President Zardari approved the summary submitted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally asking him to appoint Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Munir as the first CDF of Pakistan.&nbsp;
Last month, the parliament passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment providing to create the post of CDF with the objective to create unity of command and expedite the decision making in any critical situation.&nbsp;
The CDF replaced the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), the post for which was abolished.&nbsp;
The President extended his best wishes to Munir, a release from President&rsquo;s office said in Islamabad.&nbsp;
Zardari also approved a two-year extension in the service of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, Chief of Air Staff, to take effect from the completion of his present tenure on March 19, 2026.&nbsp;
According to a statement by the PM Office, the prime minister had earlier approved the summary for the appointment of Field Marshal Munir as the army chief and the CDF, and then referred it to the President House.&nbsp;
Field Marshal Munir was appointed as COAS in November 2022 initially for three years but his tenure was extended for five years in 2024.
The decision to issue a formal notification has put to rest rumours regarding delay in the appointment of the CDF, which was due since November 27, when the last CJCSC General Sahir Shamshad Mirza retired.&nbsp;
Earlier, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, addressing a press conference, had said that there was no legal or political obstacle regarding the notification of the appointment of the Chief of Defence Forces and this notification would be issued soon.&nbsp;

The Pakistan government is trying to sell loss-making Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as envisaged under a USD 7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.
Fed up with the piling up losses, the government last year made a determined bid to sell it, but it could not get an attractive offer and cancelled the plan.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with all corporate entities and company representatives participating in the privatisation process of the national airline, according to a press release posted on X by state broadcaster PTV News.
&ldquo;PIA&rsquo;s bidding will take place on December 23, which will be broadcast live on all media,&rdquo; it quoted the prime minister as saying. He said the process was proceeding smoothly to restore the national carrier&rsquo;s &ldquo;lost prestige&rdquo; and align it with modern requirements.
&ldquo;We are ensuring transparency and merit in the privatisation process of PIA,&rdquo; he was quoted as saying.Sharif said the restoration of PIA&rsquo;s flights worldwide would provide convenience to overseas Pakistanis, stressing that aligning it with modern requirements was &ldquo;extremely essential&rdquo; for the tourism sector&rsquo;s development. It would be the country&rsquo;s first major privatisation in nearly two decades.

Former Pakistani prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan on Tuesday said he fears for his life as he remains lodged in Adiala Jail, where he is serving a 14-year sentence in the Al‑Qadir Trust graft case along with other corruption-related convictions that keep him in custody.
&ldquo;The military establishment has done all they could against me. All that is left for them is to now murder me," Khan said, according to a PTI statement released after his sister Uzma Khan met him inside the high‑security prison. He alleged that he is being held in conditions similar to those reserved for an inmate on death row.&nbsp;
&ldquo;If anything happens to me, the Army Chief and DG ISI will be responsible," he said. &ldquo;I have the same facilities that an inmate on death row has."
The PTI claimed Khan has been kept in solitary confinement with no electricity or sunlight, questionable food, no clean drinking water, no medical assistance and none of the basic facilities normally available to inmates. The party called the conditions inhumane.&nbsp;
Khan said, &ldquo;I was tortured by being confined in a cage and treated worse than animals. Electricity to my cell was shut off for five days. I was confined to the cell for ten days." Accusing the army chief of political persecution, he added, &ldquo;Asim Munir is the most tyrannical dictator in history and is mentally unstable."
Uzma Khan was permitted to meet her brother for the first time in more than a month, amid an unannounced ban on prison visits and rising speculation about Khan&rsquo;s health. The meeting, held inside Adiala Jail&mdash;located near the Pakistan Army&rsquo;s GHQ&mdash;lasted between 25 and 35 minutes. People close to her said Imran Khan appeared &ldquo;fine, fit, and in high spirits." They added that he remained mentally strong and conveyed a message for party leadership, along with remarks directed at what he termed an &ldquo;undemocratic regime." However, Uzma said Khan was angry over issues related to jail administration.
Speaking to the media after her visit, Uzma said, &ldquo;Praise be to Allah! His health is perfectly fine. However, he was very angry and said that they are subjecting him to mental torture." She claimed Khan told her he was being &ldquo;mentally tortured&rdquo; because he is kept inside his cell for most of the day and allowed out only briefly. &ldquo;He was not allowed to communicate with anybody," she said.
Adiala Jail authorities, however, maintained that Khan is in &ldquo;good health.&rdquo; He has been imprisoned since August 2023 in multiple cases.
The ban on family meetings had triggered public outrage, with the PTI saying Uzma was allowed to meet him only after large numbers of supporters gathered outside Adiala Jail. Meanwhile, the Punjab government deployed the entire Rawalpindi police force along Adiala Road to prevent PTI protests. Section 144, which bans gatherings of four or more people, has already been imposed in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
According to officials, &ldquo;an eight‑kilometre stretch has been completely sealed. Schools and colleges are closed. Residents are being required to show their ID card to pass through the area." A group of lawyers also staged a demonstration outside the Islamabad High Court against the government for keeping Khan in isolation.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said compliance with Section 144 would be enforced &ldquo;at any cost.&rdquo; &ldquo;Whether they come to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) or the Adiala jail, action under Section 144 would be carried out without any discrimination,&rdquo; he said.
Earlier, Imran Khan&rsquo;s son Kasim Khan demanded proof of his father&rsquo;s wellbeing. &ldquo;We demand proof of (Imran Khan)'s life,&rdquo; he said in a post on X.
Khan&rsquo;s party has warned of nationwide protests if his sisters are not allowed to meet him. They have also warned that if anything happens to the PTI founder, &ldquo;those involved and their families will not be spared by Pakistanis both here and abroad.&rdquo;

Afghanistan&rsquo;s Taliban government alleged Pakistan carried out airstrikes in Khost, Kunar, and Paktika provinces, killing ten civilians including nine children, escalating tensions after recent cross-border clashes and attacks in Peshawar.

Afghanistan's Taliban government on Tuesday accused Pakistan of launching overnight airstrikes in three eastern provinces, killing 10 civilians, including nine children, in a sign of worsening tensions between the two neighbours.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Afghan government, said on X that Pakistan &ldquo;bombed&rdquo; the home of a civilian in Khost province, killing nine children and a woman. He said additional strikes were carried out in the provinces of Kunar and Paktika, injuring four others.
Pakistan's military and government did not immediately comment on the allegation, which comes more than a month after cross-border clashes erupted when the Afghan government claimed Pakistani drone strikes hit Kabul.
The latest escalation follows a deadly attack a day earlier in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar, where two suicide bombers and a gunman stormed the headquarters of the Federal Constabulary. Three officers were killed, and 11 others were wounded in the Monday morning attack.
No group has claimed responsibility for the Peshawar attack, but suspicion quickly fell on the Pakistani Taliban, or Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.
It is a separate group but closely allied with the Afghan Taliban, and many of its leaders are hiding in Afghanistan.
Pakistan has repeatedly urged Afghanistan's Taliban rulers to prevent TTP militants from using Afghan territory to launch attacks. Kabul denies the accusation, but relations further deteriorated after Afghanistan blamed Pakistan for the October 9 drone strikes on its capital and threatened retaliation.
The clashes that followed killed dozens of soldiers, civilians and militants before Qatar brokered a ceasefire on October 19.
Two subsequent rounds of talks in Istanbul failed to resolve the dispute, when Pakistan said Afghanistan had refused to provide a written guarantee that TTP fighters would not operate from Afghan soil.
The Afghan government, in recent years, has said that it does not allow anyone to its soil for attacks against any country, including Pakistan.

Key Lessons from Operation Sindoor
General Dwivedi outlined three main lessons learned from the operation:
Integration Between Forces &ndash; &ldquo;Another thing is integration, which means that all forces, whether Army, Navy, Air Force, CAPF, anyone else need to have good integration, because today's battles are multi-domain. Just the army cannot fight a battle, everyone has to fight together...So many things have been mixed together.&rdquo;
Ensuring Proper Supplies &ndash; Highlighting the importance of logistics, he noted, &ldquo;We also cannot say how long a battle will last even today. This time we fought for 88 hours, next time it could be four months too or even four years. Looking at that, do we have enough supplies and weapons to fight that? If we do not have then we need to prepare for that.&rdquo;
Timely Decision - Making Across the Command Chain &ndash; &ldquo;Whenever some operation happened we learn from it, this time too we learned things. One of the things we learned was that the decision we have very less time to take any decision, and take a decision at every level on time.&rdquo;
India&rsquo;s Stance on State-Sponsored Terrorism
Dwivedi underlined India&rsquo;s firm position against countries supporting terrorism, saying: &ldquo;When a country encourages state-sponsored terrorism, it becomes a matter of concern for India. India talks about progress. If someone creates obstacles in our course, then we will have to take some action against them. When we talk about the new normal, we have said that talks and terror can't go together. All we are asking is to adopt a peaceful process, which we will cooperate with. Until then, we will treat terrorists and their sponsors alike.&rdquo;

The Pakistan Cricket Board has rescheduled the opening of a T20I tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe from November 17 to November 18, besides making Rawalpindi the sole venue for the tournament owing to the visiting teams' security concerns in the wake of a suicide attack in Islamabad.&nbsp;
The second game of the seven-match rubber has also been postponed by a day to November 20.
Earlier, Lahore was scheduled to host five games of the event, including the final on November 29, but the three boards have agreed to hold the proceedings exclusively in Rawalpindi now. "The decision to revise the schedule was made in consultation with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), following mutual discussions to accommodate operational and match requirements," the PCB said in a statement after a night of hectic negotiations to ensure that the Lankan players do not leave an ongoing ODI series midway.
The Zimbabwe cricket team reached Islamabad early Thursday morning amid tight security for what is being described as an "important preparatory platform ahead of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup," by the PCB. The Sri Lankan cricket team will also continue with its bilateral tour of Pakistan, and no player or official is planning to return home, according to its team manager, Mahinda Halangoda.
Eight players had expressed concerns about continuing the tour after the terror attack in Islamabad, which left 12 dead and several injured. But after SLC spoke to them and gave them assurances, they have decided to stay for the assignment. Halangoda said that no player would be returning to Sri Lanka. "I can confirm that," he asserted.
A reliable source aware of the developments said it had taken massive behind-the-scenes efforts to convince the players that they would be safe in Pakistan and should continue playing the series. "The Sri Lanka board President Shammi Silva and the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Pakistan got involved and things are settled for now," he said.
PCB Chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said he was grateful to the Sri Lankan team for the decision to continue the Pakistan tour.
The PCB later announced a slight change in the schedule of the remaining two one-day games. The PCB announced that the two matches will now be played on Friday and Sunday in Rawalpindi, instead of the originally planned dates of November 13 and 15.

Pakistan has indirectly blamed Afghanistan's Taliban government again for allowing its land to be used by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to carry out terror attacks in Pakistan. Tensions have been high between the two countries after peace talks failed in Doha following military action by Pakistan on areas inside Afghanistan, where the military says the TTP has camps.
On Tuesday, a suicide bomber detonated himself outside a judicial complex in Islamabad, killing 12 people and injuring scores, while in Northern Pakistan's Wana area a terror attack on the Wana Cadet College was foiled by security forces and around 300 students were safely evacuated.
Federal Minister for Information Ata Tarar said if security forces had not acted swiftly, Pakistan could have witnessed a bigger incident like the Peshawar school attack in 2018.
Three years back, the New Zealand team cancelled a white-ball series in Rawalpindi and returned home without playing a match after receiving credible intelligence about a possible terror attack targeting the visitors. "That is why Mohsin Naqvi personally went to the stadium and met with the visiting team members and assured them they would be safe and secure," the source said.
Back in March 2009, TTP terrorists had attacked the Sri Lankan team bus close to the Gaddafi Stadium, resulting in the closure of international cricket in Pakistan for nearly 10 years as foreign teams refused to visit the country due to security concerns.
"Security has been beefed up with Pakistan Army and the paramilitary rangers now deputed to monitor security for the visiting players and officials," the source said.
Sri Lanka, after playing three ODIs in Rawalpindi, will then take part in a T20 triangular series also involving Zimbabwe from November 17 to 29.

It added that 20 injured individuals have been shifted to the emergency department of the PIMS Hospital.
PTV further reported that it was a suicide bombing. &ldquo;The suicide bomber's head was found lying on the road,&rdquo; it reported.
No group or individual claimed responsibility for the blast, but the attack came days after the third round of talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban failed to reach any agreement to tackle the issue of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.

Both sides reported human losses during the clashes from October 11-15, which were brought under control after a temporary ceasefire that was extended and is still holding. However, it came under strain on Thursday after a fire exchange for which the two sides blamed each other, but the situation was brought under control.
&ldquo;We strongly reject claims circulated by the Afghan side regarding today&rsquo;s incident at the Pak-Afghan border at Chaman,&rdquo; Pakistan&rsquo;s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said in a statement.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Firing was initiated from the Afghan side, to which our security forces responded immediately in a measured and responsible manner. The situation was brought under control due to responsible action by Pakistani forces and the ceasefire remains intact,&rdquo; it said. The ministry also said that &ldquo;Pakistan remains committed to ongoing dialogue and expects reciprocity from Afghan authorities.&rdquo;
Meanwhile, Pakistan and Afghan Taliban officials resumed talks on Thursday, aiming to tackle the issue of cross-border terrorism and avoid further escalation between the two sides.&nbsp;
The third round was planned to last for two days and was arranged after the two sides failed to agree on the contentious issues during the two rounds of talks held on October 19 in Doha and October 25 in Istanbul.
For the third round, Pakistan&rsquo;s delegation is being led by Lt Gen Asim Malik, Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence and national security advisor, and includes senior officials from the military, intelligence agencies, and the Foreign Office. The Afghan Taliban&rsquo;s delegation, meanwhile, includes General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) chief Abdul Haq Waseq, Deputy Interior Minister Rehmatullah Najib, Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen, Anas Haqqani, Qahar Balkhi, Zakir Jalali, and Afghanistan&rsquo;s charg&eacute; d&rsquo;affaires in Ankara.
So far no details have been shared by any side about the talks, but sources said that talks were held in a "good atmosphere" and could be extended if needed. Pakistan authorities on Wednesday confirmed that talks with the Afghan Taliban to tackle cross-border terrorism failed, saying Kabul backtracked on commitments to control militancy.
The four-day talks began on Saturday and were facilitated by the host, Turkiye, where officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan attempted to find a common ground but failed to reach a consensus.
Pakistan&rsquo;s Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, confirmed the peace talks ended without a breakthrough. &ldquo;The dialogue thus failed to bring about any workable solution,&rdquo; Tarar said in a post on social media. He said Pakistan had long sought cooperation from Kabul against militants targeting the country.
Tarar said, ever since the assumption of control in Kabul, Pakistan has repeatedly engaged with the Afghan Taliban Regime regarding persistent cross-border terrorism. Tarar added that Islamabad had asked the Taliban regime &ldquo;time and again to fulfil their written commitments to Pakistan and to the international community in the Doha Agreement.&rdquo;
However, he said, &ldquo;Pakistan&rsquo;s fervent efforts proved futile due to the Afghan Taliban Regime&rsquo;s unabated support to anti-Pakistan terrorists.&rdquo; &ldquo;The Taliban regime bears no responsibility towards the people of Afghanistan and thrives on a war economy,&rdquo; he said, adding that it &ldquo;desires to drag and mire the Afghan people into a needless war.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Pakistan has always desired, advocated and immensely sacrificed for peace and prosperity for the people of Afghanistan,&rdquo; Tarar said. He said Pakistan has held countless rounds of talks and parleys with the Afghan Taliban Regime, but unfortunately, they have always remained indifferent to Pakistan&rsquo;s losses. "Sadly, after sustaining such huge losses of men and material for four long years, Pakistan&rsquo;s patience has run its course,&rdquo; he added.
He said Pakistan joined the talks in Doha and later Istanbul &ldquo;to give peace a chance,&rdquo; acting on the request of &ldquo;brotherly countries of Qatar and Turkiye.&rdquo;
Tarar said Pakistan presented &ldquo;sufficient and irrefutable evidence&rdquo; of terrorist activity, which &ldquo;was acknowledged by Afghan Taliban and the hosts,&rdquo; but &ldquo;regrettably, the Afghan side gave no assurances.&rdquo; &ldquo;The Afghan side kept deviating from the core issue, evading the key point upon which the dialogue process was initiated. Separately, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told Geo News on Tuesday night that an agreement was about to be reached with Afghanistan, but Afghan negotiators backpedalled due to intervention from Kabul during the negotiations, elaborating that Taliban negotiators went back on an agreement &ldquo;four or five times&rdquo; after receiving instructions from Kabul.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Whenever we got close to an agreement &mdash; either in the last four days or last week &mdash; when negotiators reported to Kabul, then there was intervention and the agreement was withdrawn,&rdquo; he outlined. Asif also blamed India for the failure of the talks, calling Kabul &ldquo;a tool for Delhi.&rdquo;
After the failure of talks, security sources in Pakistan said that the security of its people is of paramount importance to Pakistan. &ldquo;We will continue to take all possible measures necessary to protect our people from the menace of terrorism and assure them that the Government of Pakistan will continue to employ all the resources which are required in this regard to decimate the terrorists, their sanctuaries, their abetters and supporters,&rdquo; they said.

The Washington-based International Monetary Fund (IMF) will provide Pakistan with USD 1 billion under its Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and USD 200 million under its Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) after approval from the fund&rsquo;s board.
Last week, an IMF mission led by Iva Petrova concluded talks with Pakistani authorities on the second review of the EFF agreed in 2024 and the first review for the RSF climate loan agreed this year, but it left Pakistan without signing a staff-level agreement.
In a statement issued early on Wednesday, Petrova stated that the staff-level agreement remained subject to approval by the IMF Executive Board.
&ldquo;Supported by the EFF, Pakistan&rsquo;s economic programme is entrenching macroeconomic stability and rebuilding market confidence,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;The recovery remains on track, with the FY25 current account recording a surplus &mdash; the first in 14 years, the fiscal primary balance surpassing the programme target, inflation remaining contained, external buffers strengthening, and financial conditions improving as sovereign spreads have narrowed significantly,&rdquo; she said.
However, she added, the recent floods had weighed on the country&rsquo;s outlook, particularly of the agriculture sector, bringing down the projected FY26 gross domestic product (GDP) to about 3.25-3.5 per cent.
The IMF official also noted progress on Pakistan&rsquo;s policy priorities, saying: &ldquo;The authorities reaffirmed their commitment to the EFF and RSF-supported programmes, and to maintaining sound and prudent macroeconomic policies while advancing ongoing structural reforms.&rdquo; She said that authorities remained committed to meeting the FY26 budget primary surplus of 1.6 per cent of GDP, anchored in sustained efforts to mobilise revenue through tax policy and compliance measures, and &ldquo;stand ready to take necessary actions should revenue shortfalls risk programme targets&rdquo;.
&ldquo;At the same time, the authorities are assessing the flood damage and are providing urgent flood relief support in the affected provinces via reallocations in the provincial and federal budgets,&rdquo; Petrova said.
She also said that efforts were underway to enhance revenue mobilisation, broaden burden-sharing between federal and provincial governments, and strengthen public financial management.
The IMF official noted that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) was committed to a prudent monetary policy stance to ensure inflation remains durably within its target range of five to seven per cent.
On the issue of circular debt to the power sector, she said that Pakistan remained committed to preventing its accumulation through timely tariff adjustments that ensure cost recovery and maintaining a progressive tariff structure.

At least 10 people were killed and over 30 others injured on Tuesday in a bomb attack against the paramilitary forces in Pakistan&rsquo;s troubled Balochistan province.
The blast ripped through a busy street close to the headquarters of Frontier Constabulary (FC) in Quetta, capital of the province.
Balochistan Health Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar confirmed the attack. &ldquo;Ten people have been killed while 32 were injured in the blast,&rdquo; he told the media.
The injured were rushed to the city&rsquo;s various hospitals, where an emergency was declared. &nbsp;&ldquo;An emergency has been declared at the Quetta Civil Hospital, Balochistan Medical College (BMC) Hospital Quetta, and the Trauma Centre,&rdquo; according to a statement by Health Secretary Mujeebur Rehman.
Television footage and social media clips showed the powerful explosion ripping through the street, which also caught several civilians present in the vicinity.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the blast, Baloch insurgent groups frequently carry out attacks targeting security personnel in the province.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti strongly condemned the incident, calling it a &ldquo;terrorist attack.&rdquo; &ldquo;The terrorists cannot weaken the nation&rsquo;s resolve through cowardly acts. The sacrifices of the people and security forces will not go in vain. We remain committed to making Balochistan peaceful and secure," he said in a statement on X.
Balochistan, bordering Iran and Afghanistan, is home to a long-running violent insurgency.

Ten civilians and 14 militants were killed when bomb-making materials stored at a compound owned by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant group exploded on Monday in Tirah Valley&rsquo;s Matur Dara area in Khyber district of the province, bordering Afghanistan.
Imran Khan&rsquo;s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party's provincial branch and residents claimed that the "jet bombing" in the Tirah Valley caused the explosion. However, the local administration denied the claims about aerial strikes on the compound, saying the explosives used in bomb making exploded.&nbsp;
