A playwright, poet and columnist, Orya Maqbool Janwas previously detained by intelligence agencies for slamming military's interference in politics and for supporting jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.

Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has suffered a blow as three independent members elected to Punjab's provincial assembly backed by it have joined a rival party in the politically important province.
On the other hand, Nawaz Sharif-led Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) managed to take eight more independent Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPA)-elect and one Member of the National Assembly (MNA)-elect, who are not backed by the PTI, on board, raising its tally in National Assembly to 80 seats and in Punjab Assembly to over 150.
In Punjab, former three-time prime minister Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz has been nominated by the PML-N for the slot of chief minister.
The three PTI-backed members Punjab Assembly joined hands with Aleem Khan's Istehkham-i-Pakistan Party (IPP).
After the resignation of IPP patron-in-chief Jahangir Khan Tareen, Aleem is looking after the affairs of the party that was carved out of Khan's PTI in the wake of the May 9 violence.
Aleem reportedly with the help of the powerful establishment is influencing PTI-backed independent winners in Punjab to swell its numbers.
Three PTI-backed MPAs-elect -- Sardar Awais Drashik, Zahid Ismaeel Bhatta and Hafiz Tahir Qaisrani and other independent Ghazanfar Abbas Cheena called on Aleem in Lahore and announced joining the IPP.
Aleem claimed that another group of 10 to 15 MPAs-elect backed by PTI would soon also join the IPP as it had been in contact with him.
A fourth PTI-backed independent winner Ejaz Swati in Sindh has joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
So far, a total of five lawmakers-elect have left Imran Khan's party and efforts are underway to change the loyalties of more to strengthen the position of PML-N both in the Center and Punjab.
Sources say that the PML-N and its ally IPP aim to gather enough independents of the PTI backed so that it does not need to depend much on the PPP in the future scheme of things.
PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has been nominated by his party for the slot of the prime minister. The PPP has announced supporting the PML-N in the formation of government but refused to join the Cabinet.
Khan's PTI independent winners are leading the 266-member lower house (National Assembly) with 92 seats followed by PML-N 80, the PPP 54 and Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) with 17 seats.

In the wake of the general elections in Pakistan, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is following the situation in the country &ldquo;very closely&rdquo; and has urged the authorities and political leaders to refrain from violence and avoid actions that could increase tensions.
Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, made these remarks at the daily press briefing here on Monday.
&ldquo;On the elections in Pakistan, I can tell you that he is indeed following the situation very closely and continuing to monitor the situation following the general elections,&rdquo; Dujarric said while responding to a question on the Secretary-General&rsquo;s reaction to the outcome of last week&rsquo;s election in Pakistan.
Guterres calls for resolving all issues and disputes through the established legal frameworks and for human rights and the rule of law to be fully respected in the interest of the people of Pakistan.
&ldquo;The Secretary-General urges the authorities, and political leaders to maintain a calm atmosphere and to reject and refrain from all forms of violence and avoid any actions that could increase or enflame tensions,&rdquo; Dujarric said.
Pakistan&rsquo;s general elections were held last week, but there was an unusual delay in the announcement of results which led to allegations of vote rigging at many constituencies across the country.
While both jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and ex-premier Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have claimed victory, a coalition government appears inevitable as no single party has got the majority in the National Assembly.
Voting was held on 854 national and provincial assembly constituencies. According to the initial results, 348 independents returned successfully.&nbsp;

Pakistan's recent election showed many constituencies having rejected votes higher than the win margin. This comes amid allegations of poll rigging.

The number of rejected ballots was greater than the margin of victory in at least 24 National Assembly constituencies, according to an interesting statistical nugget from Pakistan's recent general elections.
The difference potentially opens doors for legal battles as several losing candidates have flooded the courts with petitions to review the results.
According to a report in the Dawn newspaper, 22 constituencies with a greater number of rejected votes than the margin of victory fell in Punjab, with one each in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh province.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won the electoral race in 13 of these constituencies, five were claimed by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), four by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independents and two by other independents.
Going by their numerical strength, both the PML-N and the PPP are in a position to form a coalition government in the Centre. However, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif announced that all parties except PTI should join hands in the upcoming coalition set-up.

According to the results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) till Sunday, of the total 265 National Assembly seats, PTI-backed Independents bagged 93 seats, followed by PML-N at 73, PPP at 54, MQM at 17 and others at 19.
The highest number of rejected votes was in the NA-59 (Talagang-cum-Chakwal) area of Punjab where Sardar Ghulam Abbas of PML-N secured 141,680 votes against his closest rival PTI-backed Muhammad Ruman Ahmad, who got 129,716 votes.
The margin of victory was 11,964 while the number of ballot papers rejected was 24,547.
It was followed by NA-213 Umerkot (17,571 ballots). The lowest number of ballots excluded are reported from NA-236 Karachi East-II (51 ballots).
In total, around two million ballot papers have been excluded from the count from the 265 National Assembly constituencies.
As many as four constituencies have more than 15,000 excluded ballots each. Another 21 constituencies have excluded 10,000 to 15,000 ballots. A large number of constituencies (137) reported excluded votes in the range of 5,000 to 10,000.
A total of 67 constituencies have reported fewer than 5,000 but greater than 1,000 excluded ballots. Only six constituencies have reported fewer than 1,000 excluded ballots each.&nbsp;

An 18-member Cabinet of Pakistan's newly appointed caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar took oath on Thursday to run the cash-strapped country until the general elections and ensure a seamless transition of power.
President Arif Alvi administered an oath to the caretaker Cabinet, Radio Pakistan, the national public broadcaster for radio, reported.
Former foreign secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani has been appointed as Foreign Minister, Sarfaraz Bugti as Interior Minister, Shamshad Akhtar as Finance Minister, Lt. Gen. (retired) Anwar Ali Haider as Defence Minister and senior journalist Murtaza Solangi as Information Minister.
Khalil George took the oath as Minister for Minorities, industrialist Gohar Ijaz as Minister for Industries, academic Dr Umar Saif as Minister for Information Technology, Ahmad Irfan Aslam as Law Minister, renowned actor Jamal Shah as Minister for Culture Aniq Ahmad as Religious Affairs Minister.
Akhtar is the only woman in the Cabinet.

The premier and opposition parties began rounds of meetings to pick a caretaker prime minister following the dissolution of the National Assembly on August 9.

Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar was on Saturday appointed the caretaker prime minister of Pakistan to head a neutral political set-up to run the cash-strapped country until the next general elections.
Kakar's name was agreed upon during the final day of consultations between outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Leader of Opposition in the dissolved National Assembly, Raja Riaz Ahmad, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
"The prime minister and leader of the opposition jointly signed the advice (to appoint Kakar) and it was sent to the president," read the PMO statement.
Kakar, 52, is an ethnic Pushtun from Balochistan province and a part of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) -- a party considered close to the powerful establishment of the country.
In his first reaction, Kakar tweeted: &ldquo;Thank you to Allah Almighty who gives me the opportunity to Serve the Nation as Caretaker PM of Pakistan. I.A (inshallah) will do the best which will be in favour of Pakistan.&rdquo; Speaking to the media, Opposition leader Riaz said: "We decided that the interim prime minister would be from a smaller province".
He said that Kakar's name was suggested by him which was approved.

Demonstrators, belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), have entered the Red Zone while the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has set up a stage in front of the Supreme Court, Dawn News reported.
