A transgender woman, who has an 'obsession with harm and death', has been issued a life sentence of minimum 24 years in Oxford city of England for killing a man in 2021. The 26-year-old Scarlet Blake murdered 30-year-old Jorge Martin Carreno as a sexual fantasy, Oxford crown court said.&nbsp;
Blake led Carreno to a secluded riverbank and hit him on the back of the head with a vodka bottle. She then strangled him and pushed him into the river. He drowned and died.&nbsp;
Sentencing Blake on February 26, Justice Chamberlain said, &ldquo;Your decision to kill Jorge was not a reaction to something he had said or done. It was not a momentary mistake. It was not a decision made in anger, or because your emotions overcame you. It was the culmination of a plan you had been considering and formulating for months.&rdquo;
The judge also added, "There was no evidence of sexual activity at the crime scene, but there was ample evidence derived sexual gratification from strangulation&rdquo;.
&ldquo;There was therefore a clear sexual motivation for the killing. You also believe that you would derive pleasure, whether sexual or not, from the experience of killing a person. I am sure that you did derive pleasure from killing Jorge as you had from killing the cat,&rdquo; he added.&nbsp;
Prosecutors said Blake killed the man because she had a fantasy with violence and she wanted to know how it feels to kill someone.
During the hearing, Blake claimed of having a fragmented personality due to which she sometimes becomes a cat. She even made cat sounds in front of the jury to prove her claim.&nbsp;
The murder happened four months after Blake livestreamed the gruesome killing of a cat. On the livestream, she killed the cat and chopped it into pieces and then put the pieces into a blender. She was also heard saying, &ldquo;Well, one day, I want to learn how to do this to a person.&rdquo;

Oxford Dictionaries said Monday that &ldquo;goblin mode&rdquo; has been selected by online vote as its word of the year.
It defines the term as &ldquo;a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.&rdquo; First seen on Twitter in 2009, &ldquo;goblin mode&rdquo; gained popularity in 2022 as people around the world emerged uncertainly from pandemic lockdowns.
&ldquo;Given the year we've just experienced, goblin mode' resonates with all of us who are feeling a little overwhelmed at this point,&rdquo; said Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl.

The word of the year is intended to reflect &ldquo;the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the past twelve months.&rdquo; For the first time this year's winning phrase was chosen by public vote, from among three finalists selected by Oxford Languages lexicographers: goblin mode, metaverse and the hashtag IStandWith.
Despite being relatively unknown offline, goblin mode was the overwhelming favourite, winning 93% of the more than 340,000 votes cast.
The choice is more evidence of a world unsettled after years of pandemic turmoil, and by the huge changes in behaviour and politics brought by social media.
Last week Merriam-Webster announced that its word of the year is &ldquo;gaslighting&rdquo; &mdash; psychological manipulation intended to make a person question the validity of their own thoughts.
In 2021 the Oxford word of the year was &ldquo;vax&rdquo; and Merriam-Webster's was &ldquo;vaccine&rdquo;.

The voting, which started on November 21, will close on December 2.
Last year 'Vax' was adjudged word of the year.
"2022 has been a year defined by opening back up. However, although we have finally been able to physically reunite and come together again, our world somehow feels more divided than ever," Oxford Languages said.
"In recognition of this shift, we wanted to open up the final step of our Word of the Year selection process to the true arbiters of language: people around the world... For the first time in its history, the 2022 Word of the Year will be chosen by the public," a statement said.
The three words are each relevant to the year in a different way.
In 'metaverse', there is a conceptual future brought into the vernacular in 2022. From hybrid working in virtual reality, to debates over the ethics and feasibility of an entirely online future, usage of this word quadrupled in October 2022 compared to the same period last year.
'#IStandWith' recognises the activism and division that has characterised this year. From the war in Ukraine, to the Depp v. Heard lawsuit, this 'word' coined on social media to align one's views to a cause or person can often further foster dispute (and sometimes even hate speech) in its polarising nature.
'Goblin mode' is another relatively new concept: the idea of rejecting societal expectations put upon people, in favour of doing whatever one wants to. Early usage dates back to 2009/10, but as the world emerges from lockdown, the phrase has been coined in rejection of returning 'back to normal' after a fake 'quote' from actress and model Julia Fox brought the term back into the mainstream.&nbsp;

Lauding the approval for Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine for use in the UK as a "big step forward", AIIMS Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria on Wednesday said that India will have the Covid-19 vaccine within days. "This is very good news that AstraZeneca got approval for its vaccine by UK regulatory authorities. They have robust data and in India and the same vaccine is being developed by the Serum Institute of India. This is a big step forward not only for India but many parts of the world," Dr Guleria told ANI in an interview. In a boost to global coronavirus vaccination hopes, a study has found that the Covid-19 vaccine spearheaded by Oxford University builds strong immunity to the virus. As the front-runner in the global race for a vaccine entered final Phase III clinical trials, researchers at Bristol University carried out tests to check whether it was behaving as intended. The Bristol team found that the vaccine was successfully able to instruct human cells to copy the genetic instructions to create the spike protein. The study confirmed that large amounts of the coronavirus spike protein are produced with great accuracy, and this goes a long way to explaining the success of the vaccine in inducing a strong immune response. Sarah Gilbert, who leads the Oxford University vaccine trial, praised the study for helping to explain the vaccine&rsquo;s effectiveness.

India's drug regulator has directed Serum Institute of India to suspend recruitment of new volunteers for phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The directive came in the backdrop of pharma giant AstraZeneca pausing the trials in other countries. The DCGI on Friday also directed Serum Institute to increase the safety monitoring of the subjects already vaccinated as part of the trial, and submit the plan and report. The drugmaker&nbsp;had on Thursday hit a pause after AstraZeneca put the trials on hold following an unexplained illness in a volunteer in the UK.

New Delhi, PTI: Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has directed Serum Institute of India to suspend till further orders new recruitment in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine candidate in the backdrop of pharma giant AstraZeneca pausing the trials in other countries.
In an order, a copy of which has been accessed by PTI, DCGI Dr V G Somani on Friday also directed Serum Institute of India (SII) to increase the safety monitoring of the subjects already vaccinated as part of the trial, and submit the plan and report.
Somani also asked the firm to submit clearance from Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) in the UK as well as in India to obtain clearance from his office (DCGI) prior to resumption of future recruitment in the trial. The central drug regulator DCGI had issued a show-cause notice to SII on September 9 for not informing it about AstraZeneca pausing clinical trials of the vaccine candidate in other countries and also for not submitting casualty analysis of the "reported serious adverse events".
Following which the Pune-based firm, which has partnered with the British-Swedish biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca for manufacturing the Oxford vaccine candidate, on Thursday said it is pausing the clinical trials in India.
Earlier this week, AstraZeneca said it had paused the trials because of 'an unexplained illness' in a participant in the study. "We are reviewing the situation and pausing India trials till AstraZeneca restarts the trials," SII said in a statement on Thursday. According to the DCGI's order issued on Friday, the SII in its reply stated that DSMB has noted no safety concerns from the Indian study (part 1-phase-2 study) with the first dose and seven days post vaccination safety data. In its reply, SII also stated that DSMB further recommended "to pause further enrolment into the study until ongoing investigations of SAE reported in the UK study is completed and the sponsor and the UK DSMB are satisfied that it doesn't pose any safety concerns".
"In the view of the above, I Dr V G Somani, Drugs Controller General of India, Central Licensing Authority, after careful examination of your reply and the recommendations of the DSMB in India, in exercise of the powers vested under Rule 30 of the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019, direct to you suspend any new recruitment in the phase 2 and 3 clinical trial till further orders," the order read.
"Increase the safety monitoring of the subjects already vaccinated with the vaccine under trial and submit the plan and report," the order further stated.
