Following Jason Gillespie's departure as Pakistan's Test coach due to conflicts with PCB, Aaqib Javed assumes the interim role. As Pakistan gears up for the South Africa series, Javed is tasked with guiding the team through these pivotal changes.

It may be recalled that Gary Kirsten, who joined as the white ball side&rsquo;s coach along with Gillespie, had resigned before Pakistan left for the series in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Jason Gillespie stepped down from his role as Pakistan&rsquo;s Test team coach and former pacer Aaqib Javed has replaced the Australian for the upcoming two-match series against South Africa, PCB announced on Thursday.
Pakistan will play two Tests against the Proteas from December 26, and they are already in the Rainbow Nation for the white-ball leg of the tour.
Aaqib is currently the interim coach of Pakistan white ball outfits.
Gillespie, whose contract was set to expire in 2026, resigned after the Pakistan Cricket Board didn&rsquo;t review the contract of Tim Nielsen, who was brought in on the recommendation of the former Aussie quick, as the high performance coach of the team.
Gillespie was also peeved at the PCB&rsquo;s decision to absolve him of the powers of team selection and involvement in pitch preparation.
It may be recalled that Gary Kirsten, who joined as the white ball side&rsquo;s coach along with Gillespie, had resigned before Pakistan left for the series in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Kirsten had resigned citing differences with the PCB on the matters of authority.
Both Gillespie and Kirsten were appointed on a two-year contract before the T20 World Cup 2024 and the PCB had promised a new era for the Pakistan team.
But once Aaqib was brought in as senior selector and PCB granted him full powers including in team selection, the foreign coaches started falling out with the board.

"We made some mistakes that cost us the game but as a team I believe that there were a lot of positives, enough to win the game but unfortunately at the end we didn't win the game," Hafeez was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
In Australia's second innings, Abdullah Shafique had dropped Mitchell Marsh at slips when the home side was 46 for four. Marsh was 20 then.
Marsh went on to make 96 and added 153 runs for the fifth wicket with Steve Smith.
However, Hafeez defended Shafique.
"As a team, you always back your teammates if something is not going well for them. But we made this decision thinking if he's not feeling comfortable (at slips), Babar (Azam) is a better slip fielder, so why not make the change? "He (Babar) should take the lead and go to first slip. I think that also worked out very well for me as a director because I could see the right person was doing that job. Obviously, Abdullah is also a good fielder, but he wasn't feeling confident in the slips,&rdquo; said the former all-rounder.
However, Australia captain Pat Cummins, who was also the Player of the Match, did not endorse Hafeez's view on the better team in the match.

Visa and passport issues have left Pakistan's senior cricket team in Australia without a doctor and the under-19 side in the UAE without a team manager.
Sohail Saleem, who was named as the official team doctor for the series in Australia and New Zealand, is yet to join the team.
&ldquo;The Pakistan Cricket Board is still trying to get a visa for Dr Saleem and as soon as it comes he will join the side in Australia in time for the first Test in Perth,&rdquo; a reliable source in the PCB said.
He said similarly former Test batsman, Shoaib Muhammad, who was named manager of the Pakistan junior side taking part in the Asia Cup in UAE, has also been unable to leave with the squad.
"Shoaib had some expired passport issues which the board is sorting out and hopefully he will also soon reach UAE to take charge,&rdquo; the source said.
Ironically even the off-spinner, Sajid Khan, who is set to replace Abrar Ahmed in the Pakistan squad in Australia has also had his departure delayed due to visa issues.

Pakistan are hurt by their woeful World Cup show and their head coach Grant Bradburn on Monday blamed it on "foreign" Indian conditions and their lack of familiarity with the venues.
Four defeats on the trot have virtually dashed Pakistan's semifinal hopes. They have to win their remaining three matches by big margins and hope that other results also go in their favour to have any chance of making it to the last-four stage.
"We are in a position that we didn't want to be. We were determined at this stage of the tournament to be in control of our destiny but we're not. That hurts the group," said the Pakistani coach on the eve of their match against Bangladesh here on Tuesday.
"This tournament is on foreign conditions for us. None of our players have played here before. Every venue is a new one, including this one," he added.
Bradburn said his side have done their homework meticulously.
"We've done our homework meticulously on our opposition, on our venues that we're playing at, and we're prepared very, very well for each and every encounter.
"But the reality is that each and every venue is a new one for us and we don't feel disadvantaged at all in terms of the knowledge, the quality, the skill, the backing that we have for this team of cricketers," he said.
The former Scotland coach, who had served as Pakistan's fielding coach and then consultant, was handed the reins by the PCB on a two-year deal in May.
"Ideally, preparation for a tournament like this starts four years ahead. We started six months ago and changed direction in the way that we want to play the game of cricket, especially the one-day brand.
"We've shown some positive signs of that over the last six months. We're proud of some of the performances that we've put on. It's taking a little bit longer than we hoped, but we want to play a dynamic brand that matches the challenge of the conditions we're playing in." Skewed ICC Rankings ============== Pakistan were the No. 1 ODI side briefly in the lead-up to the World Cup and currently are No. 3 behind India and Australia.
But Bradburn believed that the ranking-system was skewed as Pakistan don't get to play India and many top-ranked countries don't play them at home of late.
He did not agree that Pakistan were the pre-tournament favourites.
"I'm not sure where you get favourites from because there are 10 teams in this tournament, there are 150 cricketers who are the best on the planet," Bradburn said.
"In terms of the ICC rankings, we know they are skewed because we don't get to play India, we don't get to play a lot of the top nations who haven't been to Pakistan of late," he said.
"But we're realistic. We have not been the best in the world as yet, so which highlights where we are in this tournament right now. We have no divine right to beat anyone in this tournament." Bradburn refused to blame the controversial DRS call for Pakistan's one-wicket loss to South Africa and said his side fell short by 20-30 runs despite assessing the sluggish Chennai conditions well.
"Chennai was a difficult venue to assess conditions, as you all well know. We felt we assessed the conditions well but in the South African game we acknowledge that we've had skills meeting this morning and part of our skills meeting is that we reflect on the good and bad.
"And part of the admission for us is that we didn't have our batsmen going quite deep enough in that innings, and we probably left 20 to 30 runs out in the middle. And certainly, 310 to 315, I think, in that game would have been sufficient to bring that game to a W for Pakistan," he said.
He said there was never any issue in terms of team environment.
"The environment is great. There's never any issue in terms of the environment. We have a wonderful group of players who are very determined, to bring joy to their nation, play a quality, exciting brand of cricket for our fans," he signed off.&nbsp;

A reliable source close to the players said the dispute centered around the demand of the players for a bigger share and say in the sale of their digital rights, handled by the board.

Pakistani players are reluctant to sign a long-term central contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after differences over sale of licensed digital rights of players between the two parties.
Though the last set of central contracts of the players expired on June 30, the PCB has so far not been able to convince them to sign the new contracts.
The Pakistan squad has already reached Sri Lanka for their One-Day series against Afghanistan and for the subsequent Asia Cup.
A reliable source close to the players said the dispute centered around the demand of the players for a bigger share and say in the sale of their digital rights, handled by the board.
&ldquo;The players&rsquo; point of view is that other cricket boards either are not involved in the sale of players digital rights / NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) or have a proper agreement with them on the sharing of revenues from this avenue,&rdquo; the source said.
He said with companies like Rario headed by two Singapore-based Indians or Dream Sports paying good money for the sale of sports NFTs of players, including image, clips and sound bites, the players wanted the board to give them either independent rights to negotiate or a bigger share from the earnings.
The PCB apparently gets revenues from the ICC and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for giving the digital/online rights of players images, clips and sound bites for the events held under the aegis of these bodies.
The PCB is said to be also earning from the sale of digital rights of the players from the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
&ldquo;The PCB does give the players a share from their digital rights sales but the players feel it is not enough,&rdquo; the source said.
The sale of sports NFTs have become a major earning source in the crypto currency market with Rario recently investing nearly $120 million.
NFTs are known as digital collectables and a global base of 250 crore cricket fans with a desire to own digital artifacts, the mementoes of their favourite players have become a big market to earn revenues.
The sale of NFTs is authenticated through blockchain technology.
The source said the PCB had proposed a three-year central contract for the players who were reluctant to accept this term.
&ldquo;Though the board had nearly doubled the monthly central contract retainers and increased the match fees, the players want a bigger share from the sale of their digital rights and even increased share from what the board earns from selling broadcasting rights,&rdquo; he said.
At present, a senior PCB official is in Sri Lanka holding negotiations with senior players and trying to convince them to sign their contracts which the board has designed.&nbsp;

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has clarified that its chairman Najam Sethi didn't make any recommendation relating to Pakistan playing their World Cup matches in Bangladesh instead of India.
"At no stage during Thursday&rsquo;s media interaction, did I give any reference to the ICC or made any remarks on the ICC Men&rsquo;s Cricket World Cup 2023, which is scheduled in October. This matter has not been mooted or discussed at any ICC forum so far,&rdquo; Sethi said in the press release.
According to PTI, ICC had already stated that no discussions relating to the Cricket World Cup 2023 were carried out with PCB as BCCI had assured that visa won't be a problem for the Men in Green.

After the initial standoff, it seems the BCCI &amp; the PCB will soon reach an agreement over the Asia Cup hosting issue.
According to an ESPNCricinfo report, the 2023 edition of the Asia Cup will most likely be played in Pakistan, barring the India games that are expected to be played at an overseas venue.
The report suggests UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka and even England are potential contenders to host a total of five matches, including at least two India-Pak contests in the Asia Cup.
The tournament will take place in the ODI format in September, ahead of the World Cup in India and will feature 13 matches in total.
