cricket at Adelaide after last year's Ashes.
Boland had a match-haul of five wickets that included the prized scalp of star India batter Virat Kohli in the second innings.
"It's tough. He was fantastic in Adelaide. Unfortunately, he's spent quite a bit of time on the bench over the last 18 months and whenever he plays he's fantastic.
"It's a shame for Scotty, but still a fair bit to play out this series. I'd be surprised if he didn't play again in this series," said the New South Wales player.

Green is fading at Gabba
The green tinge on the Brisbane deck was significantly reduced on the match eve.
Once a fortress of the Aussies, India had breached the 'Gabba' barrier during the 2020-21 series to end the hosts' winning run dating back to 1988.
After that the West Indies too beat Australia here, riding on the back of pacer Shamar Joseph's heroics.
"I looked at it yesterday &ndash; it looked like a good wicket, like it has been the last few years," said Cummins.
"A bit of sun baking it the last couple of days (means) I don't think it's as green and leafy as it was against South Africa," he said.
Cummins was referring to the Test against South Africa here in 2022 which ended inside two days.
The 31-year-old also did not read too much into that recent vulnerability of his side in Brisbane.
"It's just a venue really. We play at dozens and dozens of venues each year. It's always good coming back to a place that's familiar &hellip; but the scoreboard starts at 0-0, so the venue isn't the be-all and end-all," he added.

"We will try to put this day behind quickly, good thing we will have a crack at Qualifier 2," Cummins said after the game.

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins urged his team to forget the heavy defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders and concentrate on the second IPL Qualifier, saying there are days in T20 cricket when things just don't work out.
SRH were handed an 8-wicket hammering by KKR in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday.
The Cummins-led side will get another crack at making the final. SRH will take the winner of the Eliminator between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai on Friday.
"We will try to put this day behind quickly, good thing we will have a crack at it (qualifier 2).
"You have these days in T20 cricket when it doesn't work out. We had a few starts but didn't go on with the bat. Not good with the ball. We weren't where we wanted with the bat and obviously couldn't do much with the ball."
"We all have played enough cricket, and going to a new venue (Chennai) helps us as well, so we got to keep this behind and move on." Pacer Mitchel Starc was adjudged player of the match for his sensational bowling up front when he claimed the scalps of Travis Head, Nitish Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed in the powerplay.
"We know how important the powerplay is. These were the two sides who have dominated in the powerplay with the bat. We needed to pick early wickets and get into their middle-order.
"The way Head and Abhishek have been playing thoughout the tournament, they like width and free their arms. We just tried to swing the ball and not provide them width. Bowl stump to stump and tried the hard length. The spinners were effective and the whole bowling department was great.
On Head's scalp, he said: "Got lucky I guess, was nice to see his back early, not always the case." Winning skipper Shreyas Iyer was elated by the result and said the unplanned 10-day break the team got due to two washed-out matches helped the players rejuvenate.
"The rejuvenation was important for us. When you travel so much. It's important to stay in the present. Today was the day we had to maximise, we did it and that's what we thrive on.
"The way every bowler stood up to this occasion, the way they came in and took wickets, that was imperative. The attitude and approach of all bowlers was to take wickets and they did."

He blazed away to a 28-ball 66 in SRH's four-wicket win over Punjab Kings here. The young left-hander hit six sixes and five fours as SRH shot down Punjab Kings' target of 215 with five balls to spare.
"He (Abhishek) is amazing. I wouldn't want to bowl to him. It's scary as he plays with freedom, not only against pacers but also against spinners," the Australian fast bowler said at the post-match presentation.
The 23-year-old, who represents Punjab at domestic level, has been in phenomenal form this season, aggregating 467 runs from 13 matches at a strike rate of nearly 210 while hitting 39 sixes and 35 fours.
Cummins also hailed Nitish Reddy who made a crucial 25-ball 37 while batting at No 4.
"Nitish is a class player, matured beyond his age, seems to sum up the game really well, he is perfect for our top-order," he said.
"It has been great and amazing. I didn't know many guys coming into this season, but we have played great cricket and had some fun. Great bunch of guys," Cummins added.
The win kept SRH on course for a top-two finish that will give them an extra opportunity to make the final.
"We have won five out of seven matches here, it has been great and amazing. It's really satisfying and exciting. I haven't played in finals before, we are playing some really good cricket, excited for what's ahead," Cummins said.

Australia captain Pat Cummins is yet to come to terms with the death of his mother and described flying to India for a Test series as she received treatment at home as the "hardest time of my life".
Cummins' mother, Maria, died of cancer last year.
"I knew when I was getting on that plane that I was going to have to come back in a couple of weeks pretty much," Cummins said in an interview for the Imperfects podcast.
Cummins was in India for a Test series but he returned home to be by his ailing mother's side as she received palliative care.
"Flying away... That's the hardest time of my life, easily. I probably felt it in the 12 months leading in. Any time I flew away I was like, 'Time's finite here, I'm making a deliberate choice to go and play somewhere rather than spend it at home'." Cummins said he tried to keep Maria's final days as private as possible and didn't explain to her why he flew home after playing in two Tests in India last year.
"But that time in particular &ndash; because we knew roughly the timeline, and knowing Mum and Dad as well; how much joy they get, sitting together, watching me play &ndash; that gave me enough confidence to go and play, and they were desperate for me to go and play, and I knew I could hop on a flight at any time and come back.
"But for those couple of weeks I was in India, especially now I look back on it, my mind was not in India, it was back home the whole time," he said.
Cummins said at one point he even thought of quitting as Australia captain and only wanted to be with his mother.
"I remember my manager and a couple of other people around me who I normally listen to were calling me and being like, 'I think we need to give a little bit of a reason why you've gone home', and I'm like, 'Nah, don't care', and he's like, 'Nah, you're getting a lot of heat here, you've got to explain yourself', and I was like, 'I honestly do not care what people think'," he said.
"After about six or seven days when I knew I wasn't going to come back to India, we said Mum's in palliative care. But I literally could not have cared less what people were saying about me."&nbsp;

Captain Pat Cummins' second 10-wicket total in test matches led Australia to a 79-run win over Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on the fourth day of the second cricket test on Friday.
Cummins made all the crucial breakthroughs late in the day as the hosts bowled Pakistan out for 237 to win the Boxing Day test and extend Pakistan's losing run in Australian tests to 16 matches.
Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha threatened to push Pakistan towards a win but Cummins ended the 67-run partnership between the pair in bizarre and dramatic fashion just 15 minutes before the scheduled close of play.
Australia reviewed a not out call to Rizwan as a Cummins delivery flew into Alex Carey's gloves. But after a long review from the third umpire, Richard Illingworth deemed the ball flicked Rizwan's wrist band that was connected to his gloves.
Rizwan was the furious with the decision, with Pakistan 219-5 at the time and starting to believe it could pull off the country's highest successful winning chase against Australia.
&ldquo;I got a little bit twitchy there,&rdquo; Cummins said. &ldquo;I felt OK but they were batting nicely. "As I said last week, 'All lives are equal', I don't think that's very offensive and I'd say the same about the dove." Backing his 37-year-old colleague who was born in Pakistan capital Islamabad, Cummins added, "That's Uzzy. I think he can really hold his head high with the way he's gone about it.
"But obviously there's rules in place and I believe the ICC have said they're not going to approve that. They make up the rules and you've got to accept it." Notably, the ICC reprimanded Khawaja for wearing a black armband during Australia's 360-run win over Pakistan in Perth, the action coming after he was barred from wearing boots with the messages "Freedom is a human right" and "All lives are equal" in the colours of the Palestinian flag during the match at the Optus Stadium.
Labuschagne displays the symbol of an eagle on the back of his bats which represents a verse from the bible and has long been allowed to have the sticker on his bat in international cricket.
Last week, Khawaja spoke about the impact that the Israel-Hamas conflict had on him.
"When I'm looking at my Instagram and seeing innocent kids, videos of them dying, passing away, that's what hit me the hardest," he said.
"I don't have any agendas other than trying to shine a light on what I feel really passionately, really strongly about."

Inspecting the pitch before a match is routine but clicking pictures of the track, for possible dressing room discussion and strategy building, is a bit unusual.
That's exactly what happened on Saturday morning when Australia skipper Pat Cummins came to have a look at the 22-yard-strip which will be used for the World Cup title clash between India and Australia on Sunday. Probably the pitch is playing on Australians' mind before the big match.
Cummins was guarded in his response when asked about his assessment of the pitch, which has already been used for the marquee India-Pakistan match.
"Just had a look," Cummins replied when asked about the track.
So what do you make of it? He was probed further.
"I'm not a great pitch reader, but it looked pretty firm. They've only just watered it, so yeah, give it another 24 hours and have a look, but it looks like a pretty good wicket." "I think Pakistan played someone there," he said without taking India's name.
While Australian team had an afternoon training session, Cummins was at the Narendra Modi Stadium just after half past 9.

A black soil track, rolled heavily to ensure slowness, is on offer. Batting will be difficult under the lights if opposition has two quality spinners operating in the middle overs.
"It's been a bit more high scoring here throughout the tournament. It's obviously the same for both teams. No doubt playing on your own wicket in your own country has some advantages, similar to wickets that you've been playing your whole life," he said.
Unlike Wankhede where New Zealand virtually lost the game after losing the toss, it won't be the case at Motera.
"I think, of all the venues, perhaps this venue - the toss isn't as important as, say, a Mumbai Wankhede Stadium or other venues. So, we&rsquo;ll be ready in terms of anything they'll throw at us. Yeah, we'll wait and see, but we'll make sure we have some plans." Dew will be big factor.
ICC's pitch consultant Andy Atkinson did pay a visit and was around for an hour as BCCI's curators monitored the last day touch up before it is handed over to match referee Andy Pycroft.
The GCA ground-staff were seen using anti-dew spray in the afternoon as the last 20-25 overs of the match are always affected by late evening dew.
"I think the biggest difference is the dew. This city and venue seems to have more dew than a lot of the other places we play. So perhaps, yeah, that's something to think about ahead of tomorrow." If Australia bat second, keeping dew factor in mind, Cummins indicated that batting order could be tweaked a bit.
"You've got to weigh up batting during the day when it might be a bit easier than under lights, but knowing that late in the second innings it could also slide on.
"Again, it (dew) might only be the last quarter of the game but once that settles in and the ball is skidding on, it's quite different to say the first 20 overs where it might be swinging. So, something to consider," he further stated.

On being asked about his mindset before the semifinal, which will be Cummins' first as captain in an ODI World Cup, he said, 'I think there's a couple of different ways you can go about it. You can either build it up as the most important game of your life, or you can do business as usual, really. And I think with experience, I think just keeping it pretty chilled and business as usual for our group seems to be the way to go. So, you draw back on those past wins but you also just draw back on the last few weeks and know that us at our best is good enough. So, you don't need to try and push it too hard. But I think there's a quiet confidence and I think our team plays our best when we've got that.'
Cummins, who is captaining a team for the first time at a knock-out game, added the current Australian players are not in a position to draw much from the famous 1999 World Cup semifinal between the two sides.
'None of our players were playing. So yeah, you can't probably draw too many conclusions from that team. But it's part of Australian cricket folklore and history. So, you see the replays. But yeah, obviously none of us were playing in the game.'
Cummins also stressed that the recent results against South Africa would have no bearing on the semifinal match at Eden Gardens, where the pitch is expected to assist spin bowlers and faces the threat of bad weather.
'I don't think it counts for too much. You know, obviously you start from scratch every time you play. They're a team we've played quite a lot and know quite well. But as you said, this week it's probably going to be quite different to say the South African series that we just played against them a couple of months ago. So, I think what helps us is we've got a lot of guys that have been in this situation before that have won one day World Cup, T20 World Cup, various other tournaments in big moments. So, I think that really helps. You can draw on that in the middle of the contest. In terms of the wicket, it does look like it's probably going to spin a bit more than some of the other wickets. Which again, is the same for both teams. It might just be a slightly different pace game, but I think it's still pretty evenly matched.'

Having guided Australia to the World Cup semifinals on the back of 7 straight wins after opening two losses, Cummins has made a strong case for captaincy extension.
Asked about his future as ODI captain, the 30-year-old said: "Potentially, yeah. We'll chat about it. We've been pretty open, me and Andrew (head coach) and George (selector) around different times in the year you're going to have different priorities.
"This is a bit of a one-off year where there's three or four big off-season events. After here the focus shifts back to Test cricket for a fair while. Probably like we've done in the past, at times white-ball cricket is going to have to shift (as a priority) so we fully focus on Test cricket. There's no end date in sight.
"I feel like I've been managed really well and looked after in a really, really busy year where you don't really want to give up any cricket," said the fast bowler.
Cummins, who had opted out of the IPL 2023 to focus on his international commitments, will put his name in the auction ahead of the 2024 edition.
The IPL will be played before the T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean, serving as ideal preparation for the global event.
Kolkata Knight Riders had bought Cummins for Rs 7.5 crore in the 2022 IPL auction.
"I feel like I haven&rsquo;t played a heap of T20 cricket and in some ways I feel like I haven&rsquo;t played my best T20 cricket for a little while," he said.
"I'm really excited, I'm probably going to go into the IPL auction for next year to try to get some games before that World Cup and push a case to not only make the side but get back to how I feel like I can bowl in T20 cricket," he said.
Mitchell Marsh is expected to lead Australia in the T20 World Cup.
