Wearing black clothes, Congress MPs, including former party chief Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest in the Parliament House complex on Friday and took out a march towards the Rashtrapati Bhawan as part of their nationwide stir against price rise, the GST hike on essential items and unemployment.
The protesting MPs of the opposition party raised slogans against the government demanding that the GST hike on essential items be withdrawn, with party chief Sonia Gandhi standing with the women MPs of the party holding a banner outside gate number 1 of Parliament.
The protesters were, however, stopped by the Delhi Police and not allowed to proceed towards the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Sonia Gandhi did not take part in the march. The other MPs were detained by police at Vijay Chowk.
Rahul Gandhi, senior party leaders K C Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Gaurav Gogoi were detained and taken away in a police bus from Vijay Chowk.
Speaking to the media at Vijay Chowk, Rahul Gandhi said, "We are here to raise the issue of price rise." He also said "democracy is being murdered".
Asked if the MPs were manhandled, he answered in the affirmative.
"Our job is to resist these forces, our job is to ensure that democracy in India is protected, our job is to raise the issues of people. We are doing that," the former Congress chief said.
He alleged that some of the party MPs were even "beaten up" by police.

In view of their nationwide protest against inflation and GST, police detained Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Shashi Tharoor and others. They were sent to Police Lines Kingsway Camp.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti told Parliament on Monday that it has been informed by the Archaeological Survey of India that there is no threat to the stability of Taj Mahal's foundation.
Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Jal Shakti Bishweswar Tudu said the only dam/barrage project proposal on river Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh pertains to construction of a rubber dam, 1.5 km downstream of the monument in Agra.
In response to a written question if the "government is aware that for want of a dam/barrage on river Yamuna, there is a threat to the stability of the foundation of the iconic Taj Mahal", the ministry said, "Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has informed that there is no threat to the stability of the foundation of Taj Mahal. It is further informed by ASI that regular monitoring is done by ASI in this regard and that the monument is in a good state of conservation." Further, the ministry said the Uttar Pradesh government has informed the Centre that clearance from six departments and ministries would be required to carry out the project.
"Out of these, clearance has been obtained from Inland Waterways Authority of India, Central Water Commission, Archeological Survey of India, and Taj Trapezium Zone Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority," Tudu said.
However, the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), Lucknow, has not granted clearance against the application submitted in December 2019.
The National Mission on Clean Ganga too has not cleared the proposal sought by the Uttar Pradesh government in March, 2019.

The Opposition, which equated the 'unparliamentary words' circular to a &ldquo;gag order&rdquo;, has criticised the new order as&nbsp;a means to quell dissent in a democracy.&nbsp;

A day after over 50 words and expressions were declared unparliamentary by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, a new circular by the secretariat of the Upper House dictates that demonstrations, dharnas, fasts or religious ceremonies can no longer be held in the Parliament House complex.&nbsp;
The Opposition, which equated Thursday&rsquo;s circular to a &ldquo;gag order&rdquo;, has criticised the new order as a means to quell dissent in a democracy.&nbsp;
The new bulletin, issued by the Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament scheduled to start July 18, seeks the &lsquo;kind cooperation&rsquo; of all members.&nbsp;
"Members cannot use the precincts of the Parliament House for any demonstration, dharna, strike, fast, or for the purpose of performing any religious ceremony," the bulletin said.&nbsp;
Congress general secretary and chief whip of the party in Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh took to Twitter to attack the government.&nbsp; "Vishguru's latest salvo &mdash; D(h)arna Mana Hai!," he said, sharing a copy of the circular issued on July 14.&nbsp;
Opposition leaders have in the past demonstrated inside the Parliament complex and Mahatma Gandhi's statue has also served as a popular spot for protests and fasts within the compound.&nbsp;

The 'Unparliamentary Words 2021' booklet released yesterday stated that the use of several terms such as 'jumlajeevi', 'baal buddhi', 'Covid spreader', 'Snoopgate' and even commonly used words such as 'ashamed', 'abused, 'betrayed', 'corrupt', 'drama', 'hypocrisy' and 'incompetent' will henceforth be considered unparliamentary in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.&nbsp;
However, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla clarified that no word has been banned from use in Parliament but will be expunged on a contextual basis. Members are free to express their views while maintaining decorum of the House, he had said. &nbsp; Once a word or expression is expunged it does not form part of the Parliament records.&nbsp;
The circular drew flak from the Opposition which insisted that every expression used by them to describe how the BJP was destroying India has now been declared unparliamentary.&nbsp;
