In a recent Oxfam report, it's revealed that the fortunes of the world's five wealthiest individuals&mdash;Elon Musk, Bernard Arnault, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, and Mark Zuckerberg&mdash;have reportedly doubled to 869 billion dollars since 2020. However, within the same period world's poorest 60%, which account for 5 billion people, became poorer. Released as global elites convene at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the charity's report highlights that the combined wealth of these five billionaires surged from 405 billion dollars in 2020 to 869 billion dollars in the past year.
The report goes on to caution that this growing wealth gap might pave the way for the world's first trillionaire within the next decade, underscoring the pressing need to address economic inequality globally.
The Oxfam report predicts a widening wealth gap, foreseeing the world's first trillionaire emerging within a decade. Additionally, the report grimly warns that global poverty will persist for another 229 years if current economic trends persist.
<h3>Here are key highlights from the Oxfam report, titled "Inequality Inc.":</h3>
Seven out of 10 of the world&rsquo;s largest corporations have a billionaire as CEO or principal shareholder, despite stagnation in living standards for millions of workers worldwide.
Oxfam reveals that the world&rsquo;s billionaires collectively became $3.3 trillion (&pound;2.6 trillion) richer than in 2020, growing their wealth three times faster than the rate of inflation.
The combined wealth of the top five richest individuals&mdash;Elon Musk, Bernard Arnault, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, and Mark Zuckerberg&mdash;increased by $464 billion, marking a staggering 114% rise.
The total wealth of the poorest 60% of the global population, comprising 4.77 billion people, has declined by 0.2% in real terms.
Across 52 countries, the average real wages of nearly 800 million workers have fallen, resulting in a collective loss of $1.5 trillion over the past two years&mdash;equivalent to 25 days of lost wages for each worker.
The most recent Gini index, measuring inequality, indicates that global income inequality is now comparable to that of South Africa, the country with the highest inequality globally.
The 148 largest corporations worldwide saw a 52% jump in total net profits to $1.8 trillion in the year ending June 2023, compared with average net profits in 2018-21.
The world&rsquo;s richest 1% own 59% of all global financial assets, including stocks, shares, bonds, and stakes in privately held businesses.
Despite numerous economic crises, including the Covid pandemic, billionaires are $3.3 billion richer than they were in 2020.
Oxfam points out that states have relinquished power to monopolies, enabling corporations to influence wages, food prices, and individuals' access to medicines.

Oxfam protests ahead of G7 meet

Oxfam campaigners on Wednesday organised a protest in London to highlight famine in Africa ahead of the G7 leaders&rsquo; summit in Japan.
G7 leaders' &lsquo;big heads&rsquo; appeared at Trafalgar square in central London to shed light on the food crisis in East Africa, where Oxfam says one person is likely to die of hunger every 28 seconds between now and July.
Oxfam estimates that one person is dying every second due to hunger across South Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.
Magnus Corfixen, Oxfam&rsquo;s humanitarian lead said leaders lacked the political willingness to address the crisis in East Africa.
"If they wanted to, they could. And we've seen this before. So that's why we are calling on them to actually do something about it," he said.
Corfixed added that G7 countries were chiefly responsible for carbon emissions, a driver of climate change.
The G7 summit will be held in Hiroshima, Japan from May. 19 to 21.

The FIR also claims that Oxfam India was planning to pressure Indian government for renewal of FCRA licence through foreign governments.

The CBI registered an FIR against Oxfam India and its office-bearers for alleged violation of the foreign funding laws and carried out searches at its office in Delhi. 

The FIR also claims that Oxfam India was planning to pressure the Indian government for renewal of FCRA licence through foreign governments.&nbsp;

The CBI registered an FIR against Oxfam India and its office-bearers for alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act and carried out searches at its office in Delhi, officials said on Wednesday.
The FIR against the Indian arm of the global NGO Oxfam was registered based on a complaint from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The complaint, which is now part of the FIR, has alleged that though Oxfam India's FCRA registration ceased, it planned to circumvent the law by taking other routes to channelise funds.
"Email communication found during IT (income tax) survey by the CBDT shows that Oxfam India has been planning to pressure Indian government for renewal of FCRA through foreign governments and foreign institutions," it alleged.
"The Oxfam India has the reach and influence to request multilateral foreign organisations to intervene on its behalf with the Government of India," it alleged.
The complaint alleged that this exposed Oxfam India as "a probable instrument of the foreign policy of foreign organisations or entities" which have funded it liberally over the years.
It alleged that Oxfam India routed funds of its foreign affiliates such as Oxfam Australia and Oxfam Great Britain to certain NGOs and exercised control over the project.
&nbsp;"From the email found during IT survey by the CBDT it appears that Oxfam India is providing funds to the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) through its associates/ employees in the form of commission. The same is also reflected from the TDS data of Oxfam India which shows payment of Rs 12.71 lakh to CPR in the F.Y. 2019-20...," the complaint has alleged.
&nbsp;It said the organisation got FCRA registration to carry out social activities but payment made to the Delhi-based think tank CPR through its associates or employees in the form of commission -- professional or technical services -- is not in the line with its stated objectives.
"This is violation of section 8 &amp; 12(4) of the FCRA 2010," it alleged. &nbsp;The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out searches at the office of Oxfam India in Delhi Wednesday, officials said.
In a statement earlier this month, Oxfam India said it is fully compliant with Indian laws.
"Oxfam India is fully compliant with Indian laws and has filed all its statutory compliances, including Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) returns, in a timely manner since its inception. Oxfam India has been cooperating with all government agencies since its FCRA registration wasn't renewed in December 2021," the NGO said.
The group has filed a plea in the Delhi High Court against the decision to not renew its FCRA registration, it said.

The Union Home Ministry on Thursday recommended a CBI probe into the affairs of Oxfam India for alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, sources said.
The home ministry found that Oxfam India continued to transfer foreign contributions to various entities even after registering under the FCRA, which prohibits such transfers.
During a survey carried out by the Income Tax department, multiple emails were found which revealed that Oxfam India was allegedly planning to circumvent provisions of the FCRA by routing funds to other FCRA-registered associations or through the for-profit consultancy route, sources said.
The survey also "exposed" Oxfam India as a probable instrument of foreign policy of foreign organisations or entities, which have funded the organisation liberally over the years, they said.
Oxfam India, which is registered to carry out social activities, allegedly routed funds to the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) through its associates and employees in the form of commission, sources said.
Following these findings, the home ministry recommended a CBI probe into the affairs of Oxfam India, they said.

According to a report, the richest one per cent in India now own more than 40 per cent of the country's total wealth, while the bottom half of the population together share just 3 per cent of wealth.
Releasing the India supplement of its annual inequality report on the first day of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, rights group Oxfam International said "Taxing the top 100 Indian billionaires at 2.5 per cent, or taxing the top 10 Indian billionaires at 5 per cent would nearly cover the entire amount required to bring the children back into school,".&nbsp;
"A one-off tax on unrealized gains from 2017&ndash;2021 on just one billionaire, Gautam Adani, could have raised Rs 1.79 lakh crore, enough to employ more than five million Indian primary school teachers for a year," it added.
Oxfam India urged the Union finance minister to introduce one-off solidarity wealth taxes and windfall taxes to end crisis profiteering. It also demanded a permanent increase in taxes on the richest 1 per cent and especially raise taxes on capital gains, which are subject to lower tax rates than other forms of income.

Two days after the Income-Tax (I-T) department officials conducted ‘surveys’ on Oxfam India and the Independent Public-Spirited Media Foundation (IPSMF) premises on suspicion of financial irregularities, both organisations alleged that the IT sleuths cloned their server and private mobile phones of the senior leaders to retrieve data. 

In December 2021, the renewal of the FCRA licence of Oxfam India was denied by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Income-Tax Department on September 7 conducted 'surveys' on two think tanks -Oxfam India, Centre for Policy Research (CPR) and a charity organisation - IPSMF on suspicion of irregularities related to financial transactions.
&ldquo;The Income Tax (IT) department officials conducted an Income Tax 'survey' at the Oxfam India Delhi office from the 7th September 2022 noon to early hours of 9th September. During these 35-plus hours of non-stop survey, the Oxfam India team members were not allowed to leave the premises; the internet was shut down and all the mobile phones were confiscated,&rdquo; Oxfam India said in a statement.
&ldquo;The Income Tax survey team took away hundreds of pages of data pertaining to finances and programs of Oxfam India. They also took all the data by cloning the Oxfam India server and the private mobile phones of the Senior leadership team and the Finance lead,&rdquo; it added.
It said that while the team conducting the survey was polite and professional, the process of a survey with such sweeping powers and broad ambit resulted in disappointing Oxfam India.
It asserted that the organisation is compliant with Indian laws and has filed all its statutory compliances, including Income tax and Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) returns, in a timely manner since its inception.

Stating that past eight months have been distressing for Oxfam India, the company pointed out that in December 2021, the renewal of FCRA licence was denied by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
&ldquo;Despite this, Oxfam India was conducting one of the largest civil society responses to the Covid crisis across 16 states in India. Oxfam India has provided lifesaving medical and diagnostic equipment to 150 District Hospitals, 172 Primary Health Centres, and 166 Community Health Centres in 16 states. 10 oxygen plants have also been set up and made operational across the country,&rdquo; it said.
&ldquo;The IT survey and MHA&rsquo;s refusal to renew Oxfam India&rsquo;s FCRA registration will not reduce our commitment to serve the vulnerable communities in country and uphold values enshrined in the Indian Constitution,&rdquo; it added.
Meanwhile, TN Ninan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the IPSMF, said in a statement, "A team of income tax officials came for a 'survey' to the Bengaluru office of the Foundation on Wednesday, September 7. They stayed till 4.30 this morning, going through the papers and records of the Foundation and asking questions. The Foundation&rsquo;s staff were cooperative and answered all questions put to them on a wide range of matters. The officials took statements from three senior staff members."
&ldquo;All laptops and mobile phones were taken for cloning data in them and returned last night (September 8)," he said.
"The Foundation believes that its affairs are entirely in order. Some media reporting on the I-T survey has linked it to foreign funding and the funding of political parties. We wish to make it clear that the Foundation has received no foreign funds at any stage, and has funded only media entities. The Foundation believes in its mission of supporting independent and public-spirited media, and intends to continue its work," the statement added.
The Centre for Policy Research (CPR), also subjected to the 'survey', had already put out a statement on Friday which read, "We hold ourselves to the highest standards of compliance and are confident that we have done nothing wrong."
"We are committed to working with the authorities to address any questions they might have," CPR President and Chief Executive Yamini Aiyar had said.

In its annual inequality survey released on the first day of the World Economic Forum's online Davos Agenda summit, Oxfam India further said that an additional one per cent tax on the richest 10 per cent can provide the country with nearly 17.7 lakh extra oxygen cylinders, while a similar wealth tax on the 98 richest billionaire families would finance Ayushman Bharat, the world's largest health insurance scheme, for more than seven years.
The COVID-19 pandemic saw a huge rush for oxygen cylinders and insurance claims during the second wave last year.
On wealth inequality, Oxfam report further said that 142 Indian billionaires collectively own wealth of USD 719 billion (over Rs 53 lakh crore), while the richest 98 of them now have the same wealth as the poorest 55.5 crore people in the bottom 40 per cent (USD 657 billion or nearly Rs 49 lakh crore).
If each of the 10 richest Indian billionaires were to spend USD one million daily, it would take them 84 years to exhaust their current wealth, while an annual wealth tax applied to multi-millionaires and billionaires would raise USD 78.3 billion a year that would be enough to increase government health budget by 271 per cent or eliminate households' out-of-pocket health budget and leave some USD 30.5 billion.
Noting that COVID-19 may have begun as a health crisis but has become an economic one now, Oxfam said the wealthiest 10 per cent have amassed 45 per cent of the national wealth while the share of the bottom 50 per cent of the population is a mere 6 per cent.
It further said that the inadequate governmental expenditure on health, education and social security has gone hand-in-hand with a rise in the privatisation of health and education, thus making a full and secure COVID-19 recovery out of reach for the common citizen.
The study urged the government to revisit its primary sources of revenue generation, adopting more progressive methods of taxation and assessing its structural issues that permit such wealth accumulation by the rich.
Additionally, the government should also redirect revenue towards health, education and social security, treating them as universal rights and as a means of reducing inequality, thereby avoiding the privatisation model for these sectors, Oxfam said.
"We call upon the government to redistribute India’s wealth from the super-rich to generate resources for the majority by reintroducing the wealth tax and to generate revenue to invest in the education and health of future generations by imposing a temporary one per cent surcharge on the rich for health and education," it said.
On gender inequality, Oxfam India said women accounted for 28 per cent of all job losses and lost two-thirds of their income during the pandemic.
It further said India's 2021 budget allocation for the Ministry of Women and Child Development is less than half of the total accumulated wealth of the bottom ten of India's billionaire list and just a 2 per cent tax on individuals with an income of over 10 crore could increase the ministry's budget by an astounding 121 per cent.
If the wealth of the first 100 billionaires is accumulated, they could fund the National Rural Livelihood Mission scheme, responsible for creating Self Help Groups for women, for the next 365 years.
On health inequality, the report said a 4 per cent wealth tax on the 98 richest families in India would finance the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for more than 2 years and noted that their combined wealth is 41 per cent more than the Union Budget of India.
On education inequality, the study said a 1 per cent of tax on wealth of the 98 billionaires in India can fund the total annual expenditure of the department of school education and literacy under the Ministry of Education, while 4 per cent of tax on their wealth can take care of Mid-Day-Meal programme of the country for 17 years or Samagra Sikshya Abhiyan for 6 years.
Similarly, a 4 per cent tax on the wealth of the 98 billionaires would be enough to fund the Mission POSHAN 2.0, which includes Anganwadi Services, POSHAN Abhiyan, Scheme for Adolescent Girls, and National Creche Scheme, for 10 years.

A new Oxfam report has found that 80% of parents whose children are studying in government schools report that&nbsp;education was &ldquo;not delivered&rdquo; during the lockdown.&nbsp;
The survey of five Indian states says that in Bihar&nbsp;the consensus on education failure was a complete 100%.&nbsp;
The parents attributed the failure to lack of digital devices and access to digital&nbsp;mediums of learning as per the survey that interviewed&nbsp;1,158 parents and 488 teachers across Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
59% of parents&nbsp;with children in private schools, too, reported non-delivery of online education as per the analysis.&nbsp;
